symbv said: The only series in this season that actually got fans screaming is KuroBas2, but then given most of the fans are dedicated fans (most of them are female) it is not really that unexpected. And their enthusiasm is clearly reflected in Amazon ranking, with BD vol.1 now at #4 and every single volume of the series' BDs and DVDs in top 100. Yes, this is to be expected. Kurobasu's fanbase has also grown since the anime not to mention the budget seems to have increased for the second season and it is bringing many new popular characters into the scene. Glad to hear fans are screaming because I am too! :D symbv said: They also like the sakuga of Kyoukai no Kanata, Yozakura Quartet and of course, Kill la Kill. But people also find the stories in KnK and Yozakura (also Kyosougiga) not so clear - questions like why this happens, what does this person have to do with the other person etc came up quite often. Yeah, that's my reaction to Kyokai no Kanata too. Sakuga is amazing but the story...not so much. Haven't watched Yozakura yet. symbv said: Kill la Kill is indeed got a lot of fans excited but there is no lack of fans who found the fast pace dizzying and the old 90 style design obsolete, so it is hard to say the fans are unanimous in being awed and impressed -- some people clearly have their hearts captured but some are not so sure (at least not yet). This is quite understandable. I hope in the episodes to come it will become better. I like it though. symbv said: Nagi no Asukara got high mark for its art and sakuga (as expected of PA Works) but the NTR-esque story that may drag on and on got quite many not sure if they will watch till the end. Yes, the sakuga and color schemes were superb. But to me it felt like a shoujo manga with some moe...I loved it so much. But yeah, 26 episodes so who knows how long the drama will be. symbv said: Golden Time and White Album 2 got some warm reception but I have not seen a lot of excitement so far. I like Golden Time except for Koko(Kuko?). White Album 2 was definitely a surprise for me....it was much better than I expected. I hope it keeps it up. symbv said: Two anime indeed got quite a lot of "wow, it is better than I expected!" comments. One is Non Non Biyori, with many fans in Japan saying "it is just where I grew up!" "this is the countryside I have been longing for!" or "it brought back memory of my childhood trip to countryside" and many praised its meticulous art and visual. Hmmm. I want to watch this but so many others to watch....but I might drop a few anime soon so I'll pick this up maybe. symbv said: The other is Walkure Romaze. I went to the forum expecting to see lots comments about panty shot and ecchi and boy was I surprised to read almost as many comments about how good the sakuga is and how good they drew the horses and armor (and noting that 8bit actually got dedicated staff working on horse design and armor design for the anime). Just goes to show that no one should underestimate the level of anime fans in Japan. Even in an ecchi anime they won't just look for the fan service but instead they care about the whole package. Now this is a surprise for me. I have not watched it but some western fans were complaining about 'forced ecchi' lol. I will probably not watch this though. symbv said: Other than that, anime like "Miss Monochrome" or "Sekai de Ichiban Tsuoku naritai" (nickname SekaTsuyo) wowed people with the ED (the former) and voice acting (the latter) but on all other departments these two do not really impress people that much. Also two anime I am not watching this season. Thanks for the detailed information. I'm waiting for another two-three weeks when most anime will have 3-4 episodes in. Then we will see how rankings change. Wonder what will be the surprise hit this season! I hope it's Yowamushi Pedal. It gave the feelings I got when I watched the first episode of KuroBasu. |

While i usually disliked KyoAni show, its first eps was really awesome Its too early to say anything definitive, but Kyoukai no Kanata has had one of the weakest starts for any KyoAni anime and is just kinda floundering around the middle of the pack in the preorder rankings after the first episode. Yeah agree, even me as KyoAni fans did not find it it great. But expecting the ranking to pick up along the development of the story, hopefully |

phoenixalia said: I don't put too much hope on Yomamushi Pedal because unlike KuroBas its character design is definitely not drawn to the moe side of the female audience. From what I read in forums, people found it interesting but I did not feel a kind of passion that got people to buy its BD/DVD. This also seems to be what is happening to other sports anime this season like Diamond no Ace or Hajime no Ippo. I would say all of them should be counted as success as long as it gives enough boost to the original manga. Wonder what will be the surprise hit this season! I hope it's Yowamushi Pedal. It gave the feelings I got when I watched the first episode of KuroBasu. One thing about Walkure Romanze, fans in Japan came to the series in full expectation of "forced ecchi" as this is the standard requirement for the genre, so they set pretty high tolerance for that (if anything, some even said there is *not* as much ecchi/fan service as they first expected). What they care about is how every aspect in the anime combine together to provide an entertaining watching experience, and they could feel the amount of care and effort the staff put into this "mere harem ecchi anime" with love and respect. And this is what impressed the people who watched it. How likely such reactions could come from the western fans?? I really don't know. |
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Kinmoza will be at 7000+ next week for sure. Oh nice Symphogear G is near 10,000 of course it will finish at 10,000+ in a week or two. Kill la Kill doesn't seem all that special, I dropped it, KnK is pretty good on the visuals (especially monster design) and fight scenes, if Mirai stops trying to slash and stab the mc, she might be an ok character soon. Never seen Yozakura. |

