Synopsis

In a thoughtless blunder, God accidentally strikes down Touya Mochizuki with a stray bolt of lightning! As an apology, God offers him one wish and the chance to live again in a magical fantasy world. Touya happily accepts the offer and, for his one wish, asks only to keep his smartphone with him as he begins his journey into this mysterious world.

Starting over in this new world, Touya finds it is filled with magic—which he has an affinity for—and cute girls vying for his attention. These girls—the twins Linze and Elze Silhoueska, Yumina Urnea Belfast, Leen, and Yae Kokonoe—provide Touya with no end of romantic frustrations, but also companionship as he discovers the secrets of this new world.

Mixed Feelings

I think the keynote of this show is “another day, another chick”. There is hardly any episode where our “hero” (and I use this term loosely mind You) find another girl to help or just add to his harem.

But let’s rewind a bit.
The story of “Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni” aka “In Another World With My Smartphone” follows another teenager that got killed and reincarnated in a magical world. The semi original twist is that he didn’t get killed by truck-kun but by God’s mistake, not gonna lie that part made me chuckle. As an apology the God sent him to a new world, ... gave him a boost in stats, skills and even allowed him to keep his… smartphone. Yes… out of everything he could have asked for, our protagonist wanted to keep his phone. Surprisingly Toya (that’s the name of the “hero”) is denser than a neutron star mostly when it comes to relationship with women (I know shocking, an isekai protagonist who can’t read the room, no one saw that coming) and can come up with rather clever, even if obvious after the first few manifestations of his powers, ways to make it useful. Unfortunately that’s all when it comes to semi-original things this show has for it. The rest is just standard isekai, “I want a harem” wish fulfilment for the viewers “enjoyment”.

When it comes to structure Toya reminded me a bit of Yuusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho (don’t kill me, let me explain) in a way that most of the time he is a passive protagonist that lets things happen without a clear goal, but then he gets one he becomes an active. With the difference that Yuusuke is actually an interesting character and Toya is just a boring OP avatar for the viewers.

The writing is really simple, full of clichés but once in a while it deviates from the standard tropes just enough to let You watch without too much eye rolling. Except when it comes to the harem parts. If You watched enough harem isekai shows You can feel like an oracle with just how much of the show You can predict.

The supporting cast isn’t much better than Toya. I would describe them but it would be pointless, all of them are just obsessed with the hero, have no goals of their own (except getting married to the protagonist) and the main difference is just their cup size. To be fair the only girl that is tolerable is Yumina, but that's only because she’s not a passive doll… yeah… the bar is so low that You can trip on it in hell, but I’ll take it.

Despite all that there is something to be said about the enjoyment factor. Yes, the writing sucks most of the time. Yes, the protagonist is forgettable. Yes, the supporting cast is CTRL+C, CTRL+V from another harem show. Yet… I enjoyed watching it. Except for the last 2 episodes, those are so cliché that hurt.
For some reason I can’t completely grasp, the show got me hooked. No, I didn't care about what happened to the protagonist and his crew. Yes, I got invested in a love side plot of characters who have less that 20 minutes in total of screen time more than anything that concerns the harem plot and still I watched this show.

This is the definition of a generic anime. It's like eating junk food for a full meal, you'll finish it, but you won't feel satisfied with it. The main hero is the generic dense nice guy who has girls falling in love with him for no reason other than he has a pulse. He has OP abilities. But the biggest issue to me is he has no goals, and every time he gets one, it's resolved in minutes, and usually it's because someone else did it for him. He never actually works for a single thing he gets, despite how much he gets. It's fun ...
