Antanaru said: Graphically it's a pleasing breath of fresh air it the landfill of moe and plain shounen/romcom designs but the beginning and the end of the episode left very bad aftertaste. It started with something I came to hate: random battle without a context. This trope can get a pass only if it's intriguing or plain awesome. Here it was just horrible choreography. Man jumping between conveniently placed boats, cutting through cardboard cutouts of people and then fighting in water as if he was floating in the air. That scene screamed it wants to be cool but was just awful instead. Then the end which made me despise the MC. Cretin who doomed his family. His sickly wife, young son and daughter. And for what? To buy a corpse and flex his nonsensical, ahistorical morality. Fucking hell. It completely killed my will to continue watching. You have realistic design, some semblance of brutality and realism in the world but it all gets crossed out but tough guy acting like a moron in every other shounen/romcom series where common sense is banned. Start and finish are two places you really don't want to fuck up... How can you be this dumb? i mean, If you said 10 things you managed to get 11 wrong. You dont even know who the MC is...pathetic. 1- That battle has huge significance both to the story AND character, it was when he deserted the army. As far as coreography goes it was great, soo shut your filthy mouth you fool, what you wanted them to do, to sink to the bottom of the ocean and fight there with the powers of shakra? 2-Yes he made an impulsive decision, but if you actualy thought why he did it you would understand his character, he is a troubled man that wants to reedem himself not a 'high morality' dofus, And he didnt doom his family, did you even watch the damn episode? 3-Realism? All this series does is have a historical setting withoud 'insert magical superpower bs here', are you realy expecting realism from an anime? Only one of those kinds of idiots that claim 'golden age' berserk is realistic would say this one is. |

So you can't expect it to be a study on how Norsemen lived. But even though it's an anime, it still does a great job of immersing you in that world. Second, using TV show Vikings as a source on how Norsemen lived is a big mistake. If you really want to see how Norsmen and Vikings lived you should read a book on that subject. And how are you expecting them to have lived? This is just some small backwater village on the end of the world. People are just living their lives like they have for thousands of years. There's nothing really unique that has to be showed. They mention Norse gods and myths in their conversations. You will see more of that in the future. |

Of the three Last Kingdom would be the best Vinland in the middle and Vikings is probably the worst in actually following history. Also yeah it's a Japanese anime what did you expect. You aren't explaining much outside they speak in Japanese. I don't see what makes a Japanese and Norse character different in any way (humans beings are pretty similar no matter where you look). Also Pagan influence should be growing smaller this was a period of rapid Christianization Leif himself was a missionary to Greenland. I also would like to understand what do you mean by Pagan or Norse vibes a lot very vague comments. Vinland does go more into Christian and Norse beliefs as the series goes on so yeah. |

It'f funny how defensive and imaginative people get if you don't ship their beloved franchise. Don't like it? How dare you compare this to Vikings? How can manga characters not feel norse enough? Vikings is not even a documentary! You must be shipping Vikings! Go read books, because it's obvious you haven't! You should instantly like my show because it will get interesting later in the story! |

One episode in and I am sold. It feels like I am watching Game of Thrones haha. I have no read the manga - so no reference points - but I like what I've seen thus far. I like that the story is trying to be historically accurate - so the inclusion First Nation people of Vinland encountering Leif Erikson is awesome. I am just confused as to why Leif and Thor are back in Iceland - if they settled in Vinlad. LOL maybe I should just keep watching and ask questions later :D I think I will watch each episode and then do some research on the people and actual historic references. |

Oh that's some mindblowing CG/2D mixed smooth action choreography like a hyped game cinematic. WIT competing with ufotable on camera directing & manly action. Fun how the rocking OP gets out of control at the end lol. Good to learn of Norse/vikings history, outside the overused norse myths from game isekais. The gritty manliness balances out nicely with some pleasant osts & Aimer ED Torches. |

We don't deserve Aimer's beautiful voice. We are not worthy. But thanks to her for gracing us with another wonderful ED, nonetheless. Kick-ass OP, too. What the ACTUAL FUCK is this adaptation? I'm blown away, really. Surpassed all my expectations. Finally, a high quality seinen manga is given the highest quality of adaptations. THANK YOU ATTACK ON TITAN MONEY! I'm so happy, but I'm also depressed. This is the adaptation Berserk deserved, as well. A labor of love and passion, instead of...whatever it is that we got. Anyway, this is going to be a fantastic ride. Been a while since I read the manga. |

The episode seemed edgy at times yet it's also tainted by your usual anime gimmicks like tsundere archetype of Ylva and immortal Thors who was shot by the arrow and acted like nothing had happened (the fact that the arrow just disappeared in the next scene and he was able to swim was even more jarring). Other times he was just jumping around like superman. The show tries hard to look dark and serious yet those little details are undemining all the effort. I really hope they tone this nonsense down in the following episodes. Other than that, it actually wasn't a bad intro to the series. I still can't get my way around where exactly they want to go when there is Greenland they were talking about in the west (future Canada then?) but so far it's intersting enough for to watch their journey even further. |

