Which generation of anime fans do you belong to and how did you first become aware (interested) in anime? Are there any shows that you consider fundamental to your peers? How do you communicate with older or younger (if any) viewers?

Early 2000's was my introduction to anime. DBZ and Sailor Moon on the VHS tapes are my earliest recollections. Started diving deeper due to Toonami and when Naruto first aired.

I didn't start watching until around 2017/2018. Most people around me didn't enjoy the medium because it's a small town and all anyone does is hunt. Eventually I met someone who did and they got me hooked.
How can you keep moving forward if you keep regretting the past?

My very first show were 90's. Akira to be exact. Back then we only had 4 channels in the UK, and it was likely 1996 while still at school, 16 at the time so not too bad, but we overtook the VC room at lunch time (as no one uses at lunch) and one of our friends had brought in a VCR of Akira and said look what ive found. We got busted a quater of the way through. But the visuals, the sounds. Comapred to anything id every experienced. Hooked ever since.

Late 80's through the 90's to 2k.

Ranma 1/2, AKIRA, Fist of the North Star, Devil Hunter Yohko, The Magnificent World of El-Hazard, Project A-KO, The Guyver....

OVA's and movies were my thing.

Dragonball Z was there, but I just liked the Cell Saga.

Pokemon wasn't my thing, but the manga was good.

90s as I was born in early 90s and it was on TV as "kids cartoons", I grew up watching both 80s and 90s and even earlier anime, then early 00s anime later on too, I only "discovered" anime in 2008/09 through Naruto.
Sailor Moon wasn't a thing in my region and I doubt anyone knew about it at the time.

I've been watching anime since the early 2000's.

But I am practically identify myself as a 2010's generation anime watcher because that is the time that I began to watch more heavily and I also began to not watch live actions and western cartoons.

I guess technically I belong to the 00's? I was born in '97 and I remember as a very young child seeing Dragonball with my brother in the morning on the weekends, it was one of my favorite things. Then growing up I saw Doraemon, Ninja Hattori, Kochikame, Captain Tsubasa, Fushigi Yuugi, Doremi, Mermaid Melody and others Im definitely forgetting though at the time I just thought they were cartoons, as everyone else did. The first anime I actually watched knowing it was an anime was Naruto when I was a teen and since then i've been here :)

Mmm as for fundamental shows... I guess usually what everyone considers the beginner animes, not only theyre still a rather solid starting point but a good portion of them hold up today, some more than others but thats just to be expected

Im not sure what you mean with communicate though, it it like what type of anime we'd talk about?

It was the tail end of the 90s era, with battle shonen rising in popularity. I watched Sailor Moon, Mobile Suit Gundam, DBZ, Pokemon, Ranma 1/2, and many others.

There was a certain feeling that would be impossible to recreate: getting home from school and tuning in to some of these animes that were airing on TV.

80's/90's here.

SDF MACROSS/ROBOTECH was the Gateway for me, at first, during it's original CATV Broadcast run in the mid-80's,
- when i was around four or five years of age - and again around the very-late-80's/very-early-90's,
when a cousin gave me a transformable model from ROBOTECH...

and, finally, come the mid-90's, - and me in my early/middle-teen years - i came aware of ROBOTECH once more,
and of SDF MACROSS, - it's primary Anime source material -
thanks to more readily-available import Anime Mecha Model Kits
and discovery of VIZ COMMUNICATIONS' "ANIMERICA" Anime Magazine...

I don't really feel in place or with a sense of belonging to any of the individual eras, truth be told, because I started watching only in 2016 (despite already being in 20s), but it isn't like I started with all or even mainly 2016 and other recent year series. The majority I watched then were probably from the 2000s. More specifically I started in September of 2016 and my first six series (the amount I watched during the remainder of that year) were, respectively, from 2004, 2011, 2005, 2000, 1996, and 2004 again.

And I didn't start watching actual current seasonals (as in, while they were still on-air) until 2020.

