It was eye-opening to see Yano and Hiraoka's conversation about Miyamori because I understand that not everyone likes the gung-ho visionaries like Miyamori. To us she seems admirable but to veterans she's just someone who hasn't been in the industry long enough to be jaded with all the bullshit production assistants have to go through.

cant agree more with this.

As for the sourness of umeboshi, its pH (a measure of the acidity defined as the decimal logarithm of the reciprocal of the hydrogen ion activity, aH+, in a solution) is about 1.9 while sour grapeflute is 3.3 and lemon is 2.1. The less number means more acidity. Also, umeboshi is salty. I can't believe they were able to eat more than two pieces without any other foods at the same time.

Its great to see Yano back. I'm surprise she knows Hiroaka.

Damn, I have to honestly say that I really cried a bit when Miyamori also started to cry at that beautiful art. It got me emotional.I was laughing when Miyamori quickly rejected Ookura's offer of crying in his shoulder

They really put what reality is. Back then I also think that it was natural for adults to work properly, but a lot of them run away from their jobs. People don't live for their jobs. I can easily relate to that seeing I encounter them in my daily life.

Overall its a great episode. I'm always absorbed at watching this and not realizing how time pass.

This might be early to say but I hope for a second season.

That is sour! Interesting! I tried hard to look up the pH of umeboshi, just to
double-check your value of 1.9. After a lot of work, I failed. However, I was
able to confirm the correctness of your values for the pH of sour grapefruit
and lemon. So it sounds like umeboshi really is extremely acidic.

In North America, we pour tons of ketchup on everything. Like umeboshi, it
is also both sour and salty. But they also add quite a lot of sugar to balance
out the sourness. In any case, the pH of commercial ketchup is in the narrow
range from 3.89 to 3.92. After doing the math, umeboshi has roughly 100
times the concentration of hydrogen ions. Stating it another way, umeboshi
is equivalent to 100 times its volume in ketchup.

In more familiar terms to North Americans, one umeboshi is the same as 20
standard-sized McDonald's ketchup packets.

I think that Hiraoka guy is simply an idealist with dead ideals. From his bitter tone, you could sense a sense of jealousy for Myamori, and if I'm not mistaken he indeed seem to lost his ideals at around his first/second years, it's understanable that not every studio will have positive energy like mushashino and even musashino deqls with gazilion of problems. Hopefully he will open up at one point, he's not an irrepairable stupid like Tarou :p (well I think Tarou is already quite bearable atm lol)

The second part is very melancholic with some magical hallucination flashback (reminds me of some ARIA episode)and a very sentimental BGM at some parts. I think one thing for sure is that just like how musashino make anime, you could feel that Shirobako itself received a lot of love from its creators. That's what make this series very charming.

The thing I admire the most about Shirobako is how much reverence the show gives to the old days yet doesn't relish in it.

Agreed! And it's nice that they talked abut cel animation, especially since not all anime watchers know about it, especially those who may have not seen older anime. The ending looks like they used traditional animation for, but that sounds like a lot of effort. Could possibly be a really good imitation of what cel animation looks like, or it could really be cel animation which I would really praise the anime for showing. Andes Chucky looks like it would be one of those kid's show that I would've enjoyed back in the days. The song was catchy and the characters, especially Chucky, are adorable!

Yano too awesome. I love her professionalism and her chill personality. I mean after her talk with Hiraoka in the car, it's even more obvious how long she's been with animation production. Interesting that she knew Hiraoka, but not too entirely surprising since being in the industry means you'll know a lot of people and will see them again. Like how she was able to get the episode director. But seriously, love how she just went to Titanic, sat at an empty space and immediately started working. Amazing. I wish I could do a job where I am motivated lol.

Also, some funny scenes with Ema making Aoi and Midori try the pickled plums and telling them to do it again XD

Couldn't have said it better myself. As a child of the 90's you could say that I barely caught the coattails of old school cel animation. I still remember thinking that animation back in those days, with all the bright colors and smooth transitions, were already the bomb. The advances that technology have made have made production and animation a whole lot easier and smoother nowadays, but sometimes going back to older animation, you really cannot find that much do differentiate it from the titles that they come out with these days.

