Doesn’t matter if it’s shounen or slice of life or even Romance. Nearly every show has excessive and unessecary shouting. Why are they always huffing and puffing?

I find it especially strange because I am black and we are seen as loud people (generally speaking we are).

Asians are seen as reserved people for the most part. Generally speaking - it is rare to see an Asian person raising their voice or expressing anger / excitement / dismay in public. These are just my anecdotes. We can keep the discussion strictly on anime I you wish to avoid mod intervention.

SHOUTING IS A PHYSICALLY AUDIBLE (and visual) WAY FOR A CHARACTER TO EXPRESS THEM SELF WITH EMPHASIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"What is up with the excessive shouting in anime?"

Bad writers think that hysteria is a suitable way of conveying strong emotions.

I don't but know but pretty sure It's related to this especially for battle shounen, as for comedy propose i think it had anything to do with Boke and Tsukkomi

I assume it's to create hype and tension, but honestly it fails most of the time and is kinda annoying

i remember someone mentioning inuyashiki has real actors as voice actors and it feels more realistic..

beastars also feels like this..

as for why because the audience is on the spectrum, and need emotions to be more obvious; see also thomas the train engine

Maybe it's the same thing with the eyes - they are big in the anime, so it's easier to show their emotions, so these two things are working on the same rules :D

Well one of the reasons why I mostly watch anime with only cute girls in it, is because they are not as loud as the boys

Without the anime males who spend most of their time running around screaming fighting misbehaving and being assholes . The anime are less noisy. IMO boys are more rowdy in general and piss me off

But my anime girls on the other-hand are nice cute and have a calmer nature. Anime girls are much better for my taste and they are so damn adorable. So I prefer my lesbians! My old poor ears suffer less when its only cute girls around

Ofc there are some irritating loud females out there as well .But in general they are much calmer. And dont spend their time fighting or screaming

Anime was made to be weird if it actually existed. Just look at how expressive they can be, and irl that would be strange as fuck.

Sometimes it looks cool. Granbelm fights would've been half as good if not for shouting. ERUNESUTAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

That's because the reserved asians need some screaming in their lives, just so that they learn to cope with their emotions.

Boisterous characters are reason enough to drop an anime if someone, like me, just wants to chill and relax watching the show. It has been a long time since I watched an anime with annoyingly loud characters but, judging by this post, they seem to be still around.

Thinking the more overexaggerated the emotions shown are the better it is. Which is simply the opposite of the truth, at least for me.

It's Bout emotions.
I really love this about anime tbh

Whenever used for comedic effect or just pure emotional drama .
Anime is just very extreme with emotions

Shouting is more effective at capturing an audience’s attention, in addition to portraying the ‘straight man’ role in comedy, expressing extreme emotion, developing rowdy characters, etc...

Japanese fiction, in general, is very theatrical. That includes film and of course includes anime which adds a layer of stylistic overemphasis on its own. Also, the whole thing that Japanese people are quiet and speak low is, I think, a myth.

Emotions I guess?

Or maybe it's the same logic as the one that's popular in my region - person who talks the loudest is in the right.

All anime characters are retards that need to assert dominance by shouting as much as possible.

I think that it should express a characters strong emotion about a certain scene. A read in a lot of comments that only bad writers use it. I dont think it is completely true. I just think bad writers tend to use it more excessive but loud shouting is deffinitly used by good writers too (like Isayama, Hajime)

must be a displacement psychology thing the japanese cannot do that in real life so they fantasize it or let it all out in fiction like anime

Can't remember the names but the ones that used to really irritate me where some of the monster battle type shows that seemed to follow the success of Pokémon. Each show just seemed to be nonstop shouting about which card they were playing and which special abilities. The anime equivalent of a bad headache.

I stuff I watch these days doesn't seem so bad but given the stressful situations characters find themselves in in some of the fantasy storylines you kind of expect some raised voices.

I do find some of the little anger explosions over what seem like quite trivial incidents or comments in some of the gentler or more romantic films a bit funny sometimes. It's like someone just kicks off for a few seconds over nothing and you think what was that all about?

Lol funnily enough as much as the shouting females annoy me in most shows I actually tend to gravitate towards shows and anime figurines of fighting, sword-wielding females. And irl my girl is a but of a tsundere with the occasional yelling for seemingly for some small reason.

Mostly based. But there are shows with mostly girls that have shouting too. Like Symphogear, Kill la Kill, Cross Ange, Keijo, Ikkitousen, Precure, Killing Bites... girls can be hot blooded too. I prefer it that way.

Yes just the shows I had in mind. I was also thinking of some anime fighting games like Street Fighter, Blazblue, Guilty Gear, Under Night In-Birth etc.

Maybe it's a projection of the reservation of Asian culture? Like, young people in Japan must have some kind of larger socioemotional response to yelling than us in America, especially when it's a teenage character doing the yelling.

You pose an interesting question that can't be simply written off as other users have done, as yelling and shouting in anime are more exaggerated than other expressions thereof.
