I don't really mind either way so long as the story interests me. I've watched some shows with a female main character but more shows with main male character because thats just how it is.

I way prefer male leads. Not too many good characters come from the female characters, they're all so generic. The male leads have some amazing characters though, as you can see by my favourite characters list.

It depends. I like a main character that is entertaining and relatable. I am male, but many of my favorite leads are female ex. Kitajima Maya (Glass Mask), Erin (Kemono no Souja), Hinamori Amu (Shugo Chara). However, I also enjoy watching male leads as well ex. Okabe Rintaro (Steins;Gate), Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass), Jintan (Anohana). I guess I like well written characters rather than focusing on gender.

Personally I would love more nonbinary and gender fluid anime leads, but in that gender binary I prefer female more than male. Nothing against male leads, but I can't relate as much as I can with female leads.

I would love to see more lgbtq relationships in mainstream anime that aren't fetishized too. That would be pretty dope.

Female. It's kind of funny however when I can tell that someone is a male from just reading their replies thou. I like female leads because there simply not enough of them. Especially in more action anime. I had to think a little before I came up with an anime that I personally enjoy with a female lead. That being Promised Neverland.

Anime with male leads, and anime with female leads, both are appealing in their own way. But I would say I prefer male leads since I'm a male myself, and naturally I would mostly relate more to a male lead than a female lead.

Their gender doesn't matter if they are well developed. I have both male and female characters in my favorites. But I still love male leads a little bit more. Usually they are more badass and more intelligent, plus they look really handsome.

I genuinely don't care, they just need to be well-written. If you understand a character's motivation then you can relate to them.

I feel the same way. I relate to characters and not gender and so on.
In Japan, target audiences are very gendered, so the protagonists of shounen and other certain genres are often male so the target audience can relate more, so it's not like it totally doesn't matter at all, but I often relate most to people who are not my gender and look completely different from myself.

Yeah, just seeing a female lead tends to make me happy, especially if it's not a shoujo series, because it's getting pretty difficult these days to find well-written female characters in male-targeted shows, much less protagonists.

That said, it doesn't mean I automatically PREFER female leads. I like GOOD leads. I like the female characters who do exist being written like people instead of cardboard waifu bait. Give me those things and I'm happy.

Honestly, it doesn't really make a big difference to me. If you look at my list you'll see I've watched a very large amount of anime with male leads and a very large amount with female leads. It just comes down to the series itself and the character I am following. If a character is good I am going to enjoy that series whether they are a guy or gal. Likewise, if a character sucks I'm probably going to dislike it whether it's a guy or gal. I guess since I watch a lot of shounen if I had to pick I prefer Male leads but honestly I'm just open to a female lead in those as well, I mean did you see Promised Neverland? Emma was a great lead.

It depends, quite honestly, but leaning more towards females.

Personally, I prefer for an idol Anime to be an all-female cast rather than male. For example, I loved 22/7 and the leads are females. Unintentionally that I noticed, most of the series that I've been following this year have been female with exceptionally of few.

Winter season, I was following "Koisuru Asteroid", "22/7" and "Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!" which had little to no males in the series.

Spring season, "Kami no Tou", "Nami yo Kiitekure", "Arte", "Gal to Kyouryuu" and "Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta..." which only one show has a male lead and it was an okay series. "My Next Life As a Villainess" was the clear winner of the past season on the ones that I watched because Catarina Claes is awesome. She's, so far, my personal favorite lead for this year.

Also, my personal favorite Anime ever is "Cardcaptor Sakura" which is female lead.

So there...

Well I can appreciate any story with a fair amount of thought put into, but I do have a preference for femininity among the character traits that I enjoy more, which happens to be more of a quality of female characters. So I like male characters with traditionally feminine traits (Like Satล Mafuyu, Natsume Takashi, and to a lesser extent Rei Kiriyama) and female characters more than their masculine counterparts. I'm not talking about appearance.

I prefer both. Although this question don't even make sense. Because it's depend on the anime. From example most of the shounen anime have male main character and most of the moe or shoujo anime have female main character... So again it's depends on the genre....

female leads honestly. But that may be because I'm better at picking those that interest me for those so I usually don't get disappointed by books/anime/manga with female characters that I pick, dunno.