Andes Chucky was like a walk down memory lane here, as was the rest of this episode, though this one took us 40 years into the past.... Still, it was meaningful, and the flashbacks on how things used to be done was a real shout out to the studios of the past. It also provided a meaningful message about the passage of time and the changes that happen in life. Not everyone will end up doing the things that they expected when they started out, but we can only move forward, trust our desires and see where that takes us.

Yano coming back was great. I get the feeling that she started in this industry around the time Hiroka did, which would be around 5 years (perhaps they even started in the same studio). In less than 4 minutes, she pretty much steadied the boat for MusAni, and without laying the blame, just went all out and got the job done. Miyamori is so lucky to have such a reliable sempai.

I loved Ema'a quest for the ultimate sour face, but I loved it even more that she forced Miyamori and Midori into the 2 by 4 cell to do it. For a moment there, it looked like some hilarious torture scene.

So many feels this episode. Accidentally bumped my score up by 1.

A thread on Reddit states that Ookura Masahiro is a cameo/homage to Ogura Hiromasa , the art director / background artist for many famous and influential anime like Ghost in the Shell, Jin-Roh, Spirited Away, etc, etc.
That explains the framed works shown on his wall.
And the background that made Aoi-chan cry was really painted by Ogura-sensei.

Agreed!
I was very surprised how naturally she could get in Studio Titanic and have a desk to work there as an emergency helper for the studio. She tried to connect her laptop PC and log in to the corporate LAN of the studio nonchalantly. Even Nabe-P had a talk with the president of Studio Titanic already, it should have been a troublesome and awkward moment for her to get her desk as a temporary helper there but she acted as if all of them there were close friends. And then she asked Hiraoka to make sure to take care of Miyamoi. He seemed unsatisfied with working for anime industry anymore but I guess he would did a good job for them in the end.

She isn't Miyamori's team member, she is a Miyamori groupie. Not to downplay Yano's awesomeness, but she needs a Miyamori type to bring out her talent. Her conversation with the other guy (and it was implied that they were former contemporaries or even lovers) shows this. She is attracted by her enthusiasm, he dislikes her for the same reason (though of course because he once felt the same way he cannot deny her).

Writers, directors, artists, production, whatever. Everyone gravitates towards Miyamori because she has the purest love for animation. For the true artists, she gives them the leeway to engage in art, for the others, she reminds them of their passion for the art, when it comes down to it, while all the other roles garner more accolades, prizes, and attention, the Miyamori type is what is needed to produce great animation. She is the ultimate enabler.

Just for your information.
Did you noticed that the voice actor who dubbed the young Marukawa (then, working as the person of the production desk, and became today's president of Misani) was Kobayashi Yuuuke, who acts as today's Hirooka, the indifferent job-hopping production coordinator?

This seemed a bit ironic and it made me imagine that it could be possible that even Marukawa also had been disappointed with the anime industry, when he was younger before he promoted to the position from an assistant product coordinator.

In other word, Hirooka has still a potential to become a good coordinator, I suppose.

Yano is the total polar opposite of Hirokawa when it comes to attitude. Not to mention both pretty knew each other a long time.
ED (Episode Director) Iketani Hiroshi has 4 decades of exp in painting beautiful art backgrounds!
Enjoyed the oldies part of Murakawa and his old team.
Older Animation uses celluloid... That's new info for other who knows modern anime.

This anime is poetry! Good episode, the narrative has managed to stir my soul; some of the thanks goes to the script, but the other is all about the soundtrack. Narratively there has been growth of the collective really appreciable, to mention also new bonds that are revealed and they give more credit to the plot that manages to have a plant very powerful and well developed in all directions. I feel almost say that Shirobako is love, Shirobako is life. I am glad I received immediately this soul, I spared the regret of not having discovered late.

I think this is one of the goals of the TV series, as Shirobako is in some ways a documentary about the world of animation. This thing I think we can find in each show are looking to achieve the same purpose. I think all of you, appreciate at a certain age the things of the past, whether movable or immovable objects.

This anime is excellent on so many levels, I can't even count it all.

