Actually, I have never come across such people. Personally, I don't give a shit about strangers telling me on how to spend my money.

Because many people prefer efficient method, if they can get what they want for free without sever consequences why bother? If you decided to support the industry good for you.

because western people think they matter and there overly political correctness makes them believe they have to pay, talk about manipulating a civilzation for consumption
the only reason people would pay for something that is free is to be full of pretense and feel better about themselves because they did what the state dictates as right

I don't believe I've met anyone that's said that seriously. I have, of course, met people who differentiate between piracy and stealing. But never have I met someone who has seriously said that paying for stuff you like is stupid.

I personnally think it would be stupid of me to pay for it when you can have it freely. But that's according to my situation, my personnality, my values, ... Nothing to do with you.

If I tell you "I think it's stupid", it doesn't mean you're stupid. Same as when you say to someone that his work sucks, it doesn't mean the person who did it sucks...
I find this amalgam way too often nowadays :/

Got me! Of course I always ask for such DVD's and what not as presents, and I buy them when I've got the cash.

If an anime I enjoyed a lot is available for DVD/Blueray, then when I have the money I'd most definitely purchase it for collective reasons.

Pretty much this. I dislike streaming and don't even do it for free, so why would I pay for it? Especially considering I can't even watch anything on there anyway because of region locks. Idk what OP has been smoking, but I've never had to pay even close to 500$ for any series. Actually buying DVD/BDs is not as impossible as OP makes it seem, I regularly do it. It's not a myth.
I probably regret this post by now.

This is BS. There's no point in buying DVDs from Japan if you can't even understand them.

I buy my Anime DVDs to watch. I blind buy every licensed Anime that looks interesting to me.

I only torrent unlicensed stuff that was never released in North America.

Many people do not realize that by watching anime being streamed freely on the internet, they are making it more difficult for anime studios to receive revenue for a potential new season for any given anime. But considering the devoted North American fans that the Japanese companies pay no attention towards as they only bother to sell dubbed version to the region, I don't see it mattering to begin with. Since they care not about the sales in North America, watching it from out of country wouldn't really effect the studios, only in the long run when dubs are released.

Many ways to purchase anime online or at your local mall/store. I go over to the mall and they have sells and deals with bundles purchased. I've collected over 50 DVD's over the past few years, and it's easily cost efficient with even a small budget.

The west thinks anime is some stupid chinese cartoons so it isn't worth spending money on.
Anime needs to go the route of streaming since no one in the west buys shit.

It's not stupid at all to pay for something that you like so that you can get more of it in the future. If no one bought anime, it wouldn't exist. This is just common sense.

I usually buy my favorites on bluray.

Not stupid at all.

It's fucking stupid to call someone stupid for supporting an industry they like, while the critics themselves are pirating everything.

I know people RL from Scandinavia who actually pay for Crunchyroll, a service that spits on and wipes its ass with Scandinavian customers, having less than 15% of the content at a higher price than Americans get.

Honestly, yes, that shows quantifiable mental stunty.

Especially the ones who justify it with "but I use a VPN" - that's just paying to break the law, not winning any points with that.

Also, people who still use optical media in 2015 may not be stupid, but certainly living in the past. At least I don't know anyone IRL who still use discs, so I guess it's a thing in poorer countries.

You are stupid for listening to those kind of people. what's so stupid about spending your goddamn money for something you like?
Unless you can't even afford school tuition, room rent and daily food but manage to spend your money on this kind of thing, then yes, you're one hell of a stupid person.

You've only completed 8 Anime. What do you know about being an otaku?

I don't care about the Japanese industry. The more North American DVDs that are purchased, the more chances a company will take to license more obscure Anime in North America.

Not everyone can afford a crunchyroll/netflix/etc subscription, nor is it available in every country. Parents don't always buy you what you want when you ask them, nor are they always able to. And not everyone gets pocket money, either. And others aren't old enough to work at summer jobs (Yes, there's an age requirement, at least in some countries. Don't know about the US, as I don't live there.)

Just saying that everyone has their reasons for doing the things they do, and everyone lives under different circumstances.

Now, while watching it for free doesn't help the industry at all, it is convenient for those unable to pay for subscriptions, BD's, and DVD's, those that are willing to 'pirate' the anime they hold so dearly.

not really.. unless if by "no one" you also mean the tv station buying licence for anime.. or movie goers buying ticket to see anime movie
which is a bit different than buying anime
(hope that made sense)

VPN do not sound illegal; are they really outlawed? 0_o

as for the disk part, i believe they are popular in japan which is not a poor country
poor country would rather have cheap bootlegs which might be more convenient than torrenting on 30 kps

just of curiosity, how limited are the limited editions, and what are the best limited edition goodies you got?

as for obscure anime, bokurano got recently licensed together with a few more-or-less obscure older titles..
discotek are pretty cool guys when it comes to obscure licenses
or at least that's the impression i get from their ANN page
