Definitely needed to be longer. I liked the main two but outside of them and his friend every other character suffers from the “”Who are you again” syndrome. Which is a shame because I liked the movie but was left with the feeling of wanting something more from it . Somewhere in here is a incredible movie and I feel as if more love was put into it. This very well could’ve very well could’ve been an amazing piece of cinema and a generation defining piece .

I went into this in the beginning thinking I would end up feeling bad for Yutaka, but the whole time I just felt bad for Taku, man was a g. Seriously don't get this romance though, there was literally no reason why he would fall in love with Rikako in the first place with how shit she treated him

Easy 4/10 I'm actually surprised this is listed as the 2nd best romance movie (at the time) in that mal article

Seeing simps defend this movie is hillarious

There is zero chemistry between the two main leads at all
Holy shit, some ol you guys are really making the excuse that this is realistic,it is not it is a shitty teenage soap opera with a goody two-shoes main guy, who simps over an unlikeable cunt

He had so many chances of leaving her alone, but by the end, it makes it clear that Taku will always be a simp

I don't get the problem with the absence of "chemistry", it's not really about a couple of lovers.
I can't really say a thing, sadly, since I am rarely clear when thinking about it (it actually angered me the 1st time I saw it accidently)

Score: 9/10
Enjoyment: 0~5/5

Between Ano hi ni kaeritai and this special, Mochizuki is really a good pick to direct this kind of stories. @FMmatron If you ever feel like "going back to that" kind, it's a pretty good choice.

I should check his own created Pierrot magical girl someday...

@Shock_Yin For non english speakers, could you clarify what 's a "simp"??

@Clars_sama Well, they're teenagers, it's hormonal. ;) (More seriously, to be in love sadly requires not a grain of logic and reason.)

a little too short and I couldn't figure the girls personality out at all:/
All in all great movie though, kinda like Whisper of the Heart, yeah<3
I'd say 8.5/10 if that was possible, now I have to decide between 8 and 9._.
Let's say...uhm..............9!
Whisper of the Heart was a straight 8 though

This is where the beggining of not so good Ghibli starts. The decision to let young directors make their own product resulted into something that doesn't have the Ghibli magical touch in it. Even tho there were parts that I liked, overall its a pretty dissapointing and not memorable film, I guess this is one the weakest films produced by Ghibli but the good part is, that its not made by Miyazaki or Takahata

A simple SOL, there wasn’t much to it but I loved Morisaki, great MC & overall a great guy. I smiled at his every action, like when he got up during dinner with his family & his mum was nagging at him while he sat away from them in front of the TV, and that phone call with his mum while he was in Tokyo..... I dunno there was this little charm to him, quite like the easygoing, unassuming, down-to-earth kind boy-next-door vibe

I was glad when Matsuno picked him up at the airport, glad they didn’t let a girl ruin the friendship they had

Also loved the 90s fashion, everyone dressed so well ♡____♡

but i’ll probably remember over and over again

first ghibli movie that i didn't really like.
it was very beautiful, yes, and i sometimes watch some things just for the design and animation of it, but the story...
although i really do like the fact that it's very realistc, the main guy is one of the few i've seen that is not abusive or disrespectful and the girl does have a personality and flaws, what we don't see very much in anime these days i just ended it feeling it was futile.
maybe it's because i'm past my teen years and i now find teenagers to be very annoying, because that was the feeling i ended it with. i was annoyed.
thinking back about it, it was okay, but i'm probably not in a time of my life to actually enjoy watching these teenagers just being teenagers.

They should have been gay, then this movie would be 10/10. I love everythig about this movie but there is no way any of those guys would be in love with that anoying bitch.

i really enjoyed the style of drawing. it wasn't too complex and easy on the eyes. i also liked the nuanced behaviors that the mc exhibited, for example the leg shake when he was called on the phone or when he was called down to the cafe.

the music was especially fitting, since it took on this tone of light and naive.

everything about the film/show was light. i thoroughly enjoyed it, but the ending was kind of meh. a cliffhanger imo. well what's next now that the ending happened? only the viewer can surmise.

Watching this gave me a good night. One of the Studio Ghibli's best Drama - Romance film, with the animation, vocals and how realistic the essence and story of the film was. Old aged anime really is something.

