This was pretty enjoyable, animation is very nice and krisp and the art style reminds me alot of Dr katz, it wasnt anything amazing but this could be an enjoyable ride

I loved the ED, its rough rotoscoped movements were very pretty

If you don't like the art that's fine by me but calling it "pretentious" is just ignorant. This is exactly what Matsumoto's manga looks like. The guy was trained in Europe (Italy or France, I think?). It's much more faithful to his style than the Tekkon Kinkreet movie was.

You can tell Masaaki Yuasa has loads of respect for the guy by the first episode alone, honestly.

Wow people are seriously complaining about how "shitty" and "sloppy" the artstyle and the animation is?

Great first episode, surprisingly laid-back, the art style is pretty unique. OP song is kickass, the characters are a bit bland, but other than that 9/10 episode!

The animation is good for what it's trying to do. The voice actors are great, especially the Chinese dialogues that sound natural and not choppy. The story sounds interesting and exceeds my expectations of this anime.

- I can play ping pong.
Liking this already. Smile seems to be hiding his talent for whatever purpose. Chinese player seems cool.

I don't know if 11 episodes could cover 55 chapters, but I hope so.

Wow. I thought it would be a joke because of the drawing but NO. They are speaking OLYMPICS :)) I played simple ping pong but I'm no expert that's why my jaw drops every time they talk about hand grips, slice or chops etc. It's fantastic!

Brilliant stuff this. I'm glad I've read a couple of bloggers take on this show, because as usual the MAL score doesn't reflect how good this is. Must be the lack of little girls with big eyes.

The humor, the voice acting, the soundtrack. Just spot on.

Great start. I feel like they've nailed Koizumi, seems Sori's adaptation was a point of reference, too, and the art style evokes well that of Matsumoto, but I'm a little underwhelmed by the editing and animation. The ping pong rallies are phenomenal in the manga, but nothing really of note thus far in the anime. But I guess they're saving the best 'til later. Can't wait for Dragon.

I sure am late to the party, aren't I? But I seriously loved this episode, although it's hard to say why exactly. It's the first time I see this art style in anime, but it feels familiar somehow, and I loved every bit of this. It reminds me of my youth.

Two things I loved about this episode: the Chinese guy actually speaking Chinese is pure awesomesauce. They almost never do that, and if an anime has another language it's only two sentences for convenience issues. This, on the other hand, is glorious (helps that he's pretty OP too, which makes him - paradoxically enough - quite relatable in a way).

Other thing I liked was the way the friendship between the two mains was portrayed, it reminds me a lot of an old friend of mine. They had me holding my sides laughing quite a few times, but it was never the 'in-your-face' kind of humor. Those delinquents were really realistic too, for once. Petty and annoying, just like the real ones.

I've seen lots of people comparing this to Mushishi and Aku no Hana, and having seen neither of those I am unable to compare. However, I don't really think there is a need to. This is unique, but it's good in its own way. It isn't pretty sometimes, but it's the most realistic high school I have seen in any fictional media, ever. The room where they played could have been the cafetaria of my old school, it was so similar. If it's not your style, drop it. It's perfectly possible and no one will hold it against you, I can perfectly understand if you don't. But don't go bashing it or comparing to other shows or hating on people who liked / didn't like it because of that.

First time watching a sports anime, and about ping pong? I always thought that sports anime is shit, but this has proven me utterly wrong. Who would've known that something like ping pong could be this intense. I'm really glad that I found a review of this series at Kotaku, else I would've missed this piece of art.

I agree with the post above me that the Chinese guy speaking actual Chinese is rare in anime and makes this show that much better.

About the art style, I got used to it in the first five minutes, but that was thanks to having had watched other anime with a similar "odd" art style. The art is different and that's one of the things that makes Ping Pong unique.

I love sport's animes. 2 of my top anime's are sport which are kuroko no basket and prince of tennis 2. I've been waiting for a table tennis anime for ages but this anime just made me cry. It's one of those anime's you'll see on like cartoon network - childish. Can someone please tell me if it actually gets better because right now, i have no motivation to watch another minute of it

LOL bro, this is way more mature than your top 2 sports, Kuroko and PoT.

Suggestions:

1) Learn the definition of "childish".
2) Then come back and we will see whats childish and what isn't.

The sequence where they commented the play from just the sounds of the ball was perfect.

Excellent first episode: characters and situations are set in a quick yet efficient manner. Plus the gorgeous animation (especially the key animation). Will probably be another 10.

Only good things to say about this episode really : the soundtrack was great, the comedy was good without actually needing to be in your face, and while the artstyle is very unusual and kind of unsettling at first, it somehow works perfectly well with the very dynamic animation.
Man, that Peko v. China sequence was awesome.

I also really appreciated the fact that a foreigner actually speaks in his mother tongue: really helps with the immersion.

I sense a lot of potential there. This shall be fun.

Intense OP and mellow/charming ED.

Surprisingly the art isn't that hard to get use to.

To describe that in one word, wacky. The art is far out there and has intrigued me. It's unique but doesn't seem like it's trying too hard to be different. The characters kept me laughing a good deal through this episode, Peco's smartass remarks cracked me up. I'm still chuckling at the irony of Smile. The matches are very engaging, wow who knew you could make watching ping pong fun?

The opening song captures the nuttiness of this show well with those screams.

Got use to the animation style and it's not bad at all. It just works. Though the opening animation was really half-assed just reused looping scenes.

The characters are really interesting especially the Chinese player. It's pretty cool how they actually have him speaking Chinese.

That was great, and the art is much more consistent and clean than the manga's (at least the beginning of it). The Chinese sounds completely legit too. I don't usually watch adaptations of manga I've read before hand, but I think this is going to have to be the exception.

not really. Reading through this thread, the amount of mainstream artstyle bashing was rather irritating and flat out stupid. Ping pong's art is weird and it's definitely not unexpected for people to be thrown by it. I don't understand why people were so upset that others had a negative first impression.

The animation was good for the ping pong scenes but besides that everyone looked pretty ugly. The characters seem somewhat interesting. Smile seems like he's super badass at ping pong but he doesn't show his strength and the other kid who wanted people he beat to call him mister was kind of cool with his charismatic personality. I thought the dialogue with the Chinese player was an interesting perspective on ping pong in Asia.

I have never seen a sports anime before this so I thought this would be a good place to start considering everyone has praised this anime to no end.

It was okay. The artstyle I found really distracting and it made it a little hard to follow.

I will admit that the ping pong match between Wenge and Peco was pretty fucking cool. Peco got rekt.
