(The original English-language book uses the spelling 'Sara', of which the pronunciation got approximated to セーラ [seera] in Japanese.)  To demonstrate with a more well-known example, we use 'Dragon Ball Super', not 'Dragon Ball Chou'. Even though the kanji for 'chou' (Japanese for 'super') is used there, the furigana tell us it's supposed to be pronounced 'suupaa' (super). I had previously worked with a mod to change over some otome games adaptations from shoujo->josei b/c they actually had josei written on the game's official site and I linked all the sources. I'd love to see these two changed over too but we need concrete source that says they are josei. This is a similar issue with toy franchises, if the franchise itself doesn't say it is marketing towards a 'shounen' or 'shoujo' demographic, then the anime adaptation doesn't get one as a label even when you can easily assume its for boys or for girls (eg. Aikatsu has several statements by the parent company they are for shoujos. While Battle Spirits Brave there is none such similar statement for shounens.) MAL likes to avoid assumptions and list factual information. For Amnesia, are those Drama CDs marketed towards a josei demographic as listed by the Drama CD's release company? Even though the main anime is josei, separate releases adapting separate stuff have to follow their direct adaptation. This is why one of the Attack on Titan OVA's has a shoujo tag, because it adapted a spinoff manga which ran in a shoujo magazine even though the main anime and main manga are shounen. If no target demographic can be found for the Drama CD, then even its shoujo tag should be removed. As for your linked reddit thread. Anything adapted from a ZERO-SUM magazine is a case-by-case issue which has already been dealt with previously by mods. The magazine is self classified as a shoujo and josei magazine so everything in it is a mix. Mods went through and gave shoujo or josei tags to what they felt best represented the anime along with taking consideration of the manga's tags on the manga DB as well as the manga tags on Manga-Updates. If there is a particular title you want to have its demographic changed, you have to explain why since the magazine itself doesn't label what's what. It's all quite flexible. I agree with Karneval (remove shoujo and put josei) and Karneval Specials (add josei) b/c the main anime is josei as well as the manga's DB label of this ZERO-SUM being josei. Same with Loveless Specials. Also, "Karneval Specials" should be renamed into "Karneval (TV) Specials". Nihon Animator Mihonichi is predominately an original anime so it does not get a demographic tag. Choujuu Densetsu Gestalt, Saiyuuki Gaiden, Saiyuuki Gaiden: Tokubetsu-hen - Kouga no Shou adapt manga that ran in G Fantasy which is a mixed manga magazine (this is the magazine that help birth the creation of ZERO-SUM aimed at females b/c they were just juggling to many series of all sorts of types. There was also some petty corporate shitfest going on where other magazines got tussled, it was known as the 2001 Enix Oie Soudou and people went to court for it), and its anime should have their target demographics removed altogether. For Saiunkoku Monogatari and its second season, this is based on a light novel so there's that light novel issue I mentioned before. It's rare but if you can find a source from the publisher that they are a josei magazine or imprint, then by all means. Genji Monogatari Sennenki is based on a historical novel so it's shouldn't get the josei tag. Same issue with Genji Monogatari. For the Sekaiichi Hatsukoi franchise, if the manga its based on ran in several magazines, the most recent magazine is used to determine target audience tags. Currently, the series runs in Emerald, if you can find on Emerald's website their mission statement of targeting "josei" then we are good. Or even on Kadokawa's main website that Emerald is their "josei" line. B/c all I see so far is that Emerald is their "Comic & Fantasy" magazine. This is probably why MAL for both the anime and the manga have given it no target demographic tag at all. Kasei Yakyoku's manga ran in Monthly May, I'm having trouble finding what demographic it was targeted to b/c the parent publisher is predominately shounen publisher, they did have a couple josei lines but those are clearly labeled. Monthly May is so old I'm having trouble finding info especially since the name brings up May issues of random manga magazines. If no info can be found, then the anime shouldn't have any demographic tag. |