Kill la Kill indeed wowed many anime fans, particularly those who care a lot about sakuga, and given its TTGL lineage, I have a feeling that it will start with a high base when it becomes available for preorder. After that it all depends on how the story goes (and according to the interview with Trigger staff it seems to be full of big moments and twists) and how much they can sustain the super active level of sakuga. It can indeed become a topseller but it can just as easily flop. |

What symbv said in the episode 6 discussion pretty much sums up why I, and maybe other people, liked it so much. symbv said: I have grown more and more fond of this series. It is really like reading some Japanese literature. People who call it weird should read more highbrow Japanese literature to see what is really weird. This work keeps a popular touch firmly on the ground while gives really mesmerizing portrayal of the Kyoto scenery, care and attention to character depiction and incisive, sometimes even poetic, insight on life, love, family and of course death. Truly wonderful. |

It's been a while since a KyoAni show was even guaranteed to be the top seller (and even that isn't by virtue of it being KyoAni alone), so I'm not sure where that notion comes from. |

I set it aside along with just about everything else when I had basically no internet access for a couple of weeks, but I never saw it as being worth the bother of picking back up again. No, it was very good from the beginning through the end; it's just not the type of series that sells a lot of discs because it is pretty low keyed from start to end as well. It's like a fine wine in a beer chugging world. It also is geared more towards adults than most series, and was far more story based than visual based (only one episode I think was very visually compelling from an animation pov, though I loved every episode), and both of those things don't bode well for disc sales. Still, I cannot believe that these series are meant to sell a lot, and as such I have a feeling that the production was structured in a way where a lower volume of sales would be considered a success for the company. Personally I have found this season to be rather lackluster. Nothing really captured my imagination so far, whereas last season I had three, Uchouten, LoveLab and Kami ga nai that had me straight from the first season. While there are a couple of shows that I think has potential, nothing is making me lust for the next episode. Here's hoping for a stronger week 2. |

My underdog animes to root for this season are Non Non Biyori, Yozakura Quartet and Gingitsune, Teekyuu! 2 (BD&DVD sales) and 3 and Miss Monochrome. I found them pretty enjoyable! Takei_Hisa said: YESSs Kiniro Mosaic <3 What is Kami Inai selling so little :( I think the primary reason is: don't kill your protagonist (driver of action) and strongest character off in the 3rd episode unless you have a stronger and better character ready by no later than the 5th. That was the kiss of death for this show. This show never replaced Humbert, Ai was poised at the end of the 3rd episode to take over this role, but the writer never developed her: She never really became the main driver of the action, instead was primarily the witness to events, this could have been fine, but none of the arcs after the 1st had a character as strong or as vivid as Humbert. Everyone else suffered by comparison and everyone disappointed by Humbert's death were vindicated that this show could not recover. Personally I found this disappointing, I loved that they had the courage to kill Humbert off, I loved the whole concept behind the city of the dead, but from the ending of that Arc through the rest of the series, the show lost its focused, the plots became weaker and by the end I think it had lost 90% of its initial audience. They took a huge plot gamble (one that writer's books tell you to never do) and unfortunately it failed. Plus I think we all need to always keep in mind that drama's just do not sell well to the animation demographic, as such our expectation of success for such series needs to reset to a lower number. Few shows sell more than 5,000 discs and of these shows, the vast majority are light hearted shows full of action, comedy or romance. Adair said: I'm sad that Free! didn't sell more, but it's pretty a obvious from this that male otaku still dominate most of the market. At least it made it in the cut off...and hopefully they'll get better as more people know that it came out. I call troll, troll troll troll. Back to under your bridge. Either that or you misread the rankings and thought this week was the first week. In that case rest assured: Free v1 sold 30K discs, an incredible number of discs. |

