Hachiman Hikigaya from Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. is the anime protagonist that I can relate the most to. His narcissistic personality, displeasure with the society he lives in, traumatic past and how he observes his surroundings in a very distorted way is very relatable to me. I had also felt the same as him in the past. Maybe, I feel the same as him even now. Though I'm not as pessimistic and anti social as him, I am similar to him in various aspects. This is why Hachiman is the most relatable anime protagonist to me.

Who is the most relatable anime protagonist to you? How is he/she relatable to you?

the big 3 of socially awkward anime characters. Subaru, Tomoko and Hachiman. Thankfully I've grown out of the behaviors that make each of them infamous but I can definitely look back on my past and relate to their struggles.

It comes as no surprise that Subaru and Hachiman are often targets of hate here on Mal because bullies just can't help themselves even when they're dealing with fictional characters. It also comes as no surprise that Tomoko, who is the worst of the three, the most self centered, arrogant and perverted one of the bunch, gets treated with kid gloves by the community at large. She's a girl after all, so she gets a pass.

For me easily Kaizaki from ReLife and Takagi from Bakuman. Although I can't relate to their dating life I find these characters have a strong connection with their friends and trying to find ways to help them out as much as possible.

Isn't the main opinion on this site that girl characters tend to suck more than guy characters(https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1816146&show=0)?

Why do you think this site has a strong preference for female characters? As the OP brought up in that thread they make up so little of the top 100.

Probably Saiki Kusuo, not the psychic power but he easily can judge and find disturbance in other person, the way he give sudden comment on what others did is relatable to me and he just wanted to have a quiet and normal live is relatable when i wanted to be all alone and not in a crowd.

the discrepancy is easily explained. For one, the masses have terrible taste. Secondly, shounentards are the most likely of all anime fandoms to resort to vote brigading. Third, the votes for female characters are spread across a much wider spectrum... IDK if it's possible to tally up favorite characters on a male to female basis but I'd be surprised if males come out on top.

Yuugo Hachiken from Gin no Saji.
He represents my helpful nature and how I don't like to accept something when I made my mistake. Also, the relationship he has with is father is identical to my own.

Kazusa Touma from White Album 2
Basically who I was when I was in school. Silent and isolated. I also had to experience what she had to go through.

Basara Nekki from Macross 7
Who I am now and the character that best represents my taste in anime and life in general. He does what he wants, and no one controls him. He may be an asshole, but he does it for a good cause.

For me it has to be Sakuta from Bunny-girl senpai. He's the most normal MC i've seen. I mean if I was he MC in that anime, that's exactly how I'd act.

Hachiman is a great MC, who I really like but I'm pretty sure none of us are that damn negative. But the way he thinks is sometimes relatable too, so he's a close second.

I thought voting brigading mostly happened in ratings for tv shows. Every character seems to have a reasonable number of favorites.
The third point seems fair.

I wouldn't really be that surprised. People tend to like protagonists a lot more than the other characters in the show, and most of those are also male. Not to mention, female-dominated casts often are genres people don't rate too highly like CGDCT and harems. I also see more people generally having more males in their favorites then females on average. You also have the fact, that this site is male and people tend to relate to their own gender more.

Tsukimi Kurashita from Kuragehime. She fights the same problems I had couple of years ago and sees the world the same why as I did. She even reacts on situations as I used to back then. I just want to give that girl a hug and tell her that she is strong enough to encounter her fears.

Momonga from overlord

For some reason, people around me thinks that I'm someone amazing, smart and such. For example, my classmates always say how they are jealous of me in studies whereas in reality I'm having difficulties with couple subjects

I'm always anxious because whenever I deny them thinking of me like that, they would just say "you dont need to try to hide it".I'm just slightly fed up with them tbh

Kurosawa from Onanie Master Kurosawa is relable to be in it's anti-social behavior and thinking process while talking to someone.
Hikigaya Hachiman is highly pragmatic like me and his views on youth and other shit is very much relatable to mine not to forget his left out character and reasons which keep him from making friends.

Same here. Shinji is a very relatable character. Sometimes I also avoid or run away from painful and displeasing events just like Shinji.

A lot of people absolutely hate him for being very cowardly but I believe that most of us, if not all of us, would've done the same things as him. I really can't blame Shinji for the things he did.

araragi - I'm laid back and I used to be asocial like him. But now I'm pretty social.
hachiman - he's like my younger self where I use to distance from people and search for true friendship but now i only relate to him when it come to wanting to find something genuine

Dunno... But maybe Krauser-san from Detroit Metal City, because I also play guitar, love metal. However I never used to like Pop music and probably never will, and also I favour Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal (incl. Progreesive/Technical Power/Death/Thrash Metal and Progressive Metalcore/Deathcore) and Djent above other subgenres unlike Krauser, who favours Death Metal, however in fact it's not heavier than your regular Thrash Metal.

Anyways, closest who I can think of.

There's three protagonists i relate with that come to mind, those being:

Luffy from One Piece: I relate to his free spirited nature and caring personality.

Gintoki from Gintama: I relate to his "can't be bothered" personality.

Kazuma from Konosuba: I relate to his sometimes "sarcastic and done with everyone's shit" personality.

I think so too. I think that Hachiman's character is much more profound than that.

Hachiman has a very pessimistic view of the world. Due to his traumatic past, he is very pragmatic and anti social. Past events of his lie has led him to believe that his existence doesn't matter to anyone.

He isolates himself from others because he thinks that it will benefit everyone, including himself, by doing so. He thinks that if he interacts with others, he might hurt them and he might get hurt in return too. (Not physically, of course!)

He tries his best to keep distance from others because he believes that the value of his existence is close to nonexistent to them and he will only be of annoyance to them. Consequently, he always stays alone.