That was interesting. The characters acted in a very "human" way, which is one of Studio Ghibli's best tricks. The atmosphere of the movie is very lively, also the backstories of the characters were well developed. The movie could be longer though, in order to explain more and keep the pace a bit slower.

Overally, this movie is very good. It kept me entertained, even though it could have more.

Honestly, I don't know what to feel about this. I enjoyed the movie, but I feel like it could've developed more. I watched it because I didn't have time to watch anything longer than an hour because I had work. This one was by far the shortest movie, 1 hr 15 mins or so. But, I was kind of satisfied and was also kind of wanting more at the same time.

I watched it on Netflix, as I'm kind of on a Ghibli kick right now, as I watched Arietty just yesterday. So I was in the mood to continue more Ghibli films that are on Netflix. Don't know what to watch next.

Now that I think about it, it felt like an entire romance anime adapted in a 1 hour movie. It definitely could've had more time.

The angry reviews on the anime's splash page are hilarious. The one that calls Murata "kind of a racist" for making fun of Morisaki's Kochi accent in particular just screams "I'm 14 and writing a very serious anime review." Not that I would've appreciated this movie much as a child either but it's still really funny.

I'm definitely a sucker for gorgeous 90s anime. I watched this and Whisper of the Heart pretty close together (partly because they're short) and realized how much I appreciate simple everyday stories like this. Porco Rosso has always been my favourite Ghibli movie but the stuff with absolutely no fantasy at all (and Castle of Cagliostro) are true treasures.

Although I weirdly kind of agree with the commenter here who said they should've been gay, lol. I really like the story as it is but that wouldn't have been a bad way to change it.

man i watched it 10 years ago and now again, on Netflix.

This movie disapeared from my memories, completely.

I think it is because there is a big NOTHING happening.

Annoying big city go to smaller, hates it, two boys like her, but no relation grow from this... and high school days are already over.

Thanks now i can set it complete on MAL, because i will forgot it again.

Ok, so Rikako's character was annoying throughout most of the film and her development (if there even was one) happened off-screen. Then Taku made some stupid and questionable decisions to get involved with her and somehow ended up falling in love (yeah, that makes sense). Lastly, the glasses dude was the most believable one yet but he was also kind of nagging towards Rikako and and his relationship with Taku didn't really seem stable.

The rest of the characters were either forgettable or not important, the music consisted of maybe 2 songs, the animation was flat... yeah, nothing really to recommend on my behalf.

9/10, I really liked it! I thought it was a lot of fun. It was kinda chaotic but I like that vibe lol. I thought it was a nice story about high school life. I wasn't a huge fan of Rikako, she was kinda crazy but I didn't hate her though.

And omg this movie was SO Kochi. Like, there was that part where she was talking about how surprised she was that people in Kochi actually talk in their Kochi dialect and yeah, there was a LOT of Tosa-ben (said Kochi dialect) in this movie. Like omg, it was in almost every sentence they said. They also had a bunch of places from around Kochi, including Obiyamachi, Harimayabashi, Kochi Castle, the local trams, Ryoma Airport, Otemae (their high school), and they even included a bit of yosakoi by showing some naruko for a bit! So yeah, VERY Kochi lol

Disliked this film. That girl had really no personality and was quite manipulative. I guess it's realistic in a way cause boys will like girls for being pretty not for what they really are. But she was hitting him, telling at him, lying about what she's doing. Meanwhile stringing a bunch of boys around. Just a yucky character

I gotta agree w/ Angler990 here, I wathed this movie simply to saw I've watched all Studio Ghibli films. and prior to seeing saw a YT vid ranking all the studio ghibli films worst to best w/ this being the worst. I thought it couldnt be that bad given that its Ghbli. and I gotta say This film does everything right audibly and visually but thats it the story and characters simply suck.

I think I've finally found it: the worst Ghibli heroine, or should I say, the best Ghibli vilainess within this special. With apologies to Orwell:

Proof that Ghibli needs to stick to the supernatural/environmental stuff, and leave the teen romantic dramedies to others.