And saying that you prefer anything but KyoAni to be on top means that even a cheaply produced and poorly animated series would be preferable for you. And now wouldn't it be natural for people to take you as an unreasonable and unconditional hater of KyoAni? Amiluhur said: I'd prefer it if literally anything else but that topped the Blu-Ray charts this season but I'm not gonna hold my breath.Has the predictions fro Fall season come out already? Been expecting Kyoukai no Kanata to come out on the top. While i usually disliked KyoAni show, its first eps was really awesome People can make of it what they will, I literally just don't want to have to hear bandwagon fans crowing about "Godani finding a way" and have to see that ridiculous image macro of Ian Malcolm bandied around the internet anymore. The show can do well and all, but I just would like a little bit more proof positive that top seasonal sales are not an entitlement to Kyoani. I don't think that's at all an unreasonable wish to have. I think you're time is best spent frowning upon the people actively wishing for it to fail outright for no particular reason. I've kind of noticed that for TV series it's almost necessary to have a certain threshold of bishoujo/bishounen characters in order to sell well. Uchouten Kazoku had Benten, but I don't think she's quite the type of character we're referring to. Symphogear G had like 6 girls of various personality and body types in revealing and often skin tight battle armor singing idol pop music while being voiced by popular idol seiyuu and Free had muscle armed men up the wazoo flexing and swimming in a summer themed anime so there you go. |

Uchouten is easily my most favourite show from last summer, and the first season pretty much just covered first part of planned trilogy of novels, and still left too many things unanswered. And with the sales this poor, there's almost likely no guarantee for the second season . . . . whatever! At least it's good enough that there's still studio like P.A. Works that's willing to do risk-taking project like this one |

Kaioshin_Sama said: But the person you responded to (Amiluhur) already said he is no KyoAni fan and usually does not like KyoAni show. So what were you trying to prove? To preempt those "KyoAni fanboys" who seem to reside more in your imagination (or some forums you visited in the past) but whom we have seen little sign of showing up in this thread or this board so far? Besides, I also commented who KyoAni found some good way to achieve commercial success, does this mean by that I am automatically a "bandwagon fan"? This is why your tone and words give people impression that you are not just a skeptic but downright a hater, which only stopped people (and not just the real KyoAni fanboys) from listening to you when you start to talk about KyoAni.People can make of it what they will, I literally just don't want to have to hear bandwagon fans crowing about "Godani finding a way" and have to see that ridiculous image macro of Ian Malcolm bandied around the internet anymore. A show can get good feedback but still would not sell too well if it lacks a good motivation for them to buy it. They have watched the show so why pay a small fortune to buy it (BD/DVD in Japan are far from cheap) ?? This is why so many anime put in all kinds of tricks to get people to want to own the discs, and characters that appeal to the watcher (this is where moe can come into play) is one such trick. But is it that simple? No, which is why even a moe-filled series like Rokyubu SS can sell only so many. To go really beyond that level requires many things to work together to really convince people that it is money well spent if they buy the discs. DJIzzyIzzyHitler said: I have a sudden hatred of the japanese anime fans every week and season.Lostt faith in them some time ago.Shuhan said: This sold more than uchouten, man i have a sudden hatred of the japanese anime fanssymbv said: *3,333 *1 Ro-Kyu-Bu! SS [BD]: 2013/09/25 Personally I love Uchouten a lot and I would even say that its animation is pretty good, particularly for its background art depicting Kyoto scenery (I can recognize so many spots I have visited before), and I never went beyond a few episodes of Rokyubu, but I do not feel any need to hate fans in Japan or a need to be sad or angry that Rokyubu is outselling it (despite a big drop from its 1st season sales). Uchouten got really good feedback among fans in Japan, but when it came to spending their hard earned money they decided they have better places to spend it (and no one should think that they just put their money on Rokyubu instead), that's it. And we never know how many of the fans decide to buy the novel, which is much much cheaper, than buy the discs. So such emotional response to these sales figures is really not warranted, in my opinion. |

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

symbv said: I don't put too much hope on Yomamushi Pedal because unlike KuroBas its character design is definitely not drawn to the moe side of the female audience. From what I read in forums, people found it interesting but I did not feel a kind of passion that got people to buy its BD/DVD. That I agree with. Other than three of them, the others boys are not handsome or hot. Look at the GoM, all so hot. Still though, it had a great first episode I felt so I hope it picks up. One more thing, symbv, Samurai Flamenco had a pre-airing event right? Any idea how people felt about it? |

Yeah, the trick is figuring out a way to get people to buy episodes of a show they have probably already seen, or could probably access (through potentially less legal means). I don't know what the typical bonuses are, but I think bonuses like a manga (e.g. Kimi no Iru Machi) or event ticket (e.g. Kakumeiki Valvrave) should probably start becoming the norm. However, I don't know how much those things would cost to include, so maybe they are too expensive? As for emotional reactions to sales data, I don't think people should hate Japanese fans for what they buy, but I can understand why someone might have an emotional reaction to poor or good sales. It's pretty easy to get emotionally invested in a show, so if you find that it's not selling well I can understand feeling disappointed or even sad about it. Also, I think there is a fear that if an anime you like doesn't sell well, studios might stop producing similar shows (and even less likely another season). |
