It's the king and nino's favorite cake, nino was the one who gave them the apple cake, maybe it'll become lotta's favorite too.

I guess it shows that they are related, this and the love for smoking. And that he is a legitimate heir more than the other prince.

From what I got, apple cake used to be Nino's favorite thing. Now it's chocolate, as stated in a previous episode. I guess it's supposed to be a metaphor for Jean being presented with all the things his sole existence took away from Nino.

When Jean said that Niino comforted him after his parents' deaths, Jean looked like he was sad because he must've realized that at that time, Niino had also lost his father...and no one was there to comfort him.

Definitely my favorite episode so far, the flashback was well done and contained a lot of different emotions, the peaceful days of Niino and his father, as well as Niino befriending Jean, being the best parts.

This show is so good.

Can't believe so many people have ranked it so low.

Really should not be able to rank shows until all episodes have been released

What was the significance of apple cake at the end? Episode ended with it. Does king also love apple cake or what?

Don't know if this have any connection, but the flower language of apple means desire.

i have a question, anyone knows who the Danasama that Nino's father serve refer to? is it the King or the princess aide Abend? i got confused :S

I think when he said Danasama (master), he means Abend, when he said Gokurosama (his majesty), he means the king. He swear loyalty to Abend after all.

oh i see, that make sense

thanks ^^

I imagine what it meant to Jean at the end of the story: he felt guilty and sad about what he had to endure Nino, on the occasion of the train accident. Really exhaustive narration and thoroughly explained the background on an issue so far not well limited by the plot. Now that we know the cards they have in hand, in this round of poker, we could risk something on upcoming opponents' moves. At the end of the winter season, this anime series, will be counted among my favorites.

This episode was beautiful, both in it's execution and also in the visual elements. The backstory of Princess Schnee and her decision to give up her claim to the throne for both her father's sake and for her own self interests was very touching.
The twist of Abend not becoming the Princess' lover and father of her children actually made sense in a way, considering just how many people would be able to recognize their combined resemblance of Jean and Lotte's features to their parents had that actually been the case.
Despite my suspension of disbelief that Nino would actually be accepted as over a decade younger than he actually was when he joined Jean in High School, the process of watching him grow up and mature over the course of this episode was wonderful to behold. His relationship with his father was wonderful, and his father was also a great character in his own right.
The bromance between Jean and Nino was touching, especially with all those special moments that they shared (Nino doing magic to impress Lotte has to be the best of the bunch). Their grief at the loss of their respective parents was palpable and very real, but their conversation after the flashbacks was even better.

I'm not quite convinced that Grossular may be Abend (since given his high profile in ACCA, I find it hard that people would fail to recognize/suspect/investigate him if he really was), but I do wonder just what is in store for us after this reveal.

Apart from the current prince becoming paranoid and trying to do in Jean and Lotte, hence forcing Jean to come clean about his true position, I just don't see any reason for any additional drama in the show, considering how Jean has already stated his lack of interest in the throne itself.

My most favorite episode yet.
I really loved to see the whole flashback in light color pallet.

Princess was really gorgeous and little Lotta was adorable <3
The father-son relationship b/w Nino and his dad was heartwarming :)
The tragic accident was saddening tho :(
It is commendable that Nino stick around that long for his job.

Also, the montage and soundtrack was the best part of the episode <3

Great episode. This is a definitely a series where the patience required to get into it paid off.

Can't wait to see more, since I'm not sure where it'll go from here. One thing's for sure, this was big for Jean's character; this is the first time we've really seen him shaken by anything.

relaxing osts, esp insert was real nice.
lol 25yr old Nino goes to HS, it's relife.
Lots of mysteries revealed, no crazy assassinations or similar, only the trainwreck. Nino+his dad watching Jean forever makes sense. Lotta loli & Nino as magic chocoman so cute. Learn from IBO never trust a chocoman great with lolis.
So confirmed master = owner of the building that the siblings manage = Abend. But still unknown if Abend is Grossler or not. Also early episodes hint strongly Nino has 2 bosses he talks to, one being Grossler.
With their motivations explained, Abend & Nino reasonably could side with the coup.

Man, I can't wait for the soundtrack to come out. I especially like the piano piece where Schnee thanks her father for letting her venture out into the real world.

There's so many details in the opening and this episode shed light on a lot of them.
Maybe Abend had a kid of his own or a relative, Grossular, and Abend passed on his role to him? The fact that they used different voice actors throws me off.

Now that we know more of the past, it makes the times the King conversed with Lotta and Jean extra heartwarming. He's talking to his grandchildren. :)

The scene where Nino spoke to his dad for the last time with the atmosphere all warm and bright thanks to the sunset to the sudden cut of a dark room with Nino's face lit only by the TV was an excellent execution of mood whiplash.
I really liked how cheerful and enthusiastic Nino's dad was and dreaded the moment for his inevitable death.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay so after rewatching I was trying to figure out the character's ages.