It made sense if him and his friend became more than friends. I mean he said that first but c'mon this was made in 1993 so it's understandable for me. I wouldn't thought that the ending said that "he was crazy about her" after all what happened. Crazy about what?? She's rude, spoiled and literally crazy!!! *Insert she deserved that slap back*. That brat hurts you and YOU THINK YOU REALLY LOVE HER! this is a waste of time. The story sucks. This is one of the worst ghibli movie I'd seen... I give the story 2/10. The art is 10/10

i've never disliked a ghibli movie, film, special, whatever it is. and i've already watched the majority of the big hitters. but this was sorely unpleasant and unsatisfactory to watch. exactly where, was taku crazy over this chick? what kind of chemistry, all they were doing the whole movie was yelling and heaps of slapping. just not believable that it ended in romance. i don't even know what's so good about that bitch? if i'm agreeing with everyone in the damn cast berating her without sympathy, then there has got to be some ounce of truth there. lies to a guy that she lost her money so that he'll give her some, and throws in that she knew he had a job so it'd be no biggie if he could just pitch in. after all, she's in a pinch right? nah, gets two tickets to tokyo and despite her only friend expressing distress over her strict family, switches the intended location which she again lied about. then it became a whole fiasco where poor guy taku had to go in place of the friend, only to be told to act as her boyfriend to get rikako's previous boyfriend jealous. there has to be an end to this clown shit. f*ck.

you know what would have made this interesting and enjoyable? if it just turned gay. two best friends reminiscing that they fought over some annoying ass transfer from tokyo to the point where they stopped talking until graduation. it was all dumb in the end but they grew from it and realized... cut. action

the animation and everything else is separate, 8.5/10. replayed that second slap multiple times, i felt the force.

I wanted to say that I liked her narrative style, just that. There was no chemistry between the two of them, when she said she wanted the money for something, I suspected it... for what? I don't quite understand the relationship with her family not even the father's girlfriend came out to introduce herself.... It was all very rushed...

Andddddddd another Ghibli movie that I love again, I knew I was gonna like this despite this movie not being Ghibli’s best work to lots and tbh I’d say this is still their best and idc
I loved the melodramatic soap opera style this movie was giving off,
I really liked how the screen goes into a small square with a white background to tell us the audience that we’re watching a flashback really nice touch that I loved a LOT
I liked how slow paced this movie was, it really gave a more serious tone almost like real life depiction of Japanese school life
I also liked the romance and how high school romance ain’t all sunshine and rainbows at times and that you don’t always end up with a high school sweetheart but I did like how the classmates all linked up for drinks after they all graduated :D
The OST is amazing and makes me feel happy and fluffy, that little tune that plays in the beginning when he sees Rikako in that orange shirt and at the end when he meets her again, it so nice and addicting🔥

Rikako was pissing me off sooooo bad with the way she was acting but deep down I knew she wouldn’t be like this if it wasn’t for her family problems and the fact her dad doesn’t even want her with him but I put my anger aside and chalk it up that and she’s a high school kid and high school girls can be moody some times and like she said she was on her period at times so I cut her some slack but I had hope that at the end of movie she’s gonna apologize to him and lay him back since she wanted to “meet the guy who likes sleeping in a bathtub” haha

Lastly I CRIED LAUGHING when Taku slapped tf outta Rikako and I’ll be honest that was some real nigga shit, she put him through so much by taking his money and telling ppl that he and her went to a and had the audacity to slap my boy?? Like aw hell nahhhh my boy unlocked his inner Kazuma and slapped TF outta that girl with father issues😤😤

This is a really nice guilty pleasure vibes this movie gives off only thing I hated was how short this movie was I wanted to see more of Taku and Rikako😫🥲 Anyway another 10/10 Ghibli movie for me man :D

Normal anime romance, has its own particularities even with all the normal situations where you can get identify with. Interesting by the way it shows the japanese society at the time and obviusly the photography, animation and drawing in general, like it. 7/10.

Honestly, Rikako made the experience of this movie worse with her horrible and distasteful personality and attitude. I understand that she felt like an outcast since she's from the city and everyone else is from this town, and they all know each other, but she never once attempted to connect with the others while being rude and disrespectful to the three people who continuously tried to befriend her and look after her, Yutaka, Akiko, and Taku. I also cannot believe that Taku fell for someone who kept being rude to him the entire time, but I guess to each their own.

PS: Actually, Taku had more chemistry with his friend Yutaka than with Rikako. I said what I said. Bye.