Thors was wearing chainmail underneath and the arrow only pierced through leather jacket he had on top. No, the arrow didn't dissappear - you can see the arrow break and fall off when Thors performed a throw on that dual-wielding warrior - you can literally see that broken arrow fly almost directly into the camera. So they are paying attention to details - it's WIT Studio after all. Mich666 said: Other times he was just jumping around like superman. Is that necessarily a bad thing? Anime allows itself some hyperbolization because it's supposed to be a saga - think of it as being a tale that is told with some allowances to make it more epic for a viewer (that is how sagas are supposed to be - depicting heroes and their feats in the epic manner). |

So they are paying attention to details - it's WIT Studio after all. Dunno about attention to detail, in my opinion it's actually quite the opposite (and my impression of other Wit works is quite similiar) - the arrow has actually broken in half, and literally in the next frame, the part that still remained in his body just disappered, leaving not even scratch on his outfit in the following underwater scene: This was even more glaring because it was basically in the first part of the episode. Also, chainmail doesn't really protect you from piercing power of flying arrow - you would need to wear plate armour. He wouldn't be even able to swim after that. magictuch said: Is that necessarily a bad thing? Yes, it's a bad thing because they are trying to portray real events (even if from legend perspective) while maintaining gritty atmosphere and putting such feats of heroism there they just trigger viewers' disbelief of given scene. It would be a lot better if his jump was toned down a bit (=it's the problem of the animation, not of the actual scene). As I said before, there are some things this series does right (even seeing the next episode which was quite good) but some details like this are really making me think they are not taking it seriously. |

It's not that they are lazy or not taking it seriously - they are doing manga justice, because original material is full of exaggerations when people are getting cut in half with mere swords through armor, horses are being stopped at full speed with a single punch and so on. Manga never aimed for full realism and there are certain characters in this that have god-like powers and stand above the rest. Maybe it doesn't upset me or put me out of the moment in the anime because I am already used to stuff like that in the manga, but there will be a lot of superhuman strength moments in this show, so you should probably change your approach towards this so that you can enjoy this show more - treat it as a legend, an epic saga that exaggerates stuff for entertaining purposes or to elevate certain characters and their feats. As for the arrow leftovers missing underwater (if it didn't pierce it could've fell off during the struggle, but it's not a big deal anyway) or arrows being able to pierce chainmail - the purpose of that arrow bit was not to show how armor works (because, once again, in this show armor and weapons mostly dosn't work how they should've), but to show how desensitised and spaced out Thors was at the moment, how he was just going through the motions while in mind he was far away with his wife and daughter. |

Ok, thanks for the warning, guess I'm kinda more observant to those kind of things and sometimes it's very hard for me to disregard them. But as you said - those are not the most important things in this series anyway and there are other things I care about a lot more (like story or character developement) so I kinda wonder where this series moves next. |

Hands down the best first episode this season. Everything about it is breathtaking, and I've been really looking forward to something with this kind of vibe ever since finishing The Witcher 3 a month ago. I'm probably in the minority for this, though, but I absolutely dislike the OP and don't consider it a good match for the show. At least the ED is good. Looking forward to some more good world-building! |

For now, it's a disappointment. The opening genre is inappropriate to the Norse theme but is not really Norse? From what I've seen, the only thing Norse until now are people's names. Some Norse spiritual allegories are taken literally, which Norse didn't do at all. No Jormungandr is waiting for you in the Western waters. Sorry to disappoint those who take mythology literally and there's no abyss the waters fall into, as the Earth is not flat. The first lie about the Earth being flat appeared for the first time in the Quran. All Pagans knew the Earth was round. It's in the Vedas too. The other inaccuracy that bugged me was the mention of slaves. Maybe this anime can be watched as a stand-alone story, without considering the spiritual, cultural, political and historical inaccuracies. The landscape shots and the visual style in general are very appealing in contrast. |

