many seem to let it all out, every opinion or thought. often they seem to be trolls

others seem to open their heart and let it all out in a very serious way

we have a spectrum of people weaving their way through the boards.

do you post but dont give the whole truth? (this is common and i think shows a decent amount of self-preservation)
i.e. censoring one's self

or do you let loose and give us your all

of course there is a middle ground. do you merely censor the most vulberable parts of you, or choose to never share the the truth at all?

EDIT to mods or whomever. this is not a unique topic, but stifling ones self is an important aspect of how we reveal truth, or none at all

I think that I'm more upfront with expressing my opinions and stances in real life, but I do feel compelled to do it online at times too. I don't do any censoring as far as I know.

I realize that the audience is diverse; some will read with empathy and curiosity, whilst others will twist anything you say to the point of offence.

The point is: Self-censorship is a lie to yourself, regardless of the degree. If you're even going to be marginally dishonest, I would rather your mouth stays shut.

Depends on what you mean. I am generally open because anonymity mothafuckas. So no matter what I am not vulnerable. You only know all the shit about baki502 not my true self. So I dont care about that. But I do often take on an opinion that I do not really hold, mostly offensive ones, cause I like pissing people off. Guess that I am not truthfull when I do that, but at the same time I am, since I am using it for something I really want to do.

Basically I lie for personal enjoyment not out of self-preservation.

Weird.

I say only what I think here. It all seems a little pointless to me to stick to a lie when there's no need for it. If it's a topic I don't want to talk about, I won't say anything about it. If anything, I probably censor myself more in real life. Saying what people want to hear, making impartial comments, hiding what I actually think. Though in those cases, it's more to just get accepted quicker than fearing about divulging sensitive info.

I don't censor most of the things I say here that concern myself, but if I'm talking about someone I know I will hold back for their sake because I don't want to just start throwing out someone else's personal life to a bunch of strangers.

Most of the time i actually write like i speak to my friends and i dont really need to censor myself. When i swear i just use * in f*ck for example only because it seems that i care at least a little about people who are sensitive to swear words

It depends on the situation or what I'm on and why I'm censoring myself.

If it's a site like Omegle, then of course I'm going to censor myself. The only people who are idiotic enough to reveal personal information on Omegle are those with little to no internet sense.

If it's a site like this, then depending on who's trustworthy and who isn't, I might censor a lot about myself or very little.

But on MAL though, I tend to come here to have fun, not just to talk about anime/manga, but other stuff too as that's what certain areas of the site are for. If this site was only for that purpose, it wouldn't get half as much activity as it does lol.

Before I write something on a forum/IM I often think too much about whether or not my opinion is worth sharing, which usually ends up with me convincing myself that it's pointless and I end up not writing anything at all. When I do share my opinion I try to make it as impersonal as possible.

I try to act more mature/neutral since I got "banned" (actually, I requested my account to be deleted) from a site because I said "f*ck you" to the admin.
I admit I was childish.
So basically I try to not swear as much and stay neutral to sensitive topics while still stating my opinion.

It depends on where I am and who I'm talking to. I don't like offending people just for the sake of offending them, but if they say or do something that's patently stupid, I usually don't hold back what I'm thinking.

Even while keeping anonymous, I value honesty too much. I'm an awful liar. Instead, I just choose not share.. Opinions on relatively trivial topics are fair game, while more personal matters tend to stay that way. It applies less in private conversation, although I'm still hesitant to reveal much. I'm basically the same in real life -- naturally reserved.
