Which anime absolutely NEEDS a modern remake/reboot?

It seems like nowadays there's been more remakes and reboots of old, beloved shows than ever. There's a number of factors that have been contributing to this, namely how most new anime is forgotten as soon as the season ends, and sales of the show largely fall off as viewership inevitably declines over time.

It's hard to make a show that really sticks out and stands the test of time in order to be marketable into the future. Think about how many shows you've watched in the past few years. Most of them you'll probably never come back to or buy any merchandise for. That's just the nature of watching anime.

Some studios are experimenting by re-animating old, already-successful properties to potentially get around this. Some notable examples are Fruits Basket, Tokyo Mew Mew, Inuyasha (Yasuhime), RWBY, Shaman King, and now even Rurouni Kenshin just to name a few. The studio's hope is that the remakes will become just as beloved. Sometimes these reboots work greatly to the show's benefit like in the case of Fruits Basket, and other times it's just very unnecessary and we could have done without it.

Which show do you think really deserves a modern glow-up?

Doubt it would ever happen but I would love to see a remake of Karekano, especially since it feels like there have been so few good shoujo anime recently. Also because there are not enough anime that have the characters in an actual relationship before the end so I really want to see how it continues but will probably just end up reading the manga at some point.

A proper Gantz adaptation would be cool
Fushigi Yuugi remake would be a hit with today's crowd.
There's also Slayers and Rayearth.
Also also, Angel Beats and Berserk.

Some manga I love with subpar adaptations:

- Berserk because I don't even like the 1997 version
- Slam Dunk because it took the first 5 episodes to adapt what a modern anime would do in 1 + 1/3, and the dialogues aren't that intellectually high to justify the slowness
- Ashita no Joe because there's something wrong with the sound recording (maybe I have to find a better version)

Maybe Mineo Maya's Patalliro. I think that anime was unique enough that it'd require a reboot.

Tokyo Ghoul needs a remake. The anime was good for the first season but when compared to the manga, it could of been even better.

We need a Promised Neverland S2 re adaptation.

Claymore is a manga I’ve heard good things about but then the anime wasn’t that good I’ve heard.

We need a proper Berserk anime.

I would also love to see a Yu Yu Hakusho remake as I have yet to watch the original, I would love a more non-filler adaptation.

I would’ve added Spice and Wolf to this list a year ago, but we are getting a readaptation of that soon. Finally, inner peace…

Rave Master will always be my top answer. I'm going to keep putting that out there until the universe makes it happen. I never expected Shaman King of all things to be brought back, yet here we are. So I'm still holding out hope that this and other 2000's anime like Air Gear get another go.

Claymore would be good.
For an obscure pick I think Beet the Vandal Buster could make for a cool reboot.
Eyeshield 21 could be cool with updated animation.
Deadman Wonderland is just alright but I bet could do really good with certain anime fans.
Akame ga Kill does have a better manga than anime to some degree so why not reboot this one properly too.

I disagree with people who are saying gantz. The gantz manga is bad. Impressive art at times, but pretty much the worse story telling, characters and tone. The author constantly introduces and drops ideas like crazy plus the ending was a throw away one. So longer a gantz anime adaptation wouldn't be any better than what we already have, it would just be worse.

Also a good answer, it's almost bizarre to me that it hasn't gotten even a cheap just for money remake by now. The super old 1st anime is one of the toughest things for newcomers to the series.

I am sure that a Claymore remake would have been a hit, but...

Aside from threads on Internet such as this one, no one is really talking about it nowadays.

Still, who knows, maybe they make it one day.

I liked what i saw of the classic 97' anime, but i agree with everyone else, a high quality, HD Berserk remake would make everyone go nuts. Something like what they did for Bastard!!!. Extremely tragic that they wouldn't be able to adapt the whole story but even just a single few movies or seasons, it'd be fucking killer.

it's been 15 years since the last tv adaptation of claymore and i assure you, if they did announce a remake of claymore, that the buzz would most definitely be loud. netflix's recent fall nippon tv deal allowed them to acquire 13 titles, including: berserk, claymore, nana, death note, kimi ni todoke, a portion of 2011's hunter x hunter, hajime no ippo, and on. claymore has not been forgotten or lost. the manga ended 8 years ago after 13 years in running... in my opinion, it'd be one of the higher considerations were studios to pick any remake if they can handle it. i may be biased since both forms are among my favorites, but to each their own.

Full Moon wo Sagashite could use a remake. The original series is pretty great, but has some big flaws that weigh it down.

Also, I'm probably the only person on the planet who cares so much about this show, but I'd love to see Princess Nine get a modern remaster + continuation.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Candy Candy, although it is impossible due to copyright issues between mangaka and artist.

Since the mid-1990s, "Candy-Candy" has been the subject of controversy, as copyright tensions began between Igarashi and Mizuki.

It all started when Nippon Animation contacted Yumiko Igarashi in 1995 with the idea of releasing a remake. To implement this, the agreement that gave part of the copyright in Candy-Candy to Kodansha Publishing was canceled, which in turn automatically canceled the agreement that allowed Toei Animation to manage part of the copyright of Kodansha. In November 1995, Igarashi and Mizuki entered into a new copyright agreement for Candy Candy that required their sole consent to use Candy Candy for commercial purposes. The idea of a remake as a result, for a number of reasons, was never realized.

Then, beginning in August 1997, Mizuki began to notice that various merchandise bearing Candy's image began to enter the market, labeled as copyrighted by Igarashi alone. She sued Igarashi, accusing her of violating an agreement they made in 1995. Igarashi responded by stating that Mizuki did not own the copyright to Candy's visuals and could not even be considered the author of the manga.

In October 2001, the Supreme Court of Japan sided with Mizuki, ruling that she retained sole copyright only in the original novel she had written, while in the manga, she and Igarashi had a joint copyright that also covered any use of the visual image of Candy for commercial purposes. The lawsuit made history because it was the only case in Japanese justice where two people were given the same percentage of copyright on a product. Many legal professionals in Japan, however, have criticized the court's ruling, noting that Candy's painted image can legally be considered a standalone work, which prevents Mizuki from copyrighting the manga.

Because of this and other lawsuits, anime series and full-length anime have not been officially purchased in any country since 1998, and all their releases on media in Japan itself are still not licensed. Mizuki and Igarashi have publicly stated that they will give the green light for the anime to be released on DVD if they receive a request from Toei Animation.

Sad. I like it so much!

I know it's a joke Anime but I would honestly love to see something like "Agent AIKa" get a modern remake or even a reboot. I would only hope if it ever happened they would keep in mind to direct the Anime the same way it was directed back in 1997. If there is not some obnoxious gratuitous panty shot in a scene every 15 seconds then it just wouldn't be the same...

Agreed on Gantz. The movie was pretty cool but adapting an arc halfway through the manga is weird. I feel like Gantz is highly marketable in this market with how chaotic it is.

Shin Angyo Onshi, all we ever got was a movie from 2004 by a shitty no-name studio which didn't do the original work any justice by messing up some parts.

Haven't read many manhwas cuz of their cliches, however I can imagine this being one of the best written manhwa and it'd definitely get appreciated today if a studio picked it up again

I'm still vouching for a Tsukihime remake by ufotable to happen at some point, cause the VN's great and I prefer this over most of the Fate stories out there. The original anime had a couple great tracks and a really good and haunting opening song but the rest of the show fell really flat and too dated.

it gets a ton of spin offs though, i ve heard that the canon sequel to Saint Seiya is currently in the works, so no remakes for some time
