HOW CAN THEY BREATH IN SPACE?! Did I miss something important regarding that or what? I feel like an idiot here since no one in the first page of the comment section has pointed this out...

When they enter those abandoned space ships, Faye says that "We got air". That's why all those guys could breath.

Also, that 98 years old man had the most perfect death.

More and more I realize that I'm watching this show for the filler. This was far more up my alley than that Jupiter Jazz two-parter. Great ep.

I am kind of unsure as what happened during that chess game.

When Chessmaster Hex referred to Ed as either an idiot or a genius, did he meant by that Ed wasn't lured into a trap?

That kind of thing is kind of obvious and doesn't require much intelligence to figure out, considering it was suppose to be a move that leads up to a "checkmate".

Good episode!

Damn must suck to plot your revenge and forget about it in 50 years.

I kinda miss playing Chess. I still know the basics and played a fair share of matches.

Ed seems to be good at chess, but Hex has beaten him in one week!

Though Ed would have won if she checked mate him in that move, but Ed dragged the game too long and now she lost.

Great stuff!! Seems we're getting Faye's episodes next!

Can't wait for the next episode!

What a bittersweet ending. Everything turns out great and Hex dies happily doing what he loves, which still made me sad. The music with it was fantastic as well, and now I can't wait to see Faye's backstory.

To win at chess while completely senile and on deaths door... he must have really been an expert.

And as for plot... I really wish there was an overall one... but I'm slowly accepting the fact there won't be. I kind of wish the Ep 5, Ep 11-12 had been flushed out into a harrowing story for the rest of the anime after 12, but I guess that isn't to be.

I like how each episodic episode has that kinda of closure to it, that just makes it all worth it, some give it a more melancholy like vibe like this one, while others are more laid back.

It returns peacefully to the usual self-contained narrative, pleasant to follow and, in this particular anime series, also to listen. Narration is not strange, but bizarre, that leads us to reflect. The drawings and animations, are really nice. Excellent soundtrack.

How much of a cheap asshole one must be to constantly complain about group's lack of income throughout the series? That truly baffles me.

On the topic, a classic CB comedy episode with really touching bittersweet ending. Never gets old.

Ed getting electrocuted then jolting back up and scaring everyone was hilarious!!!

The chessmaster thinks so far in advance, setting all this up to happen 50 years in the future by which time he has forgotten about it lol.

Again, I am surprised at all the praise for this episode given how weak and inconsistent the plot was.

The three crew members split up at the beginning to try and catch the people involved separately because of how exorbitant the bounty offered is. This is a team that is used to working in tandem to bring down bad guys, but they deviate from this because they are all suddenly super greedy? Wait, what?

But then they give a nonsensical stipulation about how it actually has to be THE mastermind so that nobody gets paid despite all three of them actually apprehending people directly involved in the space gate attacks. No bounty hunters would accept a contract for something like that because the chances of failure are far too high. In addition the corporation would surely some incentive for the henchmen to be caught so they could investigate this matter further.

So the Bebop crew reunite because of how wealthy they will be if they succeed. However the corporation is ridiculously unhelpful to the bounty hunters they commissioned because why? That makes no sense if they are using bounty hunters to keep a secret away from the authorities and paying a high amount as the reward to keep everybody involved mum. Surely you would want to cooperate closely and be as helpful as possible to increase the chance of the perpetrator being captured.

Furthermore it is heavily implied that the corporation knew or suspected who might be behind the gate heists, which begs the question why such a massive and wealthy organisation wouldn't just send their own security teams or hired mercenaries to solve the case.

Finally the actual revenge plot doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Chessmaster Hex quit the warpgate manufacturer because he did not believe the gates were ready to be launched due to some issues with the software encoding. So he hatches a plan to activate 50 years later before the warpgates will receive their first software update? What the fuck? If your concern about the warpgates being launched prematurely is tied to a concern for safety why would you wait 50 years before doing something about it? Why didn't he go to the media, the local governments of the planets installing gates or some whistleblower to draw attention to this? Also, why would you bankrupt innocent individuals who happen to be utilising the gates at the wrong time as part of your crusade against the corporation? Why wouldn't the corporation do anything about the loopholes given they have been aware of them for 50 years? Does it take 50 years to engineer a software update to address them? Why have they left this glaring weakness in critical technology?

Why would Spike not demand anything from the corporation when the entire motivation of trying to solve it separately before teaming up again was based on the fact that it such an EXORBITANT amount of money? I imagine the corporation behind one of the most important pieces of space travel technology could essentially grant you anything but you just ask that some demented man is left along so Ed can play chess? What the actual fuck?

The series is great, the characters are cool, the episodes ooze style and the score is some of the best of any anime; but the writing in numerous episodes is absolutely fucking stupid. Turns out most of the fans don't even pick up on it because they aren't paying attention but it's actually insulting to anybody even thinking along.

I'd say depending on how one weights their scores, 9's are definitely justified if you weigh less on story and more on aesthetics, sound, and cinematography. The amount of 10's are where I feel this show is overrated as it's story lacks too much for a 10, at least at this point. This series seems to suffer from the cult classic status it has which perceives the series better than in actuality.

I love how these 3 old men just keep showing up wherever Bebop and it's crew are at.

Beautiiful ending for Chessmaster Hex, one final epic match of chess before moving on.
