Anime is known for being extremely violent, the biggest offenders being Devilman, Violence Jack, Genocyber, the Hokuto no Ken 1986 movie, and the most infamous of them all Urotsukidoji. Ofcourse anime has become somewhat tame since beginning of the 21st century there are still some highly violent shows like Hellsing Ultimate. Many anime fans such as me love seeing this kinda stuff but others are very much turned off by it and tend to avoid it. How do you feel?

Depends on how it is presented.

If it's played for laughs, I usually hate it. And if gratuitous, it can become obnoxious and borderline try-hard.

Like it's just shouting at you, "LOOK HOW MATURE I AM!! BLOOD!!"

I think there is no where near enough of it. Honestly every gory show I've seen so far I've pretty much loved.

I remain rather indifferent to it. I don't mind seeing it and it doesn't get my dick up when I do. If it's there, it's there.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

I avoid them if their reputation is for "super extreme bloody gore" and nothing else, as with Shigurui. Much like how the moe haters avoid shows famous for their moe content. Unlike those haters though, I don't whine about the industry producing gory anime or about overseas companies choosing to license it.

I can't say I'm very fond of extreme gore. When it comes to intestines and other internal organs hanging/falling out, it's a bit too much for me. Not saying I can't watch it, but it isn't something I'll watch for personal enjoyment.

Though these days, they're pretty rare. Most recent I can think of would probably be Blood C and I believe Muv Luv has some pretty intense gore.

hehehe i see what you did there

so on topic. i enjoy gore in my anime, not that it NEEDS to be there or that it should take precedence over other things but it's always a nice addition. the first thing that immediately comes to mind would probably be akira and berserk (more so the berserk manga as opposed to its anime adaptation). in both said pieces of work i feel the gore isn't forced at all and actually improved my experience with them. nothing beats flipping the page through a berserk volume and seeing guts cut some dudes head in half in the most brutal and graphic way possible.

I want more gore ^_^. Some people like panty shots and side-boobs I like it when peoples heads implode :( is that so wrong?

I say it's always good, I welcome it when it's pulled off nicely and it isn't just there to be shocking.

Gore can become a form of art (Kenshin Tsuiokuhen) and it adds realism to the death / violence that's being perpetrated by the characters, similarly I like it when characters get scarred etc etc - I think violence should always be portrayed in its coldest most hardest form.

I think news networks shouldn't censor their reports from warzones either - it might make a lot of people think twice about going to war if they actually got to see the nitty gritty of what it entails.

If it's realistic or not that much then I don't mind and think it fits. But excessive gore is just useless and disgusting. I would rather watch shows without gore but for some stories I put up with it for the story..

I like anime with a lot of gore in it if it's done well.Although I don't like people losing 3 liters of blood from a minor wound.

It depends on the anime for me. In the Monogatari series it's funny whenever Koyomi gets into a fight, several of those fights result in him spewing ridiculous amounts of blood to add to the effect of the scene.

I've never really watched anything gory really..and elfen lied was like any other anime I've seen, just with a bit of nudity and blood.

It depends, if it's like presented in a sexual way or an exagerrated way then I won't be able to enjoy it.

Unlike in 3d movies, gore really doesn't bother me in anime. Saying an anime has gore in it, isn't a valid reason for me to care about it. But when used appropriately it can definitely add to the impact of an anime. But even then it isn't so much the gore that leaves an impact but the context in which it is presented. It think it's easier to go wrong with gore than it is to go right.

Funny thing is, it works. Just look at how much Elfen Lied is praised.

Depends to what extent it fits the styling of the anime, elfen lied I feel like it went overboard (overall pretty poor anime regardless) however from what I've seen of Berserk, the style is very fitting so I enjoy the way it goes with the story.

Gratuitous gore doesn't bother me, but I don't like it when it's clearly just being used for shock value or when it's all thrown at you at the end of a series rather than extreme gore throughout the whole thing. I.e. Blood-C, Another.

Very much this.

I don't particularly like it, and usually prefer not to have it, but if it is actually used to enhance the story then I applaud the author(s).

Like I said, it does work and does help at overration. Elfen Lied.

Still, Gore is bad when Blood> Plot.

I like gore, just not in a sadistic sense. For example someone getting their eye stabbed with scissors or their tongue cut off isn't entertaining to me. When it comes down to it, how much gore there is depends on the genre if it's comedy an it's supposed to be funny then I hate it.

I agree with the "someone getting their tongue cut off isnt entertaining"

I think if someone is getting hit in the face or they are fighting then there should be blood. Like claymore or berserk people getting cut in half and what not fits the tone fo the both of them perfectly, so if there was no blood it would seem a bit retarded xD

Elfin lied is bad gore i think, probably because i don't like the series, but oh well xD

I have a similar question, and hopefully this doesn't derail the thread or anything..

But how do you people feel about a lack of gore?

The Tiaga gif avatar made me think of this one, so thank you jimbob1141 lol. But anime with tsundere characters, although it's not exclusive to tsunderes, tend to have a lot of physical violence, specifically with the main protagonist being the victim.

But this violence is usually done for comedy, and the "gore" is kept to a minimum, replacing things like fractured bones, facial bruising, split lips, black eyes, concussions, internal bleeding, etc, with cartoony bandages, bumps, and hand prints.

The affect is, in my opinion, distasteful, as it creates a facetious outlook on physical domestic abuse. But I want to know your opinions. Thoughts?

I think it really depends. Some violence comedy is really light-hearted, and others just plain wtfery.

But the oddest one are when we see the characters getting beatup to a unberable level and the wounds looks minimum, like the characters are made of plastic.