Early 10s is when I watched my childhood shows like Beyblade and where anime was first introduced to me, between 10s and 20s is where I sporadically watched anime like Kaichou wa Maid-Sama! and Toradora, 20s is where I probably became a casual anime fan and 2023 is when I started animanga as a serious hobby.

I'm gonna confuse myself so I'll just say 20s for simplicity sake.

I grew in Naruto era but never considered myself as anime fans since i didnt knew Anime term beside naruto like seasonal, seiyuu, etc all of them i founded after high school graduated instead but not also in Isekai and CGDCT phase since SAO never be mentioned as Isekai when it released even until 2016 where konosuba aired at the time. More likely i grew in 2010s early before isekai era in 2016 when romance era on the peak like Steins gate, Angel beats, Anohana, Guilty Crown, Tasogare otome x amnesia, SNAFU, Golden Time, SKNU, Plastic memory, etc

I think my introduction to anime was pretty natural, and didn't even know it was popular until I started seeing it everywhere after I began watching it. I got into it in the summer of 2020, the year Avatar the Last Airbender finally got put on Netflix I think, and I was binging it because I finally got to watch it all the way through after only being able to see episodes here and there throughout my childhood. I watched the whole thing like 3 or 4 times back to back, and I was really getting bored of it after the final time, so I wanted something else to watch. Started scrolling through Netflix looking for cartoons and saw Naruto, and the rest is history.

I watched some as a kid of course, such as Bakugan, Beyblade, parts of Pokemon, and parts of DBZ which my uncle owned, but I didn't know what anime was at the time and I just saw them as regular cartoons. I don't see anything as fundamental to the anime or manga experience as a whole as long as you at least try something before saying you dislike it. And outside of MAL I don't really talk to other anime fans. The closest would be on Twitter (X), but I mostly just lurk everywhere.

I did not start watching until the late 2000s, but I did not see Bleach until 3 years of watching anime, my One Piece was dubbed by 4K!DS and was mocked as "not anime" and Naruto (and Black Butler) were considered a horrible fanbase to the point where Naruto fan was something of an insult. Most of the stuff I saw was mecha, Dragon Ball and pretty much the entire Phase I and II Toonami lineup. So I identify more with the 1990s crowd.

Technically, I did watch some anime on TV in the 2000s, but I don't count that since I didn't even know what anime was at the time. I first became an anime fan in the 2010s. 2015, specifically. It was all thanks to Akinator, strangely enough. From there, I just went deeper down the rabbit hole...

I guess I technically belong to the 90s, but I never really considered myself an "anime" fan back then. Yugioh, DBZ, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho etc. they were all just shows on Cartoon Network for me. I didn't even watch Bleach and Naruto until around 4-5 years ago. Also, think the first anime I even watched with a Japanese dub was Attack on Titan.

End of '80 I didn't know the difference between animes and cartoons. I used to watch kids tv shows they were heavily edited in characters names, translation, but culture as well and censored contents. They are all those in my "on hold" list. The most memorable are:
Fist of the North Star, Fisherman Sanpei, Tiger Mask, Ronin Warriors, Saint Seiya, City Hunter, Maison Ikkoku, Ginga Tetsudou 999.
Ohayo! Spank, Love Me My Knight, The Rose of Versailles, Cat's Eye, Kimagure Orange Road, Captain Tsubasa, Attacker You!, Creamy Mami, Little Pollon, Candy Candy, Majokko Megu-chan, Dragon Ball, Sanjuushi, Fushigi no umi no Nadia, Himitsu no Hanazono, Porianna Monogatari, Torappu ikka monogatari. Ranma 1/2. My bro is a little older than me and he was caught in the early '80 mecha storm, I had none of that.

