Ah, it's time for the main event matches. Honestly, hard work got them to here so it's time to showcase what they've learned.

Not surprising that there's more drama on the tennis courts though as usual. Two more episodes left to go and the gameplay we're seeing now is already showing some promise imo.

The show is throwing last minute drama to every members (even at Kanako), I hope those boys can stand their ground.
Also, I think we're fooled by having an official gay character (or two if counting Maki mom's friend), but there is no official gay relationship is going on. Yuta's role is just exist to show that this show embrace diversity, but we have to still rely on fanart community for romantic relationship. (Please draw one, Kanako!)

Liked seeing the tennis matches and the fact that these were closer games is nice. I really wanted Nao and Taiyo to win. It was a smart strategy too and I like that the show didn't introduce any new problems (besides the broken arm). They just let them rest for a bit.

In other news, Taiyo's parents actually see well adjusted. They care for a little too much (I don't think they needed to bring a medkit) but its something I didn't expect. It's a nice feeling though. With good parents, we got Maki's mom, Shingo's dad, Taiyo's parents and Rintaro's mother (I think).

Anyway, those games were pretty good. Liked they brought the song at the end too.
It really do be like that though.

The games were great, being a close one. Taiyo and Nao pair impressed me the most with her running. Good strategy.

One last game with Maki and Touma. Looking forward to it.

Damn, lots of pressure on Toma and Maki to win the next game lol. Wonder what Toma had to talk about with the teacher. Poor Rintaro though got all flustered over the idea of meeting his birth mom right before the big game

I don't recall any of Rintaro's (foster) parents being scummy so it's not just the mother (unless you're referring to the birth mother lol)

So Taiyou's parents are the type that don't think their kid can do anything wrong. These matches were awesome! Shame about the losses though. I loved the part where the ending started playing

This show desperately needs some kind of Season 2 announcement at the end of this season (or more like a postponed 2nd cour) so that it doesn't have to cram so many plot elements into its ending.
Story elements or not, I'd still like to see it get another season. There's still a lot more this show can do.

Regardless, a really good episode nonetheless. I view this as more a transition episode into the last major drama arc, whatever that may be.

Definitely my AOTS.

Don't forget that these are still middle school students, and that relationships may not be a high priority for them. That, and Yuta is still thinking about what kind of identity they want, so there's likely some more personal matters to attend to before a relationship is even a consideration.

At this point, I have no idea how things are gonna wrap up in 2 episodes to lead to some sort of satisfying conclusion.

Too bad the other two pairs lost but will Maki and Toma be able to make a difference?

I came into the episode expecting more on the drama side and was a bit surprised to see the tournament start already (was expecting that to be on the back burner until episode 11). I'm here probably more for the drama than the tennis, but at least when the tennis happens its done well and keeps me watching.

Bits of drama with Toma, and I guess Rintaro's mom wanting to meet him, but in both cases they seemed to be subtle (which is fine). Nao still doesn't seem quite okay yet, but he pulled it together for a great match.

I'm still nervous of what's to come, feels like we're in store for another emotional gut punch before the end. Lots of storylines are still up in the air and I'm on pins waiting to see what happens, especially with Toma and his mother and some more info on Yuu's 2 episode old cliffhanger would be great too.

Agree with zamandzoe that this was more of a transitional episode... and that it's my AOTS.

This anime really would be better off just being a slice of life sports show.

It didn't resolve anything it had set up and introduced even more drama to solve in only 2 episodes.
What about Nao? Seems he's fine now for no reason. What was the point of those two last episodes? And they really forgot about Yu's mom.

And even when the parents are not abusive, they still act stupid and one-dimensional like Taiyou's, saying out of nowhere that it's the other guy's fault if Taiyou lost. This show is really insistent in creating conflict even when it's not needed.

And Touma's dialogue with his mom is so stupid. The only reason we are supposed to think she's the bad guy is because of her reply, because any parent would be rightfully upset with what Touma said.

