I generally like female characters more because they're simply attractive, pair that with good personalities and it's perfect.

It's harder to find good male characters since appearance means much less for male characters, you need a lot more to draw people in and make them likeable

Doesn't matter to me at all, it never did except for some time ago when I preferred female protagonists more (and I would pick any random anime, good or bad just because of that) due to my loneliness and lack of women around me irl, I'm still lonely and single but I'm over that.

I judge male characters based on how relatable are they to me

While I judge female characters based on how good of a waifu material they are.

I will not put Rule 63 versions of these characters in my faves.

I usually don't really care, but I find it annoying / bit of a pet peeve of mine in the last time that well-written, believeable or however you might call it, male characters often don't get the deserved recognition because they aren't cute anime girls (or idealized bishounen) ... and often even female characters and others, who just aren't standard cute anime girls.

Normally I like very different types of characters and I mostly don't gender characteristics, but I will always be weak for:
1. Likeable, interesting and especially intelligent too, women and afab enbys.
2. I general strong-willed female characters, just not these overly abusive tsunderes or the like.
and 3. "hard shell, soft core"-men, depending on the character and how they are written of course (because some are just actual assholes and not much more).
I like in general masculinity in some women and enbys too. Rewatched Arcane last month, I'm so down for Vi, okay.

Overall I just like what I like and it's boring to narrow down your view that much, imo.
I just know what character types I can exclude almost by default, especially edgy boys and all these 14 yos r/too smart for you, generic male protagonists and tradwife girls.

My male favorites are the men i simp for which is too many.
My female favorites are the girls i could relate to or really love their personality & style.
That's why i prefer having females in my favorite lists than males.

My bias is very accentuated let's say.

But to be fair, whether a character is male or female is irrelevant to what the anime/manga wants to sell. Generally it tends to be the female characters that get the most attention when this is marketed, but at the same time they are the ones that have the best chance of molding their character and personality for all kinds of narratives as the writers seek to attract a target audience, to Unlike the male character, which is either a means for the public to insert themselves into the story, or is used for a very specific and unpopular public (such as the one that is usually coined as BL or Shoujo, although I do not want to generalize here).

In any case, the only difference between a male character and a female character - if you want to push yourself too hard with that Plot, Development, etc. stuff - is that you only add boobs.

Male characters are on the top. I think it is because there are more male characters with good development than female characters. Unfortunately, female characters are most of times used for fan-service
Besto male characters are Arima Kousei from Your Lie in April, Shinji from Evangelion, and Thorfinn from Vinland Saga. I have other tho

Well it's male apparently, 6 males out of my top 10 favorite. I can't really reasons why I like them but let's say they resonate with me a lot, not in terms of being relatable or anything but still pretty personal for reasons to me. For the girls, mostly I just find them attractive in a lot of ways

It's sad for me to agree but yes.....it's hard for me to find a male character i would put in my favs (i only have a few but not enough space in MAL), they're usually forgettable I feel because the authors want the readers/watchers (who are mostly male) to self insert. This is my list but I'd add Itsuki Koizumi, Armin Arlert, Thorfinn and Loid Forger

Male, mainly bc most of the anime and manga I've seen so far have a majority male cast/are male-led. They are often more interesting and entertaining than the female characters.

But in all honesty, anime puts way more efforts into female characters than most males but when a male character is brilliantly written, they are brilliantly written

I've never really given it much thought. I think that on average I prefer female characters, but my favorites list here is comprised of ten males and ten females, so it's pretty even, which doesn't really surprise me since I don't take gender into account whatsoever when I'm rating a character. All I care about is whether they're well-written (character development, solid personality, funny, etc.) or not. :P

I think most guys will say they like female chr more, and I'm no exception lol. Usually female characters provide us with emotions and cute moments. The interesting thing is that I don't like most anime that have a female MC, I need a male pov. But basically, a good chr is a good chr, no matter which gender.

I have more male characters on my favorites list because I am either attracted to them or I just simply adore their characterization. Also, it's easier for me to resonate with male characters more. Meanwhile, I like female characters based on how well-written and relatable they are, and there isn't a lot of female characters I can relate to.

mines a bit weird too. i have far more female charas on my favs than male (even on extended) and partly the reason why is i think is because all the male characters i like are the ones that i can see myself in/ have similar personalities- for better or for worse haha. that can be true for female charas too, but my criteria for them is a whole lot more relaxed than for males

I don't really prefer any gender.

