Solid OP song!

So Kino is getting pushed around by some guys already this episode. I like how she keeps her cool though. Speaking of cool, I also like how she fought against some of her opponents with her gun and easily wins without breaking much of a sweat.

Intense episode. I'm really impressed at how Kino handles her gun.

I guess this is 100% confirmation now that this is a remake and also, the OP is really nice =o

I remember when I watched this episode in the old anime and how much it surprised me because I didn't expect the events to play out the way it did (Plus it was the first time we got to see Kino just straight up kill someone/be a savage), but for some reason, I felt like the pacing was pretty fast in this version

It's been a while since I saw the original so I'm not that certain on whether or not this version cut anything out but it just felt off in some way.....The tone too wasn't the same but that's because overall, the original had a really mellow tone to it in like every episode, so maybe that's what felt off to me

Still, either way this episode was pretty good and I'm looking forward to seeing more (And hopefully new) arcs....But I'm gonna re-watch this in the old anime now to double check what I said

EDIT: Yup, they rushed the heck out of this.....It was a 2 part thing in the original and was much darker than this....That's pretty disappointing that this new version did this =/

Why? Noooo :(
They skipped important parts
Now Kino just looked like an asshole that trying to ruin that country :(

I guess this is how I should deal with a shortened version of remake :(
Well at least in this version Kino is talking with the dog xD

I guess it's my fault for comparing it to the original adaptation
But I prefer the 2 episodes of the original

Good episode.

Kino was pretty savage in the battles, while I kinda expected Kino killing the king during the final battle. I did not expect the speech she gave to rile up everyone in the country to kill themselves. Makes me wonder if Kino felt it just wasn't worth letting the people of that country live.

The lady in the flashbacks also seems to have had some kind motive for trying to lead Kino to this country even after her husband died because of it.

I liked the prince dude, wonder if we'll see him again at some point.

Wasn't Kino who talk first about the country to the couple? She say in the begining that for a long time she wish to come in this country . Maybe the Wife thougth that it was Kino's fault for the husband death ?

Kino was great in this episode. He forced his opponents to yield. The last guy was pretty tough, but eventually he yielded. Kino was a savage when he killed the king and changed the rules. The king was actually Shizu's father and wanted to kill him after he won, but Kino killed him instead. Shizu has a cool talking dog.

Well, it was interesting to see the differences in how this story was done here from how it was done in the previous anime. I'm disappointed that they cut it from 2 episodes down to 1, causing it to be rushed and lose a lot of what made it (at least in my opinion) one of the best stories from the previous adaptation. But it was interesting to see more of the aftermath this time and get a more substantial conversation between Kino and Shizu, and unlike the original, it feels like they're setting it up for Shizu and Riku to appear again later.

On one hand, this story feels to me like it's placed too early in the series, but on the other hand we don't know what else we're going to see this season, so maybe there's a good reason to have it this early? I did like the little moment that was put in there specifically for people who already know
though (Riku totally knew, hence the little whisper).

Liked this episode more than the previous one. Finally we got to see Kino's skills in use
I found it interesting the mix between ancient roman's entertainment and prussian/german's military. I guess it was this world's way to represent HRE? Or just wanted to show a militaristic nation.
Shizu and Riku are finally here too! The fight with Kino was so cool! I hope we get to see more of them.
Kino's new rule is actually a good one, since only greedy people will kill each other while the others will leave..Ofc I'm not serious, how many random casualties did that rule even make xD

Gotta say i prefer the 2003 version, it felt more interesting.

It had more characterization on other participants in the tournament and even about the King which really showed more depth and insight into that country.

Still it has a beautiful animation and opening.

Having not watched the original and seeing the above posts talking about how it presented this episode makes me a bit sad, knowing this episode could've been a lot better, but... I'm starting to think this series is not about the 'beautiful world' whatsoever...

Yeah the 2003 version added many orginal things.
The new version only left out a big part of the other fights so the the new version is much more faithful to the novels.

The direction is still too basic and the episode felt rushed as hell, but overall, this was a decent episode, especially the "parting" scene towards the end.

Definitely a far better set up in the original. This episode was really bad. You have no sense of the other opponents or their motivations, not even the Prince, there aren't even any fight scenes. Hermes just info-dumps the city's history rather than the delightfully mad puppet show of the king. Nor do you see the conditions of the guards/slaves. Kino comes off as a complete asshole, because we don't know anything about ANYTHING from this episode.

Now Kino looks like a bad guy for technically killing all citizens which clearly don't deserved it.
Unlike the 2003 version, which has established that the Colosseum spectators are the real citizens and the contestants are from basically a slave class who need to win to gain a citizenship.

I won't mention the missing depth of all supporting characters or the how fast the pacing was. I know they need more time slots, but at least can't you guys just let Kino walk away without saying anything. I know Kino is sometimes a jerk, but this is just way beyond.

Watered down, boring, anemic... still no artistry in the shot composition, no sense of peril or danger at any point, and exposition handled in the most boring, flat way possible.

Remember the puppet exposition from the 2003 version? THAT'S the way you handle backstory, not just having Hermes literally tell us the story while Kino makes bullets.

It pretty much exactly how it go in novel though, 2003 version added many original things included those puppet part, not to mentioned that the characters motivation are completely different in novel and this arc just have 1 chapter in the novel, 2003 just prolonged the lenght of the story.