That's a tough one. On one hand, I'd like to think I can relate to both equally, on the other, I just know it's way easier for me to relate to girls.
I don't relate to most qualities you'd think of as traditionally male. I usually relate way more to girls' sensibilities and trains of thought, even though I'm very much a straight male.
So the way that this translates to my favorite media is pretty interesting because most of it is unconscious and I don't even realize till later. Around half of my anime/manga favorites either feature female leads or are written by women, my favorite video game is NieR:Automata (2 out of 3 female leads), my favorite live-action movie is Bumblebee (female lead), my favorite anime movie is Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (female lead), I listen to a lot of artists and bands that feature girly sounds/vocals/lyrics (like Kero Kero Bonito and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu), etc.
That's not to say I think of myself as girly or rarely relate to male characters or characteristics. Heck, I'd say it's a 70%-30% situation in media and an even smaller gap in real life. It's just that I gravitate quite a bit more towards female, as well as less masculine male characters (as evident from my favorites) and people in general.

Oh and when it comes to little stories and characters I make in my head daily for my own amusement while daydreaming or listening to music, the number of male and female protagonists is usually equal, so that's an area where it doesn't reflect the same way. So if I was a creator, I'd probably have an equal amount of characters from both genders.

saying you prefer female leads because generally male leads are worse characters is a very broad statement when 90% of series have a male lead
First why would that matter and secondly you're extremely wrong with your statement. I'm not entirely sure but the ratio shoule be closer to 1/3 female lead series, even this sasuge fest season has 5/26 female lead series from the debuting line up. Could you find a single season with 90% male leads? the more recent the better.

Depends. More often than not I prefer male leads, since the genres I like often use male leads as their protagonists. Although there are a few female leads I like, not especially love like some other characters but I like them. There are a few female leads that are amazing tho. The female protagonists I loved so far the most are Youko (12 Kingdoms), Chang ge (Song of the long march), Yona (Akatsuki no Yona) and Balsa (Guardian of the Spirit). Also maybe Emma (Promised Neverland) or Chise (The Ancient Magus Bride) and a few others. In others like Madoka, I think Madoka herself is pretty fine, but I like the others more. Same for Mase in Abyss or School Life for example.

Often female leads in other anime are either CGDCT or these series are romances. And it's absolutely fine and I really them too, but I'm not always in the mood for it. The girls in the typical CGDCTs or your typical shoujo romance-lead are fine, but I won't say they are my favorite characters at all. Often they are not really interesting imo.

I prefer well-written leads. It's as simple as that.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I find myself strongly leaning towards a preference for male leads despite being female myself.

Part of it is that female leads tend to occupy genres I don't enjoy or have them attached to them even in genres I do like (like bringing romance into adventure and so on).
I'm also kinda sensitive to high-pitched sounds and amongst Japanese voice actresses, that kind of sound is not exactly uncommon.
Also, it's kinda hard to relate to many of the female characters because there's just no overlap; I can't relate to their worries or interests at all. They usually feel like "how a guy thinks girls probably act" and not like actual girls, so that's just uncomfortable and weird.
And in the rare case that it's done well, I'm just kinda bored because...that's already my life, isn't fiction supposed to be an escape from that?

Of course there are exceptions to that (like Psycho-Pass, Akatsuki no Yona, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, Nana, Tokyo Magnitude, InuYasha, etc.) where I actually did enjoy the female leads, but way more commonly I'm annoyed or weirded out by them.

That said, it's not like I conciously avoid one or the other, if the story interests me I check it out, regardless of the gender of the protagonist :)

generally i dont mind, of the character is well written. but seeing how the anime industry has been up untill now, i would say a male protagonist... because, i am a dude. i do like female MC as well ( i loved kaguya sama, fate zero and psycho pass(S1)) but mostly female MCs are portrayed as silly, cutie, pretty girls. i am not a fan of that. there are very few badass or smart feamle MCs. also i cannot relate to reverse POV in romance. yeah, it is a good change in course every once in a while but thats it..

It really depends. In Shonen, most series have male leads. The same goes for action or sci-fi. I still don't mind a female lead, as I still thought Emma in The Promised Neverland was good. I still haven't delved much into Shojo or Slice of Life so I can't say.

I tend not to think about the gender of the lead too much when considering what I watch, in fact the only things I consider is how long the show is, if it's compete, and what genres it fits into. I would think that if anything the gender of the writer reveals far more than the gender of the main character. Female writers tend to give their female characters a bit more development and natural feeling dialogue, which is a big reason why I think I love so many of FMA:B's female characters so much. Not to say men don't of course but it would be far more likely that a man would write less natural dialogue for a woman than another woman would.
