Depends on the type, but I'd say it's mostly story.

I'd say that the most important one is the story. Then, the graphics because I don't want to play a game that have a good story but crappy graphics.

Gameplay > Story > Graphics

All can complement each other to keep the standard balanced. Like, a game can have a bad gameplay but an amazing story and mind-blowing visuals to cover up the deficit.

By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!''

Gameplay and graphics (I prefer stylish 2D games over realistic ka-boom pew pew games though).

They're called "games" for a reason.

There are some games where gameplay is the core and if it's bad, the game goes to the trash (FPS games, Hack n' Slash games, etc). And in other games, the atmosphere and characters are the most important, while gameplay is just there so you can progress with the story (The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, Heavy Rain, most horror games, VNs, Telltale games, etc.)

Personally, the least thing that matters to me are graphics. I actually really love 2000-2006 games, like Deus Ex 1-2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Thief 1-2.

It's also important for the game to be glitch and bug free. Some bugs/glitches destroyed games before. The initial release of Fatal Frame 4 had a glitch where you simply couldn't progress.

So the most important things are Gameplay and Story (I count the characters to the story)

Gameplay, definitely. I enjoy a good story too, but if the gameplay is good, I couldn't care less about it.

If it's a game, it is made by gameplay.

A game with a totally ridiculous story/plot but with excellent gameplay will be more entertaining than a piece of new shit interactive movie with a good story/plot and poorly designed dumbed down filler in between cutscenes being sold as a game.

I don't think there can be only one important thing...at least for me.... a game has to have a good storyline, game-play and characters for it to be playable. I have quit playing games before that had a good storyline but the characters were complete and utter crap.

Depends, but usually gameplay. Many games don't even have stories and don't need them.

Depends on the game. I couldn't care less about the story in Rogue Legacy and the characters are constantly dying, but a huge part of Dragon Age has always been the story + characters for me. Other games rely on atmosphere and graphics.

Gameplay, it's the obvious answer.

Without this, the other points become irrelevant.

I wouldn't understand someone who would play a game that isn't fun to play!

Gameplay (if the gameplay sucks then no buy)
Characters (If I don't like the characters, it's usually no buy)
Replay value/duration: I don't like short games (a game must last at least 20 hours or have a high replay value such as the Macross, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Gundam games from this and last gen)
Backgrounds and Level design
Graphics (as long as the graphics fit the art style it's fine, I don't care about resolution)
Story (I'll buy games with an atrocious story if everything else is decent)

All I really want are interesting characters. I think I would slog through a terrible game for a good story too.

If anyone thinks that characters aren't important, they're more out of touch with reality than Sega.
Now you're wondering if there's white text in any of my other posts.

I'd say gameplay. Its a hard question though, because some of my fondest memories are playing through The Last of Us, where I didn't particularly enjoy the gameplay, but I loved the story. It depends on the game obviously, but I'd say great gameplay saves a game from a bad story, more often than the other way around.

Depends on the genre. For RPGs or other text-heavy genres, story/characters is most important.
For games that have less of a narrative, gameplay is most important.

I don't despise them. I love those games buit I'm starting to regret their existence. Developers these days don't have a brain and follow anything poul;ar without making any real changes. just copying amnd pasting and now we're just getting bloody Interactive Movies (This should be a genre)

I get what you're saying but if a RPGs or other text-heavy genres, have complete utter shit gameplay but everything else is fine then would that still e okay to you?

Story+Character+Music. I don't care that much about gameplay and I'm not a graphics whore. However gameplay makes games fun. I loved Twisted Metal(2012) so much because it had very addictive arcade style gameplay.