So what? I don't care about the author's original intent, I care about the quality of the show. This show is notably worse than the 2003 version so far.

As much as I prefer the 2003 anime so far, for this particular episode I can also agree that this episode was more faithful towards the novel. Though, it's a shame that they did leave out some of the enemies intentions/some dialogue, definitely making it rushed. Glad that the king looked less of a Ronald McDonald knockoff this time around. Though overall, faithful, but rushed as hell.

The opening was also pretty decent in my opinion.

Why am I reading comments on what Kino did was a bad thing? Did some of you above pay any attention to the episode at all? The King ruled the way he wanted to being a selfish prick after murdering his father and also getting rid of anybody else who opposed him then his own wife could not handle his reign and killed herself and outcasted his own children but the worst part was the people in the city who at first objected to it at first but went along with it eventually even allowing trash that greeted Kino at the gate to the city to make that arena on the basis of fighting/killing other for sport/citizenship.

It was all set when Kino found out the rules, backstory and the condition of stray bullets as he get rid of the King then as victor proceeded to do what he said to the crowd in order to be the next ruler. Everybody there got what they had before (just without a King now) which was chaos but only on a much larger scale and a big prize to participate in just as they enjoyed watching others kill people for sports now they get to do it to one another.

Kino got the worst of it if no one can believe that by his reaction at the lake.
What a great episode.

Is Kino's gender really a spoiler at this point? Hell, even in the original source and original anime it seemed extremely obvious to me. I honestly don't see how anyone can assume otherwise, even the characters in the show. It just feels forced when people assume Kino's gender incorrectly. The way Shizu changed from "Kino-kun" to "Kino-san" was a really nice touch, after Riku whispered the truth to him. Other than that, rushed episode but still enjoyable as a whole.

In the first anime, the Colosseum arc was the only arc that got 2 episodes to allow longer fights. One thing that changed is that in the LN and old anime, Riku never speaks in front of Kino. He only ever speaks to Hermes and they develop a sort of rivalry. Whenever Hermes tries to tell Kino that Riku can talk she just thinks he's crazy. I'm guessing Kino's backstory with Kino and with her master and maybe the Volcano arc will be readapted, but I hope they have more new material than old.

I just want to say that this series is most likely not a remake. The Colosseum episode was meant to just introduce Shizu into the story like how the 2003 version did.

Also judging from the cover, characters that haven't been seen in the original adaptation will be later introduced. They will probably remake some episodes to get some backstory on Kino.

There are 19 Volumes out right now, there is plenty of materials to work with, let's just wait and see how the rest of the series go.

Wow, they managed to take my least favourite story from the original Kino series and make it even worse, and not just because they cut out all the context for Kino's actions (meaning that it looks like she just caused countless deaths for the sake of it).

I'm really hoping this isn't a sign of things to come, because this was an absolutely terrible episode, even worse than I expected from a remake of my least favourite story from the original series.

Kino's reason for killing the king and making up that law, as spelled out in the novels:

“Without a king,” Kino told them, “this land will have no order! So I will decide the new king! Here is my law:
starting now, you will compete to decide the next ruler! Let any adult citizen who wishes to take the throne come forward and do battle for it. The last one left standing will be king or queen! Those of you who will not fight must leave this city and forfeit your rights of citizenship! This is now law!”

For a second, the coliseum fell totally silent as the crowd worked through the logic of Kino’s Law. A few were quick to realize that if everyone fought to the death, there would eventually be a king or queen with no subjects but children, the aged, and the infirm. And were everyone to choose not to fight, again, there would be a ruler without a kingdom. And among those few, some came to the conclusion that their city would remain intact only if they did not fight to the death.

They left out a very important component of the rule that made it logichole-free in the novels : Those who do not want to fight should leave. Now in this version, there is only one reason Kino could have made up such an apparent cruel rule : revenge (which was substantiated in a later scene in the episode)

The main point of the source story is Revenge, but the 2003 version added several dimensions to it by fleshing out the opponents and introducing Shizu early on (the foremost that comes to mind is Motivation, especially because of the question that Kino repeats to all her opponents "Why did you come to this country?")

This was a lot worse than the 2-parter in the old series. And those episodes were among my least favourite in the show.

Even without comparing the episodes, this one felt very rushed and didn't really try to make us understand Kino. The direction and overall tone of the episode is also not as good.

I hope that Shizu will appear later on in the series, as that will at least be different from the older show. Even if it's not as good, maybe it can offer something new and still be worthwhile watching.

Another solid episode for Kino no Tabi, the only con I have to it, is that I already knew what would happen, but still loved it.
This adventure was longer in the original, however, it did its purpose by surprising the audience with Kino's strong and unpredictable personality and marksman skill.

THEY FREAKING BUTCHERED IT! Unfortunately, not unexpected at all. They literally tried to cram 2 episodes worth of content in 1 episode. Damn it Lerche, you should have saved anime...

I know Riku speaks to both Kino and Hermes in the novels, but it was so much funnier in the original anime where he only talked to Hermes and Kino wouldn't believe him afterwards...

The opening is pretty meh...

I thought this episode was complete shit. I don't know what I expected since I didn't want it to be two episodes since it'd just be the same thing as the original but this felt so garbage. I read that the original anime added scenes and that this was more faithful to the LN but that just means that this story's bad. It had none of the impact that the original anime had. The only thing I liked over the original was the death of the king since it was more gruesome. The new rule Kino gave wasn't even the same.
