I'll probs watch both when i get the time (im too busy atm, maybe in summer :P)

i forgot to say this before, if you plan to watch them later, and dont want to spoil your fun, dont watch anymore about delta
in this 2 episodes you already saw many spoilers (just dont know yet that are spoilers), and macross franchise inserts frequently references to the events of previous series, from normal life to warfale
like, just an example: you know this woman in this photo? she was my granny, she had a relationship with him but before that he was with this other girl...

I know what you mean, but ive been told that other than the ocasional references, the plot is done so that anyone can get into it (i dont even think theres really any recurring characters from previous installments, maybe just 1 or 2 max) so i dont think itll be a problem. If at some point I start seeing some crazy amounts of spoilers from other parts of the series, i'll obvs stop, but I don't think it's gonna go that way, since from what i gather, each macross anime is almost done to cater to viewers of the time it was released, so it makes sense that most stuff will try to be newcomer friendly

Plus i tend to forget with time quite a few of the smaller details in anime, simply cuz I watch a lot and read a lot of manga, so I really don't think in this case its gonna affect my enjoyment. Also, if i enjoy this until the end, it means there's a high possibility i'll enjoy all other entries in the franchise haha

I know. It's sorta like starting UC gundam by watching 08th MS Team or War in the pocket instead of 0079. Its not the most ideal thing, cuz u might miss a couple of references here and there, but overall its perfectly fine. If I had the time i would have watched sdf before delta (i didnt mainly cuz i wasn't expecting to like delta, which is kinda dumb, plus there would have been a lot to catch up on) but theres nothing that can be done about that now, and I'd rather watch delta now rather than add it to my incredibly extensive backlog xD

If it was completely necessary to watch other macross parts, I wouldn't have started it in the first place, but from the research I've previously done myself I've come to the conclusion its perfectly fine and newcomer friendly

one of the characters in delta is the grand daughter of two of the main cast in original macross, you can tell from her name
in macross F there was an episode when they did a movie over the story of macross zero, and another episode that had the same battle sequences (and conseguences) of an episode of original macross...
not to mention the fact that you already saw zeltran and human allies
that's what i mean

Yeeeaah, I liked ep 2 a lot.

Also, did that ship in the middle of the lake on Ragna look suspiciously like something from the Frontier fleet? I almost had a "ah, so there you landed" moment there about the end of Frontier, although I seriously doubt they would make this direct a sequel.

There are a lot of ships like that. ITs some variation of a macross class ship(not too much in technical side to know which). Its where the show gets its title "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross". If I remember correctly ships like that were used for colonization. Its basically series of ship models that started with the original one in SDF Macross.

Perhaps someone who's seen the intermediate series can answer this: why is Captain Ernest Johnson somewhere between the size of giant and miclone Zentradi? Are the other Zentradi that size now too? Did they start making mid-size-clones instead of micro-clones?

The wiki says "He is a mix between human and Zentradi," but a human and a Zentradi miclone should produce a human-sized hybrid. Or is this like how Hagrid was mid-size because he was supposed to have a human father and a giantess mother?

EDIT: Apparently there are a total of nine DVD/BD volumes, and the first has three episodes. So it's 2-cour, right...?

I dunno man but when "she" whips out her dick and smacks you across the face with it don't say I didn't warn ya

We see her in the op somehow naked. I doubt there was any hologram in this scene. And I am 100% sure they won't do that.

not sure but maybe this can help

in the SDF tv series, zeltran were perfectly human, no green skin, no giant brain, no pointy ears
the zeltran archivist Exsedol was pretty small and slim, but had eidetic memory
http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/macross/images/f/f5/Exsedol_Folmo-2_SDFM-1.png/revision/latest?cb=20150723003918
in the DYRL movie, archivists like Exsedol were mass produced with green skin and larger head/brain that explained their eidetic memory and other computer mind ability
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/exedolm7-s_3461.jpg
following macross series were made on the continuty of the tv, but with the character and mecha from the movie
to explain why Exsedol had the same appearence of the movie, was said that this change was made later in his life cause he feared to loose his intelligence when he micloned
(even if he changed his size more than once in the original tv show with no conseguences)

the only other miclone anomaly i know is Klan Klan, that drastically change her appearence when she change size, from a very curvy giant .... you know what, to a middle schooler flat as a table

about mixed zeltran/human men in macross, Guld from macross plus had a strong build, but still perfectly human, and his only "defect" was that he took pills to not loose control of his rage cause of the "warrior blood" in his veins

Never trust an opening.

Besides that her character description tries really hard to play up how mysterious she is and how nobody knows anything about her

If it happens, remember, you heard it here first.