First match was rushed and I couldn't care. Second match was more interesting but my god that animation though.

Stars Align delivers yet another fine episode! The big tournament begins and the boys are up against some seriously tough opponents. After last week's episode really dug deep into the ugly realities of abusive parenting, I'm glad to see that the show moved away from that and focused on its more positive aspects, such as friendship and soft tennis. There are certain things about this show that I like and things that I don't; I don't have to like every little thing about Stars Align and I feel this show is at its best when it focuses on the soft tennis and the fun the boys have playing it.

Starting to think the series might be going a wee bit overboard with giving the characters family baggage for the sake of drama. It's one thing when a couple characters have the issue. But all the characters conveniently having their own family drama affecting them feels a bit overdone. It doesn't hurt the quality of the series as a whole for me, but it does have me questioning what kind of series Hoshiai wants to be at points: a slice-of-life sports show or high school drama delving into the family problems of its cast. Attempting to blend both together is starting to mess with the story direction at this point.

This anime really doesn't waste any time. The match has already started!

A lot of the plot points seem to be connecting slowly.

Taiyo has normal embarrassing parents! No wonder they never showed up throughout the series. In a short anime like this, they didn't have much of a reason to appear.

The boys' friendship is so heartwarming. They don't talk about crap like 'power of friendship', but the power of friendship is stronger here than any other anime I've seen.

Lmao when they revealed Maki had been trying to bait the Misaki-kid and not an animal.

One of the twins looks a lot more like Maki than his own twin. Lol. It was unavoidable because of the art style of this anime, so I can just laugh a little and ignore it.

It took me a while to realise that they used the full version of the ed song.

I am still curious to know more about what happened with Yuu after episode 8.

I want to know more about Maki and Ryouma's relation. If they just show two similarly-aged boys that are close without defining how they see each other, I will end up shipping them.

Two episodes left, so I guess Maki's dad is going to appear soon. That man's terrifying!

The way everything is somehow actually coming together, I am starting to feel like we won't get a second season. :(

Why did the producers introduce the twins now? According to the tournament sheet, Maki and Toma (entry #17) have to win three matches to meet the twins (entry #1). I thought they would manage to win only a match in this season.

Really glad this episode was more focused on the sport aspect but on the other hand, it's sad to see how inconsistent the story has become lately. I mean, another episode has passed and Yuu's situation with his mother hasn't been cleared yet and Nao, who was about to snap to a little girl last week, acted like nothing had happened...

Anyways, there are only two episodes left and they still need to:
- Explain Toma's situation with his mother.
- Solve the issue with Maki's father who was supposed to come back yet it looks like he doesn't need money anymore.
- Explain what happened with Yuu's mother.
- Establish whether Nao's plot line will have any conclusion or not.
- Establish Rintarou's reunion with his biological mother because why saying she wants to meet him so suddenly if you are not pretending to make said reunion happen.
- Establish if Tsubasa's family will do something regarding his father's stupid masculinity complex.
- Something between lines was established last episode regarding Shingo's "origins" but I'm not sure if they will give major importance to that matter...
- Explain the reason of why Itsuki's mother poured hot water on him (this is mostly nitpicking since this storyline is beyond dead but it still bothers me that they never gave an specific reason for her behaviour).
- And finally, I guess Mitsue's plot line is solved to some extent but I still find a bit odd the fact that her parents never appeared on screen.

I think I'm still forgetting something but I will leave it here. Sad to think I once considered this series to be my AOTS but well.

This show suffers from what lot of originals do, too much content is planned for too little time. They should have gone with 2 seasons for this, 24 to 26 eps or have two seasons. There is too many characters and too many conflicts for 12 ep series.

The show is still rly good, but it could be lot better if they gave it more time. Now it feels like they had to cut some scenes like the match against girls and cram tons of things in episodes.

I wanted to slap Nao and Taiyo so hard this episode. I'm glad they got their shit together and performed well in the match. Now it's up to our main duo. The show is so dark that if they lose and the soft tennis club is shut down I wouldn't even be surprised lol. But I am hopeful.