Now it's true that in the Dark Ages there was a progressive regression but that doesn't mean that it applied to all populations worldwide. Pagan population have always had libraries and places of knowledge that were accessible to everyone for free. It was only Christian missionaries and the likes that went on destroying these places (see the burning of the library of Alexandria and the destruction of all druid academies in Britain and Ireland by pulling them stone by stone to build, you know what, churches). There is also to say that not all population succumbed to regression immediately. Finland, for example, was one of the last countries to fall, ironically. I say ironically because after its fall it became gradually so weak that half of it could be easily overtaken by Russia right before WW2. Referring to spiritual subjects, each civilisation has always had a priesthood, which had the most knowledgeable people in it, and this priesthood always taught the basics of their spirituality for free to anyone. Even after the fall into the Middle Ages, it's not like the people point blank forgot everything they knew. Family and clans exist as such and parents always teach their children their family tradition. Runes were not only a spiritual mean of divination, but also an alphabet used for writing; while Thor's hammer is not a physical object but the representation of the powers attributed to the third rune, Thurs/Thurisaz, the Thor rune. There's a difference between hating an anime and counteracting its weak points. I don't hate this anime. It just disappointed my expectations, like the Vikings tv show. Does it mean I hate it? No. It's enjoyable, as long as it's taken out of context with reality. Most people nowadays think Norse people were barbarians due to corruptions of ancient history by Christian scholars, but how do barbarians win wars, establish a spiritual culture that has existed for many millennia longer than Abrahamic religions and build advanced and sophisticated ships? It requires an advanced culture, science and technology built over millennia. It's disconcerting thinking how people believe the Egyptians to have been ignorant and less technologically advanced, yet nowadays we wouldn't be able to build anything like their pyramids, which may seem simple but architects who studied them have noticed what advanced knowledge of geometry, sound and light physics, and astronomy is needed to build them and certain chambers inside of them. The same goes for other ancient monuments. In substance, you can keep your bias but you can't have discussion with me over ancient history and religion without having a cultural baggage built through years of study that are not streamlined to Wikipedia and outdated history books. And certainly you can't say I hate a certain show just because I'm disappointed because I had different expectations than you for it. Try not jumping to conclusions without knowing other people's background, will you? This is not a page for discussing history, culture, spirituality and the likes. I never said you outright hated this anime - I just called you a hater (people who nitpick fall into this category) because like most people, you came in expecting one thing and had your hopes dashed. I'm into cinematography, animation, dialogue, storyboard writing as well as all around storytelling. This anime has knocked all of those out of the park. Everything they said about Norse mythology could be flat out wrong, that doesn't make it "disappointing" from a pure technical standpoint. This is a loose historical anime, as most tend to be. No different than a movie that is "based" off of a true story but then takes certain liberties and creative freedoms in order to make it more engaging and compelling - anime does nothing differently. You can save your holy crusade for the poor ancient Norse men and women for someone else. I couldn't care less how they were or weren't remembered, because there will always be people within a culture that will fit a stereotype, and there will be people who will shatter it. You'll never be able to have all of the facts. This just comes down to people in general needing to enjoy a show for what it is and not for what they want it to be. |

This anime isn't perfect and it does have its weak points, but what you have argued to me is that you know out of certainty that there weren't any slaves (there were - they were called serfs) among other things. It's because of people like you who don't care about real history and ancient culture, but prefer believing in posthumous slander (slaves and blood sacrifice) added later by people with an ambiguous reputation that the world is in the shape it is today. Keep enjoying living in your bubble and stop bashing people because they have different expectations than you do. Goodbye. We all have expectations, but GOD DAMN yours are so high that it could reach Pluto. I'm gonna have to agree with ChainxBastard here, it's all about loose historical storytelling so that it is understandable and not ambiguous from multi-dimensional extreme historical accuracy. Also a note that the mangaka did his research so the setting is as convincing as possible while also appealing to a lower audience. |

Whether you let it affect your view is your choice but what he's saying should definitely be taken into account. You're just saying the opposite and whining about high expectations. It's dumb. You don't have to let it affect your view (I probably don't think it's as damaging as he does because I'm not that invested personally into the history) but you should accept the reality. Knowledge and accuracy is a good thing. |

I'm not gonna let it effect my view, I care more about a story and characters and how well it is. Historical accuracy does not effect this at all personally. |

very heartwarming ending with stunning visuals, enjoyed the dispute between Thors and Halfdun cause it felt real and mature. 4/5 |

Already loving the ED. Can never get enough of Aimer's beautiful voice. In general, it was an impressive start. Thors seems to be a pretty respectable man but with a lot of regrets over his shoulders. Can't wait to see how much characterization he will receive until the focus shifts to his son. |

I know first episodes are usually highest quality for baiting people, but this looks really good, they take care of it. I never know with historical anime. They usually get boring somewhere in middle, but as somebody who loves history I keep watching them. And i heard this one is really popular this season. Let's see how episode two gonna bait me. Also, vikings from Iceland (probably running to America in few next episodes?) is kinda exotic material, we shall see what it will be. |

Yautja said: Yeah the arrow really bugged me. It's a real shame it just disappeared cause the animation during the beginning of the episode is so smooth and it's hard to believe it was just overlooked.Already noticed a little fuck up. That arrow magically disappeared from his shoulder. Looks interesting though. |

Phenomenal, an episode that keeps you asking for more without sacrificing anything from what it offers, with no ecchi tropes to discard your attention or nothing, fan service means something else here. Very glad to watch something that feels more mature, something that we don't get quite as often on the seasonal scene. It has been displayed that Thors can hold his own in a fight, but a good man rarely lived a long life in these types of stories. This is very, very rare to me, but the opening and ending songs are extraordinary, other themes always tend to take me 4 to 6 episodes to bob my head to them but this one caped my head moving from the first second. |

They literally show the arrow falling out of his shoulder after dodging a strike and throwing the enemy soldier over his shoulder. |

It's been a while since I last watched anime; thought I was over that. Being on break and lazing around a bit I thought it wouldn't hurt to watch an episode of something new for no reason in particular, and damn, this actually blew me away. Fuck. I really liked the first episode. The fight was damn clean, the opening sounds amazing, etc. It has just the right "feeling" to it. Backstory, plot, relationships between characters, ... Welp here we go again |
