Tex, the color scheme used was pretty damn dark.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Berserk and texhnolyze. When characters died in texhnolyze eventually it reached a point where I was like maybe they're just better off, and that is some dark shit.

Re:Zero was the darkest anime I ever watched. The tone was extremely serious throughout as you were forced to witness Subaru's numerous deaths and failings. That particular episode where he returned to the mansion and found everyone dead, truly chilling.

Let us also not forget Beezlebub, he was twisted... the way he murdered Rem was brutal and sickening.

It was the first dark anime I ever watched, and it put me off it for a while!

* a small correction. It's Betelgeuese, not Beelzebub

Why thank you kind sir. I was so traumatised by the event I seemed to have forgotten the names of some characters.

I have yet to watch the other anime which were noted here, but so far Higurashi takes the cake. I would say it was somewhat truly refreshing since I haven't watch a show this brutally fun in a while and that added more appeal to the show, at least for me.

Personally I view a show as being dark when the tone and emotional impact begin to take a toll and I have to pause for a second or stop entirely to process what has happened. With that being said:

Someone earlier said Grave of the Fireflies and along those same lines I'd have to say Barefoot Gen would be one of the darkest. It takes place during the Hiroshima bombing and actually shows people's skin and eyes melting off their bodies. This *extremely accurate* depiction comes from how the writer, Keiji Nakazawa, lived in Hiroshima and had a first-hand account of what happened inside the city. Brutal stuff.

I'd also say Texhnolyze as it deals with nihilisim in a very forward way. It's produced by Yasuyuki Ueda who also worked on Ergo Proxy, Hellsing, and the cult classic Serial Experiments: Lain.

I know it might not seem dark to anyone else, but the last few episodes of Ushio and Tora was def up there for me.

I found Madoka Magica, Monster, Serial Experiments Lain, Devilman: Crybaby and Ergo Proxy dark. But Neon Genesis Evangelion and Berserk are especially dark. I mean, I entered Evangelion expecting for a normal mecha anime and I get depression for life, even if the final message was a positive one. The themes treated in NGE were mature, dark and deep. Berserk surprised me too, from how obscure the story torned in a moment. Those creatures, dismembering and killing undiscriminately and Guts being so dehumanized.

My favourite anime and manga respectively.

Texhnolyze is not only the darkest anime I’ve ever watched, but it’s also my favorite as well. It never breaks it’s seriousness for comedic, or lighthearted moments, and I love it for that. It doesn’t try to adjust to what the audience likes, YOU have to adjust to it. Even berserk has a few funny moments here and there, but I still think Texhnolyze is darker.

Higurashi is probably the darkest anime I've watched. Shion's arc was particularly disturbing, also the arc before the last one with everyone dying one by one was pretty dark.

The Danganronpa series is also pretty dark, but I guess it doesn't count since the anime never quite captured the dark feeling of the games. Also DR2 and V3 is where the most fucked up stuff is at, and only the first game was adapted. Still, DR2's fifth trail was… insane, for lack of a better word.

In my case, I choose 'Berserk' obviously. It's a dark fantasy with a very graphic panels and it's a complex story about human man, looking to avenge his loved one, against the gods, who conspirate against him.

Aside from that, Miura has a way with story writing, he treats his readers or fans like they're intelligent people. He knows how to give depth to his world while still preserving enough mystery to keep it interesting. Miura's art is unparalleled too. Every single panel is packed with more detail than any other manga I've seen.

Berserk definetely.

These come after in terms of bleakness:

1) Grave of Fireflies (holy mother of god, Grave of Fireflies...)
2) Puella Magi Madoka Magica (mahou shoujo are cute and joyful? HAHAHAHA)
3) Monster (philosophical, cynical and with a VERY scary and nihilistic villain)
4) Shinsekai Yori (among the saddest turns of events in the second half)
5) Elfen Lied (anything is sad, from the opening to the ending, but too much forced drama)

Grave of the Fireflies was extremely sad, so in a sense I could say it is the darkest anime I have seen, but I feel like other anime such as Kaiba, Serial Experiments Lain or Texhnolyze, while they are less sad, were more disturbing to me because they contained moments of intense strangeness that could make me feel some existential anguish.

Terra Formars fo sure... Half of the time the screen was completely Black

Honest answer tho, it has to be "Kotoura-san" just because the darkness it kinda came outta nowhere, I've heard that it was a Funny and sad kinda anime, but when i actually watch it was more like Hilarious and fucked up, it was such an emotional rollercoaster that left me exhausted at the end of every episode but wishing for more.

ps: the darkest manga it has be the end of Elfen Lied, I crai evrtime

You should watch Utena if you’re listing Madoka. Madoka Magica is actually fairly idealistic despite its darkness. Utena is cynical on top of being dark: Madoka Magica has a bleak world that can actually be fixed. Utena’s world cannot be fixed (strictly speaking), and the antagonist hits a level of depravity and force of character that could only be topped by the likes of Johan... and well, saying anything more would spoil.

Go watch Utena. Seriously.

Perfect Blue. I want to say Madoka, but I feel like I've seen darker in tone and content.

Perfect Blue has a good mix of dark tone and shocking visuals. What's created is more of an experience than a movie.

I don't really consider edgy stuff dark, persay. If I can laugh at the sheer insanity or absurdity of a show, it's already lost ground. Good dark anime sets a tone and knows it's limits.

That's not to say I dislike edgy and absurd. I liked Magical Girl Site and as far as I can tell, I'm one of a few dozen fans of that show.

I've seen some dark shit, though picking the absolute darkest is surprisingly tough. Regardless, I'll list off the contenders nonetheless:

The Mardock Scramble trilogy
Violence Jack
Devilman Crybaby
Midori Shoujo Tsubaki
Berserk
Gantz
Now and Then, Here and There
Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne
Welcome to the NHK
Perfect Blue
Texhnolyze

Probably Shadow Star. The show pacing is awful its really slow, but always felt creppy and uneasy to watch even when nothing was happening. It got really twisted and messed up near the mid to end I refuse to rewatch it because of one disgusting scene.

Yahll don't know shit until you've seen Shigurui: Death Frenzy. I mean look at that tile. It has death frenzy in its fuckin title. And if you want to continue the darkness to its end in the manga it gets hella fucked. The animation quality is really realistic so it makes it all the more gruesome.

Made in Abyss

There may be animes with violence, gore, and torture. But they seem kind of consistency, so it's not really that impactful after seeing it a couple of times.

However, the screams and visuals in Made in Abyss were on a whole new level. Not only that, but the transition from a happy to a dark feeling made it all the better. I wouldn't call it a dark anime, but some of the scenes are definitely darker than most scenes.

Utena is definetely high on my list, though the only thing that somewhat dissuades me is the large number of episodes. How is its pacing? Is its drama genuine in most parts, or too forced? Also, are there action scenes? What about romance, including yuri romance?

Sorry for the flood of questions, I was always a bit confused on what Utena feels like or is similar to.

as far as single arcs go the part in fullmetal alchemist where the dad mixes his daughter and dog just to renew his license was really messed up, and d-grey man is a lesser known show with a pretty dark plot. But I think of this aspect more as some shows have really messed up parts inside those that are not generally considered "dark" shows overall, then just this one show is purely a "dark" anime.
