----------------------------------------
Even Fruits Basket has an episode with swimsuits :p

I find it interesting that Saki and Arisa decided to once again pay another visit to Tohru similar to one of the previous episodes. Arisa is such a badass though, especially when she was an yankee.

Definitely an interesting episode that showed more of her character's personality and connection with Tohru and even her mom.

Finally got a little background on best girl. With no mom and a drunk of a father, you can see why she ended up in that delinquent life.

Interesting to know that Arisa was part of a gang.

They decided to buy a swimsuit for Tohru. We also got to see more of Tohru's mother.

I really enjoyed this episode. I’m still not super happy about the change in order of events, but that didn’t detract from any enjoyment value. Plus it’s nice to see this animated since it was skipped in the ‘01 anime.

Seeing the group shop for swim suits was funny, & I think Uo’s past is being done very well. I liked the addition of the older girl actually seeing where Tohru & Kyoko live. It adds to something that will come up next episode.

Also, I’ve always enjoyed the middle school girls who want to get Uo in the present. And the after credits scene had me laughing so loud! It was great. Momiji defeats all!!!

Tohru's mom is the best! So sad how Uotani didn'd see that when she finally met her, but in this regard teens are stupid anyway especially when they're delinquents. Those after credits made my day.

It was nice watching Uochan's backstory.
I can't but think about myself 13 years ago watching anime. These backstories were "normal" back then so I guess this one felt nostalgic in a way.

I liked the episode. I wonder if they have to take 2 episodes for this though, but oh well. The pacing is fine as long as other stories get their time too.

Hmmm, looks like this latest episode decided to skip ahead and cover Arisa's character backstory for a two-parter. Arisa's backstory was not originally depicted until later in the manga's 7th volume with Chapters 39-41, and didn't get any depiction in the 2001 anime beyond a passing mention from Arisa. This episode covers Chapter 39 and up to the middle of Chapter 40. For the most part, the episode was faithfully adapted, though the order of which Arisa explained her backstory got shuffled around a bit in this episode. Here were differences I spotted with this episode...

-The opening depicting a younger Arisa entering her apartment at night was added for the anime.
-The conversation that Arisa and Saki have over Tohru wearing a school swimsuit took place while the girls were in a locker room changing clothes in the manga instead of while observing Tohru swimming in the pool.
-The comparison Arisa made of Tohru’s swimsuit situation was not visually depicted in the manga.
-While Arisa talked with the Sohmas about getting Tohru a swimsuit, Kyo and Shigure were shown with clothes having pattern designs in the manga. Plus when Tohru arrives in the room in the manga, she has a more simpler dress on. Saki also has a more simpler dress she wears in the manga as well.
-While shopping for Tohru’s swimsuit, Kyo and Yuki were shown standing up in the manga instead of sitting on a bench.
-The brief shot showing Saki having Tohru share her thoughts of some swimsuits while Arisa goes after the Sohmas boys was added for the anime.
-Before Yuki and Kyo argued over the kind of color they’d like for Tohru’s swimsuit, there was a pause between when they declared their colors and started their argument, where the boys and Arisa were depicted in stick figure form in the manga.
-Tohru was more flustered in the manga when receiving her gift from Saki, Arisa, and the boys.
-When Arisa mentions her past as part of a gang of delinquents, there is a bit removed where a stunned Kyo remarked about it and Arisa commenting that she was a bad girl back then.
-When Arisa is describing her delinquent days, the flashback was depicted differently in the manga. Instead of showing her in a fight, Arisa is shown standing while a rain of black feathers fall around her.
-All flashback scenes depicting Arisa as a middle school delinquent had her mask color being white in the manga instead of black.
-The scene showing the delinquents spying on Tohru and her friends was depicted after Arisa explained about her first meeting with Kyoko and Tohru in the manga instead of before it.
-The scene showing Tohru and friends getting their meals and Yuki asking Tohru about her mother’s past as a delinquent was added for the anime. In addition, Arisa’s story about how she met Tohru and Kyoko was told while the group were waiting for their meals in the manga.
-All scenes depicting Kyoko as a delinquent riding on a motorcycle at night were added for the anime.
-The delinquents in Arisa’s gang are not shown smoking cigarettes in the anime.
-The bit showing Arisa being bewildered at the thought of Tohru being in the same middle school as her was added for the anime.
-There were more students shown in the anime stepping on the books that Tohru was trying to pick up in the anime.
-Upon learning that Tohru was Kyoko’s daughter in the manga, Arisa was threatening to punch Tohru in reaction to this.
-When Kyoko meets up with Tohru and Arisa, she is shown to be wearing a long-length skirt in the manga instead of jeans.
-Tohru’s line of what she was preparing for dinner when talking with her mother was added for the anime.
-The scene showing Kyoko and Tohru noticing that Arisa forgot her mask was added for the anime.
-One of Arisa’s gang members observing Arisa’s outburst at Tohru was added for the anime.
-Some of the dialogue by Arisa explaining she is content with her life as a delinquent was added for the anime.
-The visual depiction of Arisa’s mother leaving her as a child was added for the anime.
-The scene showing Arisa returning home to observe her father watching TV and recalling her meeting with Kyoko and Tohru was expanded for the anime.
-The scene depicting the three delinquent girls practicing verbal threats and running into Momiji was added for the anime.