Great nostalgia episode. Who would thought that they actually animate the ending by old means. And to see even old-squad around, realizing not much had changed from those days.. it was great homage to the past.

Liked how Erika saved the day (wonder if they had some love-affair with Hiraoka before as she is very straight-forward and frank when talking to him).

man, what a great episode. It's always awesome seeing the older generations...
young Sugie-san and his future wife!! Ookura too!
Man, there's just something so inspiring about seeing older people who are masters at their craft. They are like walking legends, people who have cultivated years of experience and never gave up on what they loved...I want to be an old master too one day so I can share my wisdom to the youngsters that are burning with passion.

Ookura is awesome... "Life is truly strange. You're just pressing forward, and yet you have so many encounters, and after each one, you see a new world. It's not like I knew where I was headed to begin with. Before I knew it, I was standing right here. That's all."

For me some parts of this episode felt a little disjointed. But all these complaints are washed away by how moving the flashbacks of Marukawa's days at the old studio making Andes Chucky. I loved the design of the abandoned old studio, and I liked the little taste we got of how working life differed back then from the flashback scene. I also like how we're essentially supposed to accept Marukawa is telling Miyamori all of this but it's being visualized to make it more interesting for us. And yet at the end of the very meta depiction of the blizzard scene (which was quite funny) Miyamori is tearing up and actually watching this in a screening room set up by Marukawa. This show is so goofy and I adore it.

My favorite part of the flashback is that we actually see why Ookura feels indebted to Marukawa. His story of personal attachment to the blizzard scene, as well as the beautiful rough background he drew up was moving. And I liked that asshole older background painter eventually warmed up to him instead of being a jealous one dimensional antagonist.

Hiraoka and Yano have some interactions in this episode, as Yano asks him to help her resolve the Titanic fiasco. I liked their discussions which I think made us understand Hiraoka a little bit more and maybe sympathize with why he's such a dick. I also got a warm fuzzy feeling from Yano saying she loves optimistic dreamers like Miyamori. The OTP is back, their rooftop scene at the beginning of the episode was fantastic too. The bags suddenly appearing under Miyamori's eyes when Yano tells her she looks terrible were a thing of beauty.

We get another legendary old animator dragged out of retirement by Yano this episode as well. He doesn't seem as colorful as Ookura but we'll see how his story plays out. I also really liked the scene where Ema has Miyamori and Rii-chan in that closet cell and is making them eat really sour stuff for reference. I saw her giving what looked like an anxious look to Miyamori near the beginning of the episode. Here I thought she was concerned about her obviously stressed out friend. Thought maybe she was gonna step in and help poor overworked Aoi-chan. But nope she was just thinking of how to ask if she could shove sour stuff down her throat, for the betterment of her own art.

On a final note I love all the extra effort they put into the fake animes in this series. As someone in this thread interestingly pointed out, they even got a cell drawn Vietnamese studio to animate that OP for Andes Chucky at the end. Shirobako really is the ultimate love letter to anime, and as an anime fan it fills me with joy episode to episode.

-Scene with Aoi and Erika on the rooftop at the beginning was really soothing. It never occurred to me how much I liked Erika's voice until that scene.
-Andou telling it how it is
-The things that animators do to make their drawings better. Kunogi appearing out of the blue was also hilarious and the facial expressions were on point.
-Turns out Erika knows this Hiraoka person
-Does that scene in the car mean that Erika is also disillusioned with the anime industry
-The fishing hole scene pretty much answered my previous question. It also demonstrated that Erika's pretty connected
-So that's what a cel is
-Wow, actual film reels
-Oh what I thought Marukawa was someone else entirely in the MusaDouga flashback with that full head of luxurious hair
-Sugie actually looks kinda the same kinda
-So the Ookura guy was a MusaDouga employee
-MusaDouga employees voice their dreams for the future as Andes Chucky characters
-The whole segment of the episode at MusaDouga was pretty great and the car ride back to MusAni made the pres seem like the type of person who cares a lot about his employees.
-Yano was pretty capable before, but she's pretty on point this episode
-Aoi's getting a lot of life advice in this episode, and I actually liked that a lot
-I like when they show the finished product after working on it for like most of the episode.

Great episode, best so far.
