So much tragic backstory for Rei. His whole family died because of a stupid drunk driver. The moment with Momo was really sad :( He didn't like shogi at first and said yes to his dad just so he can survive. He got so good at it, that his step siblings went downhill. The brother is doing terrible at school and the sister just hates his guts. The comparison with Rei and the cuckoo bird was very clever. This was an emotional episode.

The best dramas make you unable to choose a side.
While his past was tragic, I cant really blame the children of that household in acting that way. He was really like a cuckoo.
The difference could have been the father, but thats easier said than done in the world.

What's up with last week's anime!

First Hibike!, then Natsume and then 3-gatsu. All three episodes (episode 5 of each individual anime) are contenders for individual episode of the season and all aired last week! I haven't seen three fantastic episodes midway the season of any season in the same week in a long, long while.

Hibike! probably just edged it (in almost every English and Japanese sites out there) but I loved both Natsume and 3-gatsu episodes as well.

The second half was beautiful. I'm impressed that Shaft managed to present Rei's backstory well especially with the cuckoo metaphor.

It's all in the manga. This is a faithful adaptation for better or worse.

Quite well directed an adaptation for sure.
I know. Despite having Shaft elements on it, it manages to adapt the source material well. I like how it adapts 2 chapters per episode, no indication of a rushed/inconsistent pacing.

This prologue served really, now you understand even better the reasons for which the main character, is found in the current environment. Touching certain narrative passages, among which, I quote the first to find themselves in front of their dead loved ones and hear how the activity is slipped away from their bodies: touch them and feel its cold emanating, it's a really sad feeling. The second, is the move from the frying pan into the fire, finding himself in the case of the protagonist having to attend to family disintegration and indirectly be guilty. However, as a whole is another good test for these souls, that manages to be tender and cruel at the same time. To mention the drawings, really superb, ditto the soundtrack.

As a side note, dogs and cats talking don't manage to be funny at all here. Maybe because they decided to actually use seiyuus with them.

Nevertheless, Leader in Honey and Clover II was awesome.

The imagery in this show is amazing. This has been my favorite episode of the series so far and I can honestly say I'm hooked now. I'm looking forward to learning more about Rei. Also, the backgrounds never cease to amaze me they're gorgeous.

Hmm this was a another great episode and quite a bittersweet one at that
Its nice that we get to see what Rei's childhood was like and man he sure had a rough one losing his whole family in one accident. His foster family though was nice for the most part apart for the daughter. Man what a bully and a attention seeker.

But we get to see how Rei actually developed into the person he is now.
And the reason why he moved out and become a loner but also a master at Shogi.

The plot with Momo though was pretty funny especially when they encountered the overexcited dog lol. The inner thought for that dog was funny.

At least the dog was apologetic about the fact that it caused momo to trip
and fall though

Cute episode though and Rei taking care of Momo was nice and hearwarming to see

Lol even the pets have their inner thoughts expressed lol

Hmm im loving the fact that this episode shows Rei's childhood
but damn losing your whole family in one day is a terrible thing
I can't imagine how hard it will be for a child

hmm it seems that Rei's fathers family is rather difficult
and Kiawako was horrible at the funeral treating a family member like that

hmm even in his foster home Rei still had a hard life eh
man what a rough childhood
man Kyouko was such a bully and a attention seeker as well

So thats why Rei wanted to leave his foster home
he didn't want to cause damage to the relationship between the family members

Rei bringing Momo was cute. Funny pets.
We already knew his ded parents, but they decided to reveal sis in this flashback, good pacing of backstory.
Your lie in march, and Kaori returns with mc abuse. Scary eyes in the moonlight.
heavy cuckoo analogy
Nice to know his view on shogi & motivation. He doesn't like it, but learned it to stay close to his real dad, and ironically to leave his foster dad asap to protect the messed up family.

The thing that resonated with me the most this episode was Kyouko's despair during their last shown game. The enormous time difference, the small gestures, the clock slowly ticking down to zero. And then her dad making her quit professional shogi in the end. Just started reading the manga and SHAFT is doing a superb job of going above and beyond with this adaptation.

This anime is Brilliant. Rei's past was crazy, and we finally found out who the one girl was in the previous episode, or er 2 episodes ago, whatever. Damn the whole family taken out. That funeral was rough too.

Interesting how "Father" handled taking Rei in and basically disregarding his own children.

I see it's implied that his foster sister sexually abused him when he was younger. We saw in another episode that she sat on him and smirked with a menacing grin, some might have missed it or forgot about it since the scene only lasted like 2 or 3 seconds.

