Like the title says, do you think guilty pleasures is a term that makes sense and should be used? Why? Do you yourself have some guilty pleasures? What does guilty pleasure mean to you.

this thread was brought to you by the Arthur Fining Davis foundation.
every single one of my forum posts is dumb and invalid except for 1, I don't claim them it was a different person it was all fake

Guilty Pleasure is a pleasure that makes you feel guilty, and it is a term that only applies to those who feel shame.

I don't like the term at all, I don't ever feel bad about liking a certain type of anime, my opinion is better than everyone else's after all, so what's there to feel bad about.

I understand guilty pleasure as something about what I clearly see its flaws, its weaknesses (they might disturb me more or less) but I still watch it.

I think the conflit about the giving the definintion of guilty pleasure might be in "who has noticed the flaws of the show?" ->
-if it is the one who watches it then I believe it's okay, it's the best situation : you make your own judgments
-BUT if the flaws are considered flaws by someone else (either a group, one person...) then it's not good. It means the person who watches the show consider his own opinions as inferior, but anime is about enjoyment, so from that you can't be wrong for enjoying a show. It's not about guilty pleasure anymore, it's about a lack of self confidence.

i.e : let's say I like a show X, I tell my friends, they say it's a bad show but "haha don't worry it's ok if you like it, let's say it's gonna be your guilty pleasure" ->
- I consider it my guilty pleasure because my friends told me it was, even if I don't really see why they don't like it I so call it my guilty pleasure => bad reaction
- I understand why they don't like it but those things they don't like about the show X, well I don't mind them and I still enjoy it, but I see those things so it's my gulity pleasure : it's a weird show, it has flaws that I see but despite it I enjoy the show => good reaction

For me it means a series that I know isn't really that good, but still enjoy for some reason.
For example Bastard!!
Pretty much everything about it is mediocre/subpar, yet I still find it entertaining.
It's just so ridiculously over the top and metal that I can't help but to like, even when it's so flawed on pretty much every level.

Oh and just to be clear, I don't feel guilty about liking stuff like that. That's just how I interpret the term "guilty pleasure"

No, they shouldn't exist. What it usually means is "I like it and most people think it's shit" like Mayoiga, or "I like it because of 'unsavory' content", which probably refers to ecchi. It's all based on the assumption that other people's opinions dictates quality

I believe in guilty pleasures. You feel guilty for indulging in something you like. Maybe some people don't feel guilt for doing anything they normally do, but guilty pleasures are a real thing.
At least for me. For instance, eating a family size bag of chips or stealing yo man.

Guilty pleasures are only you judging yourself. Every year I have a McDonald's binge. I used to think it was a guilty pleasure, but now I don't. I actually label my Anime guilty pleasures. "Corpse Party" and "School Days". Horrible. Awful. Dreadful pieces. But, I watch them often because I just can't look away.

For me "guilty pleasure" is shorthand for: This is bad, but I like it anyway because of [x] shallow reason(s). For the most part, I don't actually feel guilty about my guilty pleasures. It's just a useful term.

There isn't a moral obligation to enjoy anything. The term doesn't make any sense.

Unless you're talking about art made by notorious criminals like Lostprophets. Then, there might be something morally wrong with promoting the art of a scumbag.

Other than that, harem anime may be bad for you but self-harm isn't a crime.

I think guilty pleasures as a term makes sense. To me it means something that I enjoy that I wouldn't want to really tell anybody about. For me that's usually some sort of harem anime. I generally enjoy it but I wouldn't tell my friends about it or recommend they watch it.

A guilty pleasure is a pleasure someone feels guilty for indulging in. Most common with stigmatized sexualities and kinks, because feeling bad is highly unlikely to stop a person's sex drive.

I do not think it should be considered a guilty pleasure if the person is only sad by the reaction others would have, but that's just an opinion. To me the person doing it has to feel bad about his thoughts or actions directly, and derive pleasure anyways.

Yes, it is a thing that exists. Therefore I believe in it.

If you enjoy an anime that is constantly shat on by everyone or even if you realize it's bad but there's something about it that you like it/watch it for (I think a lot of ecchi harems would fall into this) then that's a guilty pleasure.

I thought people used the term to describe stuff with tonnes of flaws that they enjoyed a lot anyways.

Not that the person actually feels guilty but as this guy said:

Because they're bad. I love some terrible Nic Cage movies for reasons that have nothing to do with their quality. Mayoiga is like this. I know you don't believe in so bad it's good, but it's quite easy to tell when something's not evoking the intended feels. Usually this just makes it I enjoyable, but in some cases it's hilarious.

I do believe in 'so bad it's good, but if it's so bad it's good then it's a reason why it's good. It may not be the intended reason, but it does have some value. If a frying pan is bad as a frying pan but good as a toy, then overall it's useful.
