Besides that, Isuna Hasekura has explicitly stated that there won't be a third season. The likelihood of a honest, direct sequel with the same staff is virtually zero, so unless one of us is secretly a billionaire S&W fanatic... |

The status of the source doesn't guarantee whether or not further adaptations are possible. |

Apart from major franchises, coming back from the 'dead' seems rare except with particular circumstances: - iirc Ushio to Tora got its anime about the same time it had a big anniversary volume set release, and peeps at MAPPA may have pushed for it as well? FMP presumably had sustained interest with spinoff novels/manga? There was buzz enough to bring Sigma into Super Robot Wars - for example, which is unusual as it traditionally sticks to recent anime, the real franchisers, and ancient obscure oldies. I'd assume that Mushishi had some broad success given it made it to live-action, and people were saying the director/producer/studio? had a big hand in keeping it going. LoGH had that stage play going, Tanaka's presumably a biggish deal, and Arslan may have been on the rise with Arakawa's manga around the same time. tl;dr: source material's status isn't the end-all, but there's obviously got to be 'something' going on for an anime to come about. What was strange is actually how long its sequel took to come, not that it got a sequel. With that kind of success one would have expected a second season much sooner. I simply fail to see what could draw anyone back to the S&W franchise when there's nothing to advertise (be it the novels or some related merchandise) and the anime itself didn't bring in much money. It's not the same as adapting an old successful manga, a work with an ongoing source to advertise, a work that's highly merchandisable, or a work that sells loads of BDs. Edit: Looking at the numbers for the Kino's Journey BDs, it sold roughly 3k, so it would be fair to assume the old anime increased the novel sales by a noteworthy amount if they're willing to advertise it even more with another animation. That is just an assumption though. @SuperRed All of the FMP anime broke 10k in sales, and both the sequel and spinoff by Kyoani did better than the first season by Gonzo. It's plausible that FMP IV could be a BD-sales focused production. |