I do think we need more great female characters though.

a big part of it the lack of shoujo and jossei. I have seen very few of these, but the ones I have watched have had great female characters.

tohru from fruits basket is in my top 10, and chihaya is at least top 40.

most of my favourites are male, but again, it's not by choice.

like out of the 6 parts of jojo that I have seen, jolyne is my second favourite. and 1/6 being second is damn great results.

gimmie more shows like black lagoon, where the female cast is way better than the male cast.

I feel the same, its easier to make a likable female character with less effort. But a male character's peak is higher than a female's, probably due to most creators being male.

A lot of my favourite shows are Seinen/Shounen and hence my favourites are mostly male but a vast majority of the shows I watch are comedy and I like the female characters more. As to why they don't make it to the favourite list, I think I like the serious male characters better. Maybe if I become a MAL supporter, I will do a favourite 10 male and 10 female cast.

I tend to like male characters better usually, all of my favorite characters on my MAL profile are male but on anime planet i have quite a bit of female favorites too.

Male characters tend to have better personalities, character and are usually more interesting overall and less stereotyped than female characters are.

What makes you like a character? Why specifically do you enjoy male or female characters more?
Depends on what you mean by "enjoy". Most protagonists are male so the protagonists I enjoy are often male. But most characters are female so if I enjoy an anime for the art style I enjoy female character designs more. I've also enjoyed watching characters that are neither male nor female or both at the same time or at different times.

If you have something specific in mind when you say "enjoy" then the answer is... well...

Female characters overall obviously. All you need to make a likable female character is to make them cute and good looking + not annoying. Male characters need to be somewhat unique or compelling in some way like Okabe's entertaining persona, Lelouch's dramatic charisma, or, for some people, loner type characters like Hachiman, Ayanokouji, etc. Basically, female characters are greater in quantity but the few male characters when done right easily overshadow them.

So for male characters you like gigantic edge Lords?

I don't consider Lelouch to be an edgelord like most people, he's pretty much a chuuni. Don't particularly like Hachiman or Ayanokouji, just mentioned them because I was making a point about how male characters need to have some form of engaging quality to stand out and those two do have that.

I tend to like male characters more as a general rule. A lot of the time (in non-female-targeted manga), women aren't written too well, so I usually gravitate towards the men in those series (there are some exceptions, like Akane from Akane-banashi and Maomao from Apothecary Diaries). In shoujo/josei, both female and male characters are usually at least decently developed, I just go for the guys because I think they're cute. 5/8ths of my favorite characters are male.
I'm either crashing out or fujoing out.

I can agree to this to some extent.
Male characters are more often written to be more interesting, some are written to be more realistic (not always of course, but in general maybe), female characters are often written to be overly cute and pandering to the audience. Although there are exceptions for every gender.
There are some really good female characters, also in some mainstream anime, especially in newer ones. Old shounen for example more often had very uninteresting and also (physically) weak female characters, but that got much better. Still, there are less interesting ones imo.

Overall I think there are more stereotyped female characters. Except for the male standard protagonists in isekais and harems, some love interests in shoujo anime and overall male characters in some reverse harems / typical bishounen-anime.
That one "bishie anime" that really surprised me with its writing has been Moriarty, but I like Irene/James the most in there haha. Like yeah, the cis guys are cute and pretty well-written, but him(?)...!!
Normally the character writing of such shows is ... I dunno, is alright, but doesn't really grip me. I like Bungou Stray Dogs too, but some of the character writing is off, although I think they are okay.

Male by a mile.
Most of my favorite, memorable, relatable, well-developed and badass characters are male: Zoro, Light Yagami, Levy, Roy Mustang, Reigen and Mob, Simon and Kamina, Okabe, JoJos, I can go on for hours.
There are very few female characters that I can even tolerate, let alone like. Most of them are annoying stereotypes tsundere, yandere (and other sorts of deres) that constantly get on the Mc's nerves (and mine) or are there just for fanservice.

obviously women
its kinda tough to even make an interesting male character, theres so few characteristics that are socially acceptable for men, all they have is short hair, lack of emotion, physical strength, and carrying some burden all on their own for some reason - male characters are literally not allowed to be interesting, u know what im saying? men are not allowed to be interesting because being interesting is GAY

i generally like characters that break social norms
@elgatosaika very odd take, what's wrong with short hair, and there's handful of interesting male characters

I like both equally, but I relate to male characters more since I'm a guy myself. So, I tend to have more male characters in my favourite list. If I had included "waifu factor" (cuteness, sexiness, etc.), then obviously it'd be more female characters. However, for me to consider a character my favourite, I have to find them well-written and/or relatable.
