I've decided to watch this because I saw Mikaela's art somewhere and found him kinda cute, but in the end I liked this episode pretty much, that I even cried at those kids' death. Normally I don't cry so easily, but this scene with this beautiful soundtrack in the background was just way too touching.
pacing was bullshit... way too fast....
at a glance. animation quality was decent, but background images looked like paintings placed on a wall rather than actual backgrounds.
Music is good.
Voice acting is a bit meh.
BEcause of the pacing i felt nothing for the fact that the "family" died, and the whole "yu-chan go" had no emotion to it because of this..
Y you condense 15 chapters into 1 23 min episode ???/??????????/
Eh, a decent first episode. The start really grabbed my attention, but after that it was a bit stale. I understand the importance of build up, but I can't say I was that invested into where it was going. The way it progressed felt so whimsical and on the fly. It just felt like it was just throwing down "we're a happy family" as a means to an end and I never really felt any warm tingling feelings from them being together. Although that scene showing how the two met goes to show that Mikaela was trying to let Yuu have a brand new start in the orphanage, so in that sense I could feel it.
That end though, absolutely brutal. When the first girl just dropped to the floor, it made my skin crawl. Pretty much established a mutual hatred for the vampires, Yuu grabbing the gun and blasting Ferid's brains out was a total win.
Solid first episode, the scene where the noble killed all the kids was a good one. Good use of music. MC seemed kind of annoying while everyone else had acclimated which was annoying but I guess he has to be like that for him to want revenge. No OP or ED though? Huh
The pacing was faster than I'd like since it reduced the impact of pretty much everything it was attempting to setup, although the quantity of little kids that were slaughtered at the end compensated for the lack of individual emotional weight and was quite ruthless. The second half of the episode was very predictable and I'm still not quite invested yet, but damn Sawano's music made many of the scenes more captivating than they would have been. I expected the OP to play at the end at least, but it appears not.
I like the premise and hopefully Yuu's quest for vengeance doesn't prove disappointing. He was a kid this episode so the hotheadedness and angst were understandable. Mika appears to have some political/manipulative and strategic potential there, even though the plan ultimately failed.
Overall, I thought it was a sufficient first episode.
I'm currently on episode 5 after starting the series just last night. It's pretty solid so far and I'm curious to see what will happen. I'm glad that there are only 12 episodes, because I don't think I would've finished if it had over 18 episodes if that makes sense. It faintly reminds me of Attack on Titan, except not nearly as great. The first episode was a bit too fast paced for me and the killing of all the children was very shocking imo. I was not expecting that. Sure, I knew at least one or maybe 2 would die but all of them was gut-wrenching. It was disturbing.

HAHAHAHA
I don't want some Gintama fanboy telling ME I "lack taste". How hilarious. That's one of the most tasteless anime I've ever seen...and it was boring as f*ck too.
LMAO Can you imagine having your 13th birthday on that day? That would be fucked up.
WTF? They killed off Akane. You don't kill potential waifu's. Who is Yuu going to end up with now?
If you see that my post is exactly 1 month old (or more) from when it was posted... Don't waste your time, especially when you want to reply with something petty & insignificant. Assume that I've moved on (because I have).
What is this? Everything except the people and their clothes, everything looks like they're painted using watercolor...sketchily. Not a big fan of this kind of artsyle.
lol black haired kid waited for blondie to arrive and as he goes up the stairs to meet him, a super cheesy romantic ost starts to play.. what the actual fuck it gave the shivers lol wonder if they played swordfight before they ate dinner.
This first episode may not be a total disaster, it definitely isn't one that sells this premise well. The writing is, to put it lightly, very questionable.
I'll elaborate. These children, Yuu-chan's family are featured for the sole reason of being killed off for shock value. But the scene can't even capitalize on the dramatic aspect of this: only Mika gets to say his dying last words. All we see of the other children is that they die, but none of them face the camera, and none of them speak. Yuu-chan also never calls out any of their names, besides Mika. The result is a deeply messed up scene, but ineffectual as drama, at best. Even though I assume it was supposed to be sad.
I'm never a fan of a character being killed in the same episode they're introduced, if their death is played for drama. However, it can be pulled off. The first episode of Attack On Titan (which is a show that is quite similar in its concept) is a good example of this, because it's done in moderation. I can't even recall how many members Yuu-chan's family counted, or what their names were, besides Akane, which definitely isn't a good sign.
Now, the irony was supposed to be that Yuu-chan didn't treat them as family before all this, and so this could be his great regret. But did he really not care about them enough to know their names? I find that hard to believe. In fiction, the death of an unnamed character will not matter, from a emotional standpoint at least.
And of course, I didn't have enough time to get invested in Yuu-chan, as he isn't an instantly relatable and likeable character, so that's another reason the drama falls flat.
