Information about a second anime season was leaked on a non-official Chinese streaming site when the first season just ended airing.

In order to accentuate a clear cut in the storyline including a probable timeskip etc.
Not to mention, announcing the manga to only go on hiatus would have taken a lot of the impact the final few chapters had, that was brought by feelings of uncertainty. Knowing it would eventually continue anyway would have made a lot of subtle hints unnecessary and obvious.
So increased shock value was surely another reason.