The fuck does one have to do in his previous life to suffer so much in this one? Parents and beloved little sister dies, grandfather too old to take care of him, aunt plotting to throw him into an orphanage so that her husband can take over grandpa's hospital. He gets taken in by his father's old shogi rival and becomes traumatized by the fact that his talent for shogi surpasses that of his new "father's" kids. And in the end he has to leave even that little semblance of a family behind because he believes that it's all his fault. And all that before he even turned 18.

Damn, I feel depressed just typing all that out... the episode was so damn good in presenting Rei's back story.

On a side note, Momo is way too cute. Her reactions and her actions are all adorable. You just can't help wanting to pinch her cheeks! Oh, and that documentary... funny to say I actually watched the real one.

Best episode yet. Looking forward to this every single week.

Momo-chan getting hurt broke my heart. Seeing the dog sad after he realized he made Momo-chan cry also broke my heart.

What happened to Rei's family, being adopted but not accepted, being challenged when he never really loved the game (despite his immense talent and skill), not finding a place where he truly belonged, wanting to move out because he didn't want to tear the 'adoptive family' apart, etc. all of it broke my heart.

Stop breaking my fucking heart! D:

A lot of hate for Kyoukai in this thread.
To be honest, she is a pretty realistic charter.
Imagine someone invading your family and taking over what you are aspiring for.

I've never liked SHAFT to be honest, and only decided to watch Sangatsu no Lion because the manga it is based on shares the author with Honey and Clover. Now I can't express how glad I am this one specific studio is making the anime, because the work they do here is simply brilliant. Every episode makes me speechless, this one especially - literally no words on how greatly directed it was. Every feelings Rei goes through are so vividly shown, starting from tenderness when his "father" gave him his cardigan, and ending on despair he fell into when he saw Momo's scratches. Wow, just wow. An award for portraiting peple's emotions.

We're quite fortunate that Shaft is showing an incredible amount of restraint when it comes to this series. Honestly didn't think they had it in 'em, given their recent works. Not that they're recent works are bad, I mean, but how manic their directing style usually is - it would have been an awful mix with March Comes in Like a Lion.

It's been so long since I've read the manga, so I forgot how tough of a life Rei's had. He's obviously the type of guy who holds it all in(also the type of guy to constantly blame himself), until he can't anymore, like the scene with Momo(reminded him of his own younger sister, which was quite heartbreaking). Had to be incredibly tough for him to comfort Hinata in episode 3 without breaking down himself.

Always found it interesting how Masachika Kouda ended up being Rei's savior, but in doing so neglected his own kids, thereby causing even more stress for Rei. You can definitely blame his parenting style, but it's also not so black-and-white. He's not a bad guy.

Anyway, one of the best shows of the season.

I thought this was an okay episode, then I came here and apparently everyone is praising it?
I will make it clear, I don't really care for the "dramatic" stuff that happen in this show; they just make the show beyond boring for me, since they are so drawn-out and don't touch me in the least, with the exception of Hinata's breakdown moment in episode 4, but that's the only scene that managed to touch me. Yet people think this episode was more touching? ...I will never understand that.
Maybe it's just me, but the only thing I liked about this episode was the part with Momo. Rei's backstory was okay, I guess.

Honestly, I will keep watching this show just for the Kawamoto family.

Interesting to see how Rei ended up at his foster home. So he didn’t like shoji then… does he now? Or has it always been a tool for him to "escape" with? I love that they addressed his backstory so early on. There's obviously more too it but I feel much more "attached" to Rei as a character now that we know some more details about his past.

Didn't really get the impression that he liked Shogi from the previous episodes and it looks like he didn't when he was younger; wonder if he does now.

Those talking animals need to go away.

Thought the cuckoo comparison was a bit too much; they clearly weren't talented enough. Thanks to Rei it just happened a bit sooner.

This series has been fantastic so far, god damn. I hear Umino wanted Shaft for this series and it looks like this has been an excellent combo because her writing and the visuals make for an excellent experience so far.

So, about the scene last episode with Kyouko. A lot of people seem to assume it was sexual assault. But, honestly, I'm not so sure at this point. What if Rei was in love with her at one point and that scene with her in the bed, which at first glance does come across as kind of sexual, was just her bullying him like we saw in this ep? If he did grow up to like her in that way then her hatred for him could definitely lead to complicated feelings. That said, hopefully this will be expanded on later in the series when she inevitably shows up in the present day.

This series is really getting going now. I have endless sympathy for nearly all the characters involved. It's so interesting to see how Rei got to where he is now, through bonding with his father over shogi and then trying to impress his "new father". The only person that really bothered me in this episode was Rei's adoptive father; the way he had his children competing for his affection by being good at shogi was appalling. I even feel sorry for Kyouko, as seeing it from her perspective, her father was stolen away by some other kid. I can see why she'd despise Rei. But that just makes me feel worse for Rei, since he lost his family and then had to leave the second one. He's a good guy with an unfortunate past. I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series progresses.