Jean: 10 years older than the stupid prince. Meets Nino in his first year in high school (14-15?).
Lotta: A few years younger than the stupid prince. Looks around 5 or 6 when she meets Nino. At least 9 years younger than her older brother.
Nino (What's his real name? Well, not important anymore.): At least 10 years older than Jean. Makes contact with him at age 25. Looks around 10 years old when he asks Abend to take him with his father.

If everything that happened began 33 years ago, wouldn't Nino actually be in his 40's and not his 30's?
A good author leaves the audience enough material to be satisfied with, yet yearning for more.

No. 33 years ago was the faked incident with the ship. Then after that it was probably years for Princess Schnee to find a guy she liked, mary him, and have kids with him. Especially that the faked ship accident happened not long after the Princess was 16 (at this age her portrait was made), so she probably didn't settle down with a family immediately. I bet Jean is max 30.

Probably the best episode so far, loved the storytelling.
First of all, i must say that i find the princess pretty and very cute, it's kinda sad how they died and how Niino was "forced" to do, even though that he lost hist father.

So Jean is supposedly the next king and Lotte is the princess, glad that they explained everything so well in this episode.
And i thought that Groshular was a bad guy lol He is the "master" that was taking care of the princess, it was quite said that he had to let her go, because he was clearly in love with her. He is probably the one who is behind the revolution, now everything makes sense! This episode was amazing.

I still feel kinda bad for Niino, he never had a "life", because his life was always to serve Jean without him knowing it. I hope after the revolution he will have a normal life.
Can't wait for the revolution!!!

So Jean and the bratty prince are cousins. Even if Jean's mother was removed from the family register, he could still claim succession to the throne if he revealed his bloodline. The king would probably prefer Jean to succeed him rather than the bratty prince, and perhaps the king himself is behind the coup? Either way, I'm sure anyone organising a coup would want to prop up Jean as their new ruler, assuming their motivation for a coup is that they don't want Schwan on the throne.

And here I was lowkey hoping the princess would have a baby with Abend. She goes and marries a poor guy and gets knocked up by him :(

I didn't know the age gap between Nino and Jean was that big. I thought they were in their thirties. Stupid Nino's father, forcing his son to be a high schooler lol but then again there are actors in theirs 20s and 30s who pretend to be high schoolers.

The creator is confused. Is this Japan or not? Their school uniforms, bowing to acknowledge one another, this is like a whitewashed Japan. If you're going to pass this off as a foreign country at least try to include non-Japanese mannerisms and fashion.

Nino is lowkey gay for Jean. Jean is lowkey gay.

Such a sad story on so many levels. And more than a little creepy. Your best friend since school is about ten years your elder and sticks around so he can spy on you? Jean is sure taking this in stride. He let Niino go though. I wonder what he really thought at the time.

Whoa. That was the best episode yet and I already had a good opinion of this series.

The princess's independence, the king's love for her and his setting her free, Nino leaving wih his father, Abend indirectly watching over her all these years, the new context of their deaths... all of it. It was all great.

So many questions were answered.

I think Jean was considering whether he should tell Lotta at the end.

So it was a keikaku.
How old is Nino?
She got knocked up.
Nino is 25. I guessed that he was 10 years older than Jean.
Grown ass man in high school. 21 Jump Street.

Well, I got some parts right from what I thought last episode. This is a great episode though.
I got the part where the king knew Jean is related to him. Got the part where the ship wreck was faked, the identity change, and how they were really killed in the accident. I basically only didn't think how the guard and Schnee didn't end up marrying and having Jean. Didn't realize they'd go seperate ways and Schnee would marry a commoner from the district.
This episode makes me feel bad for both Jean and Nino. For Jean, he baiscally didn't know half of what was going on around him, how he's techincally royalty, and that Nino was basically watching him his whole life. For Nino, his dad definitely. Jean mentioned Nino cheered him up when his parents died, but Nino's dad also died there so he probably didn't mention that at all.
People are mentioning how Abend could be Grossular. Definitely a possibility, they didnt show Abend's face at all so maybe they were trying to hide something about him. We might find out where Abend ended up later though.
This series is freaking amazing.

Oh wait I'm an asian too xD

Awwww, Nino is always protecting them both I guess
Though you can say Nino is not really your "friend" from the very first :(

So the King knew for the entire time

Well now just have to find out why Abend or Grossular don't like Jean that much

I LOVED THIS EPISODE !!!

About their ages, let's see

Jean and Nino been friends for 15 years [known fact] and they met in high school. Nino is 25 when Jean started high school which is usually 14 years old so Nino is 11 years older than Jean. Lotta looked 3 when Jean was 14 so I'm guessing Jean is 11 years older than Lotta. (Nino)'s age fast forward to present is 25 + 15 = 40 - 11 = (Jean) 29 - 11 = (Lotta) 18

I'd say Lotta 18, Jean 29, Nino 40