Thanks, ZeroG :) I've found a page with a couple of size comparison charts at the bottom, according to which none have been under 8m / 26 ft before. There's a wide shot at 13:30 into Delta episode 2 that shows Kaname Buccaneer standing next to Captain Johnson, and even if she's six feet tall, he could only be 9 ft / 2.7m. I was wondering at first if he was some third race I didn't know about. :D

...animeeeeeeeeee~~~~~~~~~~~~

Speaking of Zentradi breeding... (spoilers for SDF Macross) I'm sure nothing can be said about SDF Macross that hasn't been said thousands of times before, but the way the show didn't internally acknowledge that obvious issue drove me mad :P

Still have not gotten over how my sensitive heart broke over the decision of the love triangle in the Macross F movies so hopefully a better choice will be made in this series though not sure who to support since it's early still and I don't see much of anything besides Freyja being moe but her singing is hitting the right cords to heal the wound left from Macross F movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDSyoDNZLMI That ending sure is good! Not a fan of the OP though. I'm interested in Mirage since she's a descendant at least from her last name but maybe something else will change with her character later on. Maybe it'll be like SDF where I couldn't side with either.

I’m digging more the ED song than the OP.

Nice seeing, they paid homage to SDF Macross with Freyja (in place of Lynn Minmay) in the hand of the VF/plane (if you pause it there and look at it, it’s clearly a VF-1 Valkyrie {which became the nickname for Variable Fighters inside the Macross universe}) with Hayate (representing Hikaru Ichijyo) as the pilot falling of the sky with the difference that Mirage Farina Jenius recued both and I also spoted an homage to Macross Plus replicating the Isamu hand plane in the sky…

That last audition/test to me was a foreshadowing that worst things are to come...

Not to mention that even without wars, there is already knowledge about species who need songs to communicate, so having a gifted singer(or team of them) also makes sense so you don't accidentally spark a war or something.

And then we have the fact that Delta Squadron seems to specifically be created for purpose of dealing with Var Syndrome, which requires music to be countered(and is started by music)

The audition of Freyja Wion went from Zero to Hero!
Why Mirage Farina Jenius so much hate to Hayate?....maybe (moskashite) the more you hate the more you love? cuz I don't see any spark at Freyja & Hayate together...

Love triangle, a staple for Macross franchise indeed. Mirage became the new Sheryl, Freyja became the new Ranka & Hayate is the new Alto. If this series follow the usual Macross route, then we already know which girl gonna win..

TBF, you really shouldn't watch SDF unless your sold on the series as a whole. Do You Remember Love is all you NEED for the original entry. Also, DYRL is the cannon version.

Mislead the name of the commander guy as Arab Molders : needless to say lots of spat out tea and laughs ensued.

That episode was pretty great to be honest: Freyja-chan and her borderline autistic obsession with becoming a Walkure is starting to grow on me, and her performance during the last test was quite charming indeed. I already had a good first impression of Hayate from episode 1 but the last scene with him literally riding the wind pretty much cemented his position as one my top picks MCs of the season.

Looks like the baddies are the same kind as our heroin: curious to see how this is all gonna play out in future episodes. However, I'm a bit worried about what appears to be a potential love triangle, as it seems it will involve a lot of tsunderism on Mirage's part. Not that I dislike her or anything (yet), but I don't feel I'm in a mood to deal with a female version of Rin Matsuoka atm.

Actually, technically DYRL is the movie made within the universe as referenced in Macross 7. it is not necessarily more canon or less canon than SDF.
SDF can drag on and has the "old anime syndrome", but its no different in that aspect from stuff like UC gundam shows.

Zombies are used here because they run out of ideas for aliens (already covered - giants, monsters and insectoids).

Well first it was about making alien space teenagers question their adolescence via hippie stuff.
Then it was used to fight space vampires with rock music.
Then it was used by robots withe electro-pop.
Then to communicate with zerg with 00's pop.
Now it is to fight zombie virus with idol genre.

Music genre changes according to the present day music industry trends in Japan.
The enemy changes according to the present day political issues.
But Macross since the very inception still remains about fighting something with music. That has never changed.

I know its a movie in universe, but I always considered it to be the 'cannon' telling of the events, unless I'm forgetting some tidbit that contradicts that and points to the TV show being cannon. I will admit that I have a bias towards DYRL cause unlike SDF, it aged like wine while SDF aged like milk.

All the dialogue is surprisingly funny.
Hayate as smartypants was lol. Mirage gets provoked. Too angry & violent a tsun tho, don't like that type. Mikumo seems awesome tho, need more screentime even if she's not in the triangle.
Frejya pulled a Shaft tilt! "Gee whiz, that's a deculture and a half!" Her va & animation are so lively funny.
So Windermean have a closed hostile country. Possible romeo juliet themes.
Lord Wind has a full rack of meganes on display wow. And pipe organ, so classy.
World building is quite interesting, good but not too detailed bg, taking time to show seal cats, weird phone, culture etc.
Hayate sounds like an ass w/o being annoying. Nope she didn't fail.
Creepy, pretty gory even tho it's a fake test.
OP ok, mech dancing's great. ED nice song, liking the visuals, they toon filtered live action shots, and tracked cg elements.

Seen the Macross Elysian many times before, but which series did it first appear?