A combination. My introduction to anime was through Americanized versions on syndicated television during the late 70s through the early 90s (Star Blazers, Battle of the Planets, Voltron, Robotech, Tranzor Z, DIC Sailor Moon, Pre-Z Dragon Ball). I started buying anime on VHS tapes during the mid-90s (Project A-ko, Bubblegum Crisis OVA, Slayers, Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, Magic Knight Rayearth, Nadia: Secret of Blue Water) & then dvds (Outlaw Star, Saber Marionette J, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Big O). Didn’t completely stop, but kinda lost interest in the late 2000s through early 2010s. Then around 2017, started streaming which enabled me to explore genres I didn’t pay much attention to in the past. Currently watching more anime than at any point prior. “What a long strange trip it’s been” ๐Ÿ˜Ž

The early-to-mid 2010s. Sorry, but nothing gets better than the dredges of Tumblr during the early years of Free! Iwatobi Swim Club. And when Yuri!!! On Ice aired? Shit was wild, a time to be alive. Plus, the early/mid 2010s still kept a lot of anime from the 2000s alive: not yet forgotten or considered old.

@Suzuruzu I would imagine it is in production hell due to MAPPA's workload. But this is a sequel to a cult show, so it’s unlikely they gave it up.

1. My age group is not included? Not that I had much access to anime as kid...
2. The ways anime came to my country makes it hard to place my "inauguration phase". Like my first was made in the 60s, but I watched it in the late 70s. My third which is my gateway anime was made in the early 80s and I watched it in the mid 80s. Then there was a big pause (since I disliked the only accessible stuff like Maya the Bee and Candy Candy). So next for me were the late 90s with rental VHS cassettes containing OVAs and movies from the 80s and the early 90s.

So I somehow exist outside of the whole anime generations thing?

I voted 90s because ahhh, coming from a small Eastern European country, they've only reached us in 00s, so in my childhood. HOWEVER.

after checking @Serafos list, I found two animes I was obsessed with between ages 4-7... Given I STILL remember them goes to show how much impact they had on me. Honestly, I nearly cried when once upon a time I accidentally learned Yume no Hoshi no Button Nose was anime as I was 150% obsessed with it in my super early childhood... AND NOW I'VE LEARNED Mitsubachi Maya no Bouken and TaoTao Ehonkan Sekai Doubutsu Banashi ARE TOO T_T

Many thanks, my man. Brightened my dull office day! Certainly will have to rewatch them as I remember literally nothing about them except how much I loved them and the character designs, haha.

So I am kinda in a weird spot. I was born in 2002 and started watching anime around 2008-2009ish watching the dub of the current at the time season of Pokémon which was Diamond and Pearl, but didn't really start watching more than that until the early 2010s with the dub of the Beyblade Metal Saga, reruns of Digimon Adventure 01 and 02 on Nicktoons, reruns of Yu-Gi-Oh! on nicktoons, new Yu-Gi-Oh! ZeXal episodes on Nicktoons but I didn't really actively start watching anime as anime until I was around 13 when I got into Dragon Ball. Once I finished DB I did watch some newer shows, but the bulk of what I watched was catching up on older shows that I missed out on like Yu Yu Hakusho, Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop etc. Ever since Crunchyroll stopped offering new episodes 1 week after release with ads, I kinda stopped watching newer shows since I prefer to stream legally unless there is absolutely no other option available and Crubchyroll has gobbled up like 90% of current anime release licenses. I'm basically a 2000s kid who mostly started getting seriously into anime in the 2010s but still mostly watched shows that are older than 2010. I'm a weird mess with everything lmao
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

Mix of 2010s and 2020s

Started watching through Youtube during the 2010s as a young child.
The anime I can vaguely remember watching were Kirby Right Back at ya, Pokemon, Sonic X, FSN 2006, Bakugan and I think a few episodes or clips of Azumanga Daioh? I don't remember anything else because of how young I was at the time.
I just thought they were cool cartoons and would watch episodes completely out of order because I thought they were just like american cartoons where you didn't have to care what episode you were watching.

Then I actually started to watch them how they were intended in 2019 or 2020. Starting with Initial D.

2010s. K-On and CGDCT in general in the beginning, new gen shonen era starting in mid-'10s...

It's kinda easy to communicate with the other generations, since the shows are likable by many.