The structure of the episode is also something that annoyed me, with the linear story and two time skips. One way I think it could have worked better - by only slightly rearranging the same material:
Open with Yuu-chan running through the tunnels from the scene of the massacre. Short and quick flashbacks to Bathory taunting the children (but don't show the deaths - the blood on Yuu-chan's shirt is plenty of foreshadowing). Then show a few shots showing the creepy scenery, and start from the scene where Mika eats the liquefied food.
Proceed as normal, and show all the scenes that occured before that through flashbacks, during relevant moments according to the dialogue. Admittedly, this might make the dialogue disjointed, but at least the creepy scenes would be more effective. When Yuu-chan's family is killed, flash back to the scene where he doesn't consider them his family, and linger a little over the carnage for a more shocking effect. It's cheesy, but at least it would be more appropriate for the events.
In other words, I think the presentation (including the flat direction that I haven't mentioned yet) and the editing fail to capitalize on the drama and the shock factor. A show with such an over-the-top edgy premise should own up to it and not mess around, subtlety in the editing and direction has little relevance when the script and the premise are anything but that. Unapologetic melodrama would have worked much better.
But fortunately, there are some things to distract the viewer from the clumsy writing and editing. The backgrounds are very pretty, with a gothic atmosphere thanks to the heavy use of black and green and the aesthetic that reminds me of something made with chalk pastel or a classic oil painting from an altarpiece. The rest of the art is just okay - Mika is cute, Yuu is kind of bland, the direction is nothing to write home about. There is something about the character designs that make them look strange on top of the backgrounds, my guess is too many hard edges (literal edges) look odd on backgrounds like these.
The music is catchy and larger than life, courtesy of Hiroyuki Sawano, who's known for composing for hype series. To sum it up, this is like watching a trainwreck - a beautiful, fancy choo-choo train approaching a cliff at an extremely high speed, with no chance of averting the disaster - but at least it's entertaining.

I would love to know what or who made this supposed virus and why apparently some other people werent affected ... honestly anything regarding the way this virus works would be nice to know ^^
Surely it's not just anyone who turned 13 the day before the virus dropped wouldve been dead or maybe it did, must've been a very intelligent virus - Also we see people clearly over the age of 13 picking up our MC, how did they survive?
Also where did the vampires come from, did they emerge from the virus, were they already roaming before the virus ....
Gaaaahh I need to know so much :D
I kinda got an AoT vibe from the first episode though, mostly because of the music and the scenes they were used in.
The deaths didn't affect me at all, not just because it's the first episode but also because we barely got any information / screentime regarding this "supposed" familiy
That shounen tag is deceiving, lol. That was a pretty brutal first episode, with a bunch of kids getting slaughtered. I wonder where it'll go from here.
Straight into the most amazing opening, introduction to characters, and a shocker twist ending ever. Could analyse and praise everything, but taking it all into account, one of the greatest episodes of anything ever.
The first episode began with human masacre by the vampire.. and yu, mika and the other children can be save and kidnaped by vampire,,
this remembering me with the Yakusoko no neverland anime,, when the orpanage tring to escape from their place into the unkown world,,
the time when they escape mika and other children was killed,, and left yo to survive and manage to escape, but i think in this episode is not enought hatred and anger that make the series become good,, imean like Eren anger and full of hatred when her mother got killed by titan,, but its still good episode
Not a good start. I think that felt forced even that I haven't read the manga yet.
- Animation: the quality was bad, but it could be worst. Character designs are OK, but the background is awful.
- OST: It's alright, I guess.
- Characters: at the moment, I don't like anyone, the worst character in the series is Yuu. God, I found very annoying, even more than Eren from AoT and Meliodas from Nanatsu no Taizai togheter.
At the moment I will give this anime a rating of 3 out of 10. I hope that the rest of the episodes are better.
It was alright, but when he stepped outside into the world and the other people were just waiting for him and said things about a prophecy it felt like bad writing or a rush job. And then they do another time skip and show him wearing a uniform walking around a broken empty city... was that part supposed to get my interest? At least the preview showed a better idea of what is to come.
I know this is the first episode but it was kinda boring. That whole episode was also cringy and rushed too. (I'm not hating though!) I just hope it becomes more exciting.
Nooo why Akane. Mika too but I have a feeling he'll survive, but at a cost so Im looking forward to how those 2 will meet.
Nice first episode but I'm not a big fan of the school setting.
Come on man, where is that Noragami season 3 masterpiece. We want it, Bones!
Why in every drama or supernatural anime, have to be death at start ? But serious now I've ended first episode of
oshi no ko where at end almost crushed my heart and now this.....
The art in this anime is amazing. It looks damn good.
Must be embarassing for that vampire guy, to get killed by a kid. Then again, Mika supposedly died and yet he's a main character, so maybe white haired vampire guy survived too.
