Pretty lovely movie I must say, that ending sure was a huge character twist but well the ending was pretty good in general! The nice visuals and animations also made this movie a lot more enjoyable! All in all a pretty sad yet lovely story! 8/10

I was mad as hell that I didn't figure out the plot twist before it was put right into my face. There were SO many hints and I missed every single one. :/

8/10 great movie.

I would've liked to see more of Haru's past, but it was a good movie. I loved the voice acting.

Since it managed to touch my emotional side, I'll give it a 9.

Heart-wrenching story. Pure emotions. Beautiful art and animation. *.*
Enjoyed it at an unexpectedly high level, since the rating didn't promise
very much. Totally underrated in my opinion. From me a clear 10/10.^^

It was extremely beautiful and amazing. I read the manga before watching so I knew what's gonna happened. Though I sobbed along the movie while I only teared up for the manga. The music goes well with it. Dang that plot twist though. ;_;

I think it started out great and interesting but the plot twist was not done well at all, out of nowhere some random dudes are attacking them and then we get to know the truth. Like what the hell is that shit, they should've focused more on the build up rather than the dude trying to cook. 6/10

The concept was beautiful, and the execution was gorgeous.
However, terrible pacing. I never once felt fully immersed in the story. Plot twist came out of nowhere, too, despite some miniscule foreshadowing.

Needed to be better focused for such a short time span. I was hoping for something like Hotarubi no Mori e, but it couldn't reach that level.

What a beautiful movie that was, both figuratively and literally. I was surprised by the plot twist, but I recalled quite a lot of foreshadowing shortly after. In execution, this topped any other anime I've seen that deals with death as a primary theme.

I'm not exactly sure what I should rate this yet... I honestly don't see any problems without being overly nitpicky. I'll have to weigh it out more closely later; maybe I'll rewatch it to make sure I didn't miss anything.

This is bumping the likes of Anohana out of my favorites, in any case.

I was wondering why, in the flashbacks, it looked like the girl was the one about to get on a plane, but it was Hal that supposedly died in the accident. So, I half way show the plot twist coming, but not the full extent of it.

Overall, decent movie. Wish it could have been length to show more of their relationship. Still, not bad for an hour of my time. I'll have to rewatch someday, knowing the twist at the end.

Waited until I got AtA's Limited edition release till I watched this (Which looks absolutely stunning btw)

I hadn't looked into this any further than reading the synopsis on here, which now I'm very glad about, knowing about that twist would have ruined the whole movie for me.
Really liked this, everything but the length was amazing, I just felt it was a bit short and could have done with more time to pad some bits out, leaving some parts of the movie feeling slightly awkward and lacking depth. That twist was really nice though, did not expect that, right up till Hal got punched and started bleeding.

It feels like there are a lot of unnecessary elements in the story. The soundtrack couldn't possibly be any more generic. Lots of dull unatmospheric moments throughout the movie. The idea was interesting at least and I liked the montage of the festival.

It went from an 8 to a 10 in less than a minute.

It was just amazing. I cried like a little bitch. I haven't cried this much since my earlier days in anime.

One of the saddest stories i've seen. In the end, it was Kurumi the one who died, and Hal the one pretending to be a robot because he couldn't bear with the pain of losing her. The animation is stunning, the sci-fi theme is totally well done and the movie as a whole managed to move me and make me shed a few tears. Just beautiful.

The Visuals was great, but Kotonoha no Niwa is still the best.

I like the seiyuus, Junpei and Mio.

And the story is a bit confusing. The plot twist was amazing even though I barely understand it and finally get it at the ending. Nice ED song

The waku subs are a little bit wonky, but still very understandable.

Yeah, agree, decent movie. The end was a little messed up, but the point was, that he got over the death of her beloved...
That's why I like Production IG, they deal with questions about how future development in robotics in this case (technology, politics, society) could affect (help) psychological therapy for humans...
It could be better though, there was some flaws due to the short length of the movie (Hal and Kurumi's relationship development, other characters-his best friend)...

Loved the film, overall. The Japanese are starting to think about robot ethics alot in anime now. Anime in the 21st century, after all.

If you're interested in watching another anime film about robots, I highly recommend "Eve no Jikan", or "Time of Eve" as it is known in English.

Yes, saw that film too. Also very excellent.

I think the thing that confused people about "HAL" is that in the early scenes, the narrator declares that "Hal died". It's kind of a lie that misleads the viewer until that pivotal scene. But still, great film, fantastic visuals. Just got done watching the Blu-ray and watching the director's commentary about the animation. Apparently a lot of 3D CG in there, but well done.

At first, I was against the concept of replacing your loved one with a robot, but as the film progressed it was kind of liking it. It had some interesting ideas.

But then the plot twist happened.

That twist killed this movie. It made everything beforehand make no sense whatsoever. So he became so shocked by her death that he loses his memory and thinks he's a robot? Wh... what? If the robot is suppose to help "heal" him, why did she spent most of the time cooped up in her room crying? How exactly does that help him? And robot therapy? Are you high? Wouldn't it have been easier to just make it so that he believes he's not a robot and that she's still alive, so they live a normal life. I mean, from the looks of it, the robot got her personality and memories down perfectly, and in the state he was in I'd doubt he'd notice (At least not until he finds out the truth, but that would actually lead to a much more interesting movie.) or HELL, just be straight with him, then we'd have the same movie just with the roles reversed, and then the idea of selling the robot would've been a lot more interesting. Also, seeing his loved one die traumatizes him, but seeing her die again right in front of his eyes supposedly makes him feel better? In what fuck up world does that make even a lick of sense? How the hell does any of this teach him to move on with his life?

"I hope Hal finds the will to live." After the shit he's been through, I highly doubt it.

Not to mention it's absolutely unnecessary and felt tacked on for the sake of having a plot twist. There was really no reason to have a twist of any kind in this movie. The film was better when it was telling a simple romance between a girl and a robot. And it wasn't even a surprising twist, either. The idea crossed my mind, but I didn't actually think they'd be dumb enough to actually use it.

All in all, it's an okay movie ruined by a dumb twist. I haven't read the manga so I don't know how it compares to that, but I just didn't like this movie.

This, basically.
Plus the pacing was horrendous.

Other than the animation, there is nothing in the movie worth it. Granted, the music was not as bad as the story but there is nothing special about it.

(watched with friends, they both hated it too... the idea of replacing someone for a robot is just.... ugh)

I am still trying to figure out how Kurumi's body could remain completely intact after the explosion (at the end when the oldies were talking and you could see her corpse lying inside a glass coffin)

6/10 Kind of mediocre. Dat art and plot twist though

Amazing animation and artstyle. I really love the twist at the end. Damn, the back of the movie keep referring to Hal who died, but it was well done! Just wish they didn't show the explosion at the beginning. I think it would have made the impact much more depressing if they showed it at the end.

Much better than 5cm for sure!!!

Give this an 8/10!

I really loved the art and designs, quite beautiful. Characters had lots of emotions and I liked the idea for the story aswell. Somehow in the beginning I hated the idea that a boyfriend dies and she would be happy with a robot for some time. Luckily it didn't go like that at all, so it was a positive surprise.
The end made me wonder little bit, since they didn't explain the so called robot therapy. So I'm guessing here now how he was cured and decided to continue living his life happily.

Well, I liked the movie anyway.
And the old woman with the badass camera was quite funny.

I wonder also, how Kurumi was in the coffin, since the airplane exploded. Or was it an android?