I wish there wasn't too much drama in this show tho. At first, it felt realistic but now it's overwhelming. Does no one really have a nice normal family? This is the only complaint I have about this show.

It's still one of the best animes this season, nevertheless.

@SouthRzVa unfortunately that's the case of trying to solve everything within limited time, and these are unresolved issues. And @KomaDoll yes, and while it makes sense to lengthen it, it's the case of "making things light" to forget about the issue, fledgling between sports and drama.

Rintaro meeting his biological mother...
Toma disregardinf his mom due to unknown reasons...
Mitsue disregarding her haters...
And worse of all, having Kinuyo the student council president look down on them on their training...
All these are just "convenient" plot holes, now that I see the inadequacies of this show, even if they're great for the most part.

Before the match, Taiyo getting spoiled by his parents shows the support. And then, slowly and surely, the boys of Shijo Minami keep their way up....ALBEIT TOO FAST to see the journey. With Rintaro's legs acting up, it was a match they couldn't win for the first match.

Maki bribing Oji over "animal" food is such a tactic. And the Taiyo/Nao pairing is as nervous as they thought, but having fun they overcame, and still lost, getting praised by the opponent is a feat.

Now is just between Toma and Mali to prove their stances in the match itself.

I've got an eerie feeling about this, felt like with how this show is paced out, it's leaving its questions behind and going straight for gold. Not to mention that there's a lot to debate about this.

If (given more time and) all the problems are solved, it seems unnatural. If many problems are left open, frustration would be left. At the point the author introduced too much problems and made the show look ridiculous, it's too late to finish the show smartly. So, there would be two options: frustrating open ending or Deus ex machina. As we already began to see Deus in Maki, the latter has high probability.

This is going to get way more rushed than Astra's ending calling it now. With only 2 episodes left, there's barely any room for a "decent" ending now. Barely any problem have been solved and they keep adding more drama to it. 12 episodes is not enough to flesh out an entire soft tennis team and some trash characters that are barely relevant (like Mitsue and the student council president), or at least, not like this show has been handling it.

Inb4, Maki wins the tournament and by doing so all parents become self aware of their shitty one dimensional personality, reconsidering their behavior and give us a "happy" Disney finale

Not to be nitpicky but trans (Maki's mom's friend)/non-binary (Yu) ≠ gay. If you want a show like that, there are plenty of others. Or stick to fanart.

Anyway this was a good episode. Nao kind of annoys me sometimes but I know it's because he's been through a lot. Toma is pretty scary lol he still needs anger management. Or something.

I didn't expect the matches to start already, I thought they would be the last thing, but here we are. Nao and Taiyou had to participate in Tsubasa and Shingo's place too, and I thought Nao's mother would raise hell, but it didn't happen, at least not yet. There's a lot happening with the others though. Rintarou's biological mother wants to meet him, and I hope he has what it takes to deal with this. Mitsue posted her new art despite all of the negative feedback her first drawing of Maki had, and I loved her strength to do it. Shinjou's situation with his mother and brother is also coming back to the spotlight. At least Taiyou's parents seemed nice and supportive? I mean, they were kind of embarrassing and said some awful stuff, but they were trying. Oh, and I love how Maki got information out of Ouji with food, and I guess it's up to him and Shinjou to win this after all, but Shinjou seems a bit tense.

It was mentioned in an earlier week's thread, but it is likely that Itsuki's mother was suffering from postpartum depression during the boiling water event.

Thanks, I had the exact same theory since it would be the more fitting one. Sadly, a proper reason was never mentioned and the issue was quickly forgotten in order to give focus to the next character's family drama.

Good episode but meh another one with family issue. Well atleast Taiyo has caring parents it seems. The matches were great, too bad they lost. Well now it's all upto Maki and Toma to win.

lol I like Taiyou's parents, they are pretty funny, all the other kids have at least one twisted parent, Taiyou's are weird but in a good way, finally some good parents