That was a deep analysis, I usually don't like people constantly comparing original source to latest source but since you just established a complete list of every difference, that was readable. In my opinion, this is appreciated that they change aspects & scenes in this 2019 version, instead of doing a kind of "graphics lifting".

This 16th episode was still interesting in its latest version, it probably came at time (not too late, not too early).

So last episode was chapters 25-26 and this 2 episodes will be chapters 39-41. That's quite a skip. They better include everything they skipped in later episodes or I will be angry.

About this episode, it's faithful to the manga and it wasn't in the old anime (they skipped Uotani's and Hanajima's backstories). The part after the ending with 3 delinquents and Momiji is a filler, but cute. I guess they need to add something if they are making 1.5 chapters into 1 episode. They expanded some scenes too.

One of the reasons i enjoy this anime so much is because every character is so well thought out and developed and that was proven in this episode. Arisa had such a troubled past so im glad that she has a bright future now.

I also love that Tohru's mum is such a presence throughout the show even though she's passed away... it's a nice way to remind us that even when someone's left us they're never really gone

I've been doing the comparisons since the series came out back in April. I do them more out of curiosity of what differences there are between the anime and manga for anyone interested to know, not to criticize every little detail changed up between the anime and manga.

Great episode, I loved to know more about how Tooru and Uo-chan first met. Poor Uo-chan though, being abandoned by her mother, and having to live with a neglectful and alcoholic father. Pretty much all alone in the world, just "falling" while getting used to bad things because there is no way to change them. It's awful, but I can't wait to see how Tooru and her mother are going to save her. The whole thing with the swimsuit was funny and precious too. That random lady blushing as well while Uo-chan asked Kyou and Yuki for their input was great. xD I agree that pink is perfect for Tooru though, but she would look great in orange or blue too. lol And I loved the scene after the ED with Momiji fending off those delinquents with his German. xD

I can't think of something else other than that Tohru is adorable wearing that school swimsuit, but yes she definitely needs a proper one. Hanajima's swimsuit though, that's the shit!!

So they are gonna look for a swimsuit for Tohru, with everyone. That was too funny... poor guys are so embarrassed. Hanajima is so awesome though, probably one of my favorite characters by now.

Backstory of Arisa this episode about how she got to meet Tohru and Kyoko. I can definitely understand that meeting the person you look up to, not being the person you expected to be, can be frustrating.

That post credit scene was hilarious..

I understand why they decided to put uo's back story earlier. In the manga, uo-chan's backstory took place a year later, in the summer of their 3rd grade, just before the summer house arc. If they put it just like the original manga, it will be in the last episode of the 1st season. And all I can say is, it's a bit weird for a seasonal ending.

Moving it later after the summerhouse arc would be weird too, since the story would already became more serious. Moreover, if they had to move uo-chan's backstory part, it should still took place in summer to match the theme. Hence, it's moved a year earlier in story plot, just before Kisa's appearance that took place in fall, to match the summer theme.

After all, uo-chan's back story doesn't link with any major developments of the plot. So it wouldn't be a problem to move it to the earlier part of the story.

I heard that hana's backstory would be moved to the 1st season as well? I think it's not a problem, too. Same with uo's backstory, hana's backstory doesn't link with any major development of the plot. So I think it can be put anywhere it fits.

Totally didn't think that Uotani would get her backstory so soon, considering the fact that the 2001 version left this out. And also understandsble if this episode were to exist at the last stretch of this 1st season, it would be very weird.

So, time-skip ahead I guess?

Regardless, this episode tearjerked me at the thought of Uotani Arisa's grown environment and the circumstances she has to face being a rebel. And how Tohru's mum completely broke her expectations and that leads to her life being astray. For the most part, it's faithful to the manga counterpart, and with the anime the impact multiples.

Don't miss out the hilarious post-credits. Momiji is such a savage with his German accent.

Can someone please tell me why they skip Kisa story? Kisa was suppose to be next, after the lake episode. I even check the manga (which I have 5 times) to see if I was right and I was. I’m a little mad at Fruits Basket for skipping Kisa. Kisa is my favorite character and I’ve been waiting for her since the announcement of the new series last year. Kisa means a lot to me and I was ready to watch her episode 100 times the weekend (that how much I love Kisa). Plus since this week is 16th episode (16 is my favorite number) it was meant to be. Then I found out that I have to wait longer to see Kisa, I got really mad and annoyed. So can someone please tell my why they going out of order. I thought going out of order was the reason, people wasn’t a huge fan of the original anime.

