Quite sad really, but Ginko made it back, even though those villagers doubted... So far I've learned, never doubt the Mushi master Ginko.

It was pretty sad what happened to the guy's wife.
And it looks like those Mushis turned into a dragon, even though at first I thought it was a centipede =P

just beautiful and sad at the same time.....

Mushishi really provides you a strong spiritual experience that will enlighten your soul.....

Another really sad episode T__T.... he never found his wife.... and then her boat washed up TT___TT

That and the thing about how the villagers gave up searching.... but at least they made it back safe ^^

And really the only thing that I was thinking about in this ep is how much I wanna know about Ginko's past >.<

Sig WILL change soon~

I'll say. I thought for sure that he was gonna sacrifice himself and jump into the boat with his "wife."

At least he came to terms with what he did and (sort of) apologized. I still wonder if all those missing people really drowned...hm. Maybe another Bermuda Triangle? xD

So great and sad episode. In this episode more than half a year has passed. Ginko sure takes his time.

I wouldn't say this story was that sad or at least to a certain degree like the past few eps. The guy seemed more at peace that he was able to see his fiance/wife again and be at rest with a conclusion that his wife was only lost at sea for a few days being in the mushi time frame.

Is it me or am I the only 1 curious to know what time period the story is based in, because Ginko's clothing attire is more accustom of a modern 20th century ensemble.

This was touching, and I'm glad the man found peace as did the wife. I also thought of a centipede when I was that creature, scary.

Beautiful episode. It wasn't really explained why she turned into a mushi though. And why she didn't know it or anything had happened, as well. Oh well. Mysteries need to be preserved I guess.

it's so terrible imagining his wife slowly starving to death over that three day span. it's not quite explained why the mushi took her form, however.

it seemed as if they were trying to lure her husband with them, as evidenced from the fact that he could no longer see the shore. but it's still a big ol' WHY? do they hunt people who don't want to go back to shore??

beautiful and sad episode, however. it was lovely seeing him with the village girl.~

This episode was more about coming to terms with reality. Ginko even said at the beginning it was stupid to continue hoping because she's either dead or started a new life by now. However, the man still continued to hope somehow his wife was still out there on that boat waiting for him. His new wife(?)/friend said she was worried about him losing himself in the sea because he spends so much time looking out into it.

When the chance arose for him to go out and find his wife, he had no second thoughts about it. He would've spent the rest of his life in the sea looking for his wife who is obviously dead or already began a new life. He almost lost himself to the sea when he found what he thought was his wife, as he stopped seeing the shore. He came to terms with reality though thanks to Ginko, and the illusion of his wife dissipated. He now knew it was pointless to continue hoping for a long-lost cause and he re-gained his will to live.

His wifes boat was carried away because it seems she lost the will to live (Most likely because of the fight) and people who don't have a will to live get devoured by the sea. The mans only will to live was to see his wife again someday and when he found the illusion of his wife he no longer had a reason to live and that's why he couldn't see the shore anymore.

But then he remembered about his new life. He was now a member of that village and people cared about him. The illusion disappeared and he had a will to live once again and was able to see the shore once again. He returned Home. If he had to set out into the sea only months before when he was sitting on the rock near the shore, he would've lost himself to the sea as he had no other reason to live. But thanks to Ginko, he was able to become a member of the village and thanks to this when the time came he was able to find a reason to continue living and was able to find his way home.

These are just notes I recorded after watching the episode. Not saying all this is true. These episodes are very symbolic in many ways and I enjoy trying to decipher them.

Just like a past ep of Mushishi, Mushis aren't good nor bad so we can't say they're bad here.
As for me, I'll just treat them as natural organisms or phenomena.

Agree w/ everyone here. It was beautiful at the same time, it was sad.

Ginko really helped Shiru to face the reality about his wife and start living a new life

with the new woman. That scene really made me smiled.

I really thought that they would found Michihi in bones coz Shiru said it was years ago.

What a mysterious show yet interesting! :)

The Mushi aren't trying to do anything particularly good or bad, they are just trying to live. You could say the same for humans, in a way.

The music was even more divine than usual in this episode. I had my hopes and when he found out what was supposed to be his wife, I actually believed everything was going to end nicely. I didn’t end up exactly happily, but neither melancholically.

I’m glad Shirou was able to accept she wasn’t there anymore and could live on his new life at the village without much remorse.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

By the time the guy turned around and pointed in the wrong direction, saying the shore was that way, I was already feeling so sad. If anything, Mushishi actually does tragedy really well - even when you don't have much time (literally) to 'connect' with the characters, the writers or directors or whoever do a great job of humanising them in a short time-frame.

The time period is between the Meiji and Edo period, when Japan is still kind of closed off from the rest of the world. It states it at the very beginning of the manga (notes).

I know this is what the show said and I have seen this sentiment a lot on these forums but I can’t help but to disagree with it. I think it is perfectly reasonable to call mushi good or bad depending on how they help or hurt humans. That is the same criterion that is used for animals, plants, and any natural phenomenon. Humans change the environment to suit their own comforts. We build houses to protect us from the world; we build parks that house what nature that is pleasant to us. While I intellectually understand the argument to protect nature in its entirety, good or bad, I know that I would be unable to fully live such an ideology; I will still swat mosquitoes.

One kinda sad and magical episode. I admit that I don't get 100% of what's happening in this anime, but I still like it, even if it's kinda more mysterious to me because of this, lol
