The question is asking why do people give high scores to things they didn't really like, not why people give high scores to Anime they do like...

Back to the original topic:
I don't know, but I go by MAL's standards for the most part, unless I'm rating a short.

IDK if I give high scores.

I give so-so anime a score of 5 and 6.

What if people really just enjoy everything they watch? I certainly don't, but not everyone has as high standards as someone like me, and even so there are people with like half my average score.

It's probably because people rate it the way a lot of schools do scoring for grades. Where 60 and below is just varying degrees of bad, 70 is average, 80 is good, 90 is very good, 100 is great, etc.

At least it seems that way to me.
That makes absolutely no sense though. School grades are percentages; they have nothing to do with the 10 point scale.

i can't remember the last time anything but my cumulative grade was a percentage...

homework, tests, exams were points, not percentages. 5/5. 18/20. 90/110. 200/250. 76/76. 80/90. etc etc etc.

...so yeah it actually does make a lot of sense and does have to do with a point scale.

They were probably still entertained by it, as in despite thinking the anime is terrible, they never got bored with it. I usually give boring anime a low score.

Cause people are random.

I don't really care though as long as they're consistent within their rating system. they're why every score on MAL is skewed about 1 point higher than it should be. So average rating of 5.x means bad, 6.x means average 7.x means fine 8-8.5 means good, 8.5-9 means great. Not really hard to see it for what it is even with the ratings of many users being irrationally high.
I probably regret this post by now.

I'd like to say I'm pretty optimistic when it comes to most things. Guess I always look for the best in shows, and when the show is mediocre I try to find something good that came with the show.

Just because something is "Very Good" doesn't mean it's ideal or that it doesn't have flaws. There are still two ranks above it.

The OreImo specials were worse. As a producer, you can't get any lower than ignoring the source material and changing the ending of something, committing fanrape in the process.

Okay here's how I rate things: From 10-6 you're good, while at 5 your basically just hanging in there but you're standing on thin ice. Now if you're 4-1 well you're pretty f*****. -_-

I don't know about you guys, but I think I'm being pretty lenient here right?

Some people think rating high = giving out mostly 7's and up.

I think that its possible that at least a good number of these so called "high raters" might just be good at picking out anime they believe they'll enjoy and it turns out well for them. I think you also have to take into consideration that people often drop , or at least put on hold, shows they feel are 4 or below..

For me 7 = good and 8 = very good, if there are many 7+ ratings in my list, it's probably because of how I pick.anime to watch and not how I define the numbers I use.

Personally, if I enjoyed something while watching it, I'll give it a 10. If I would tell someone else to watch it, I'll give it a 10.

I don't often give things under a 10 unless I really did not enjoy it.

So yeah I don't rate things properly :^)

I know that's what my friends tell/criticize me for also. XD

Not to mention despite how I bash the crap outta Mahouka I'll probably end up giving it a 7/10 if the Yokohama Arc goes well (despite the previous disappointments from the previous arcs), If not then a 6/10.

I always thought 7ish was average or very slightly above average. Maybe it's because 70% is a C in school or I think a girl that's a 7/10 is average looking. 5/10 might be in the middle but that's failing in school and would be a pretty ugly person

You could suppose that many would rather more accurately be able to judge shitty anime than good anime. 1-6 does offer a larger degree of shit scaling than a 1-4 would.

It looks like some people are under the impression that there are more levels of "bad" than "good." I'm not going to argue with this statement, but I do want to point out that that regardless of whether you rated something a 1 or a 4 (both of which are considered "bad" by the typical MAL user), you probably regretted watching it. Why would you want to make a clear distinction between something that's merely bad and something that's utterly terrible if you're never going to watch them again anyway?

I personally like having more room to distinguish various levels of "good" so I can easily differentiate what I merely liked, what I thought were the best of the best, and everything in between. For me, anything 5 or above is watchable, so I have 6 values to work with. Therefore, I only have 4 values to assign to anime I dislike, but then again, I'm not picky about scoring things that I consider bad since I'm never going to revisit them.

Just drop off your mindset of 10 (actually 9) points gradation.

What you need to look is actually the distribution pattern of those score, the closer it is to normal distribution pattern means that person is still gives score relatively impartial.
The most important things in life is the people that you care about

Then you need to watch more anime and broaden your score range to increase the η scale of the curve, assuming that β in the function act as your taste. And yes, I don't know what I am talking about.

If I dont like anime I rate it 1-4
If it is average I rate it 5
If I like it I rate it 6-10
Thats it. 7 rating would mean it was quite good in my case.

In university 70% average means that you're in honor student, so I don't understand why marks in the 70% are frowned as bad scores.