Dear Fruits Basket, don't try to be funny, you're terrible at it.

Other than that, I get what the backstory was aiming for, but I don't think it worked as well as it should have, or at least it hasn't so far. After all, most of it is pretty damn obvious and easily inferrable from previous episodes (we already knew that she was a delinquent at some point and that her dad is/was an alcoholic, so the only actual new details we got were her meeting Tohru and Kyoko and the fact that her mum left when she was young).

Suppose if there's a benefit to how the earlier chapters of Fruits Basket are arranged, it allows for more flexible arrangement of plots for episodes when adapted to anime form since many of the earlier chapters are there to introduce characters and there isn't much plot development that has to be strictly adhered to for these earlier volumes. Besides, the anime isn't a rigidly faithful adaptation any who considering Momiji was introduced earlier than he was in the manga and the Hatori-focused chapters were adapted pretty similarly to the 2001 anime where they both get explored in the same setting instead of at separate times.

I really liked this episode. I was very focused listening to the story of the beginning of the friendship between Uo-chan and Tooru.
It is amazing the change that Uotani has had since he met Tooru and his idol, the crimson butterfly, Kyoko.
It seems a lie, but being a mother changes you, it's true 😁. Kyoko went from being the most feared and respected leader in a gang to a loving mother ❤.
To wait for the other week for the second part of this story :).

I did not watch the original anime and have not read the manga so I was so elated to see Kyoko Honda is the story!! So much mystery around her and seeing her action brought so much satisfaction.

Uo-chan deserves two episodes. She my other kiss ass tall girl with a big heart crush with Lita from Sailor Moon being the first. I hope Hana-chan get's a two story arc too.

Tohru being the daughter of the former leader of a biker gang will never cease to amaze me. Uo-chan's initial disappointment that Tohru wasn't a fellow biker too was hilarious. I am happy to know Uo-chan is better adjusted in the present and I like we're getting to see that change through actually story - and it seems it happen before Kyoko passed away.

My review for this episode below:

Anyways, this is only the first season, there will be a second or even third one I'm not sure but it says right there in the OP that this is the first season so they can fit most of the story in the manga and take time with it.

Tbh, Uo-chan isn't my fave but I like her. I enjoy seeing her backstory but at the same time, they can't cram it into one episode.

There are many characters that they have yet to introduce that I am excited to see in this new adaptation. Many of them who never appeared in the first Anime adaptation.

I agree. The 2001 anime excluded it imo because it didn’t flow well. To me rearranging snippets of stories are okay as long as it doesn’t hinder the over all narrative. Where did you hear that they’re moving Hana’s backstory to season 1? Just curios. Personally I’m really excited for Kyo’s/Sensei’s part coming up. I’m curious if they’ll split it up as they did Uo’s backstory. I’m just happy they animated it.

I wasn't expecting to see Uotani's backstory to be explained since it appears a bit later on in the manga, but since the original 2001 anime never really covered this backstory, I'm more than happy to seeing it animated at last. =)

Before we dived into Uotani's backstory, we did get to see plenty of girls in the swimming pool at school with their respective swimsuit/bikini. Tohru looked cute in her school swimsuit and Uotani's bikini was sexy and awesome. However, Hanajima's black swimsuit was simply perfection as it hugged her curves beautifully and showed off her nicely-sized breasts, too! =P

The main draw of the episode was the explanation into Uotani's backstory and her life as being part of a gang and regularly bunking off from school and having a poor relationship with her constantly drunk father. She was happy at meeting Kyoko at first, after admiring her past as the Crimson Butterfly, but after seeing her all mellow and relaxed with Tohru, it made Uotani very confused and pissed off.

Her backstory will continue into next week's episode, but there was an after-credits scene with Momiji confusing the hell out of three thug girls that was pretty funny. =3

In the Funimation video on Momiji's accent, you can see two sticky notes on the side of the computer screen. Those sticky notes contain a partial outline of Season One. The sticky note outline was confirmed this past Friday when we got Uo's backstory (and the confirmation that it was going to be two episodes long, the same as the outline on the sticky notes). So, according to that outline we will be getting Hana's backstory this season.

Hana can get it...

I was barely hitting puberty when I first watched Fruits Basket so maybe that's why I didn't notice, but looking back she's always been very attractive. Definitely peeped it a few times in the remake.

As soon as they started talking about swimsuits, I immediately braced myself. Hanajima really looked gorgeous in the swimsuit. I mean, every character in Fruits Basket is attractive in their own right, but Hanajima takes the cake for me uwu

Uo's backstory is nice. Although I don't agree with her past actions at all, I sympathize with her. If anything, her father is to blame for it. I understand you have to grief because your wife left you, but you have a daughter, get your act together ;_;
