I actually liked this episode. This was one of the very few episodes where the characters actually had personalities.

Overall, this anime had extremely shallow characters with minimal development. Looking back at it, you can ask questions like "What do Yamato or Mei do in their spare time?" and there is no answer. That's how underdeveloped the characters were in 13 episodes. They should have shown the lives of the characters more instead of wasting time on empty flirtatious small-talk between the main couple.

I thought it was a cute episode, but we never got to see Mei verbally tell Yamato "I like you." So I was a little disappointed... I'm hoping that means there will be a season 2! (>ω<)

Ok.... that was pointless. They've squeezed about 30 chapter into 12 episodes, only to use this useless episode as the final, instead of what we've seen in episode 12? Awesome idea. Not.

The episode was not bad, it just felt incredibly pointless, because episode 12 already felt like it was the end and then suddenly we get an episode that has nothing to do with what happend before at all. I think this felt very filler-ish.

It was a nice episode but it really didn't work as an ending. There was absolutely no sense of conclusion. Far too abrupt. If I didn't know better, I'd be expecting another episode.

That being said, the series was nice. Usually, I don't like series like this but this was pretty cool. I'd give it something like 7.5, mostly because of the male MC being too good, too perfect. I don't like perfect characters, they're too predictable and I can't relate to them. But gosh, I loved the female lead. A joy to watch.

Been waiting for this kind of anime for some time now, a pure romance/relationship show that is just awesome.

First thing that comes to my mind is Kimi ni Todoke that is using the same kind of themes, and cos KnT is just epic :D

Overall, I really enjoyed watching this and wish there will be more in the future.

This an edited version of a reply that I sent to a friend on MAL as well as some Extra bits:-

I finished off Sukitte Ii na yo and then read your spoiler and I completely understand, it's sort of funny because earlier today I came across a review for Sukitte Ii na yo saying how "realistic" it was, to a certain degree I believe this to be true except for Mei and Yamato's relationship, the series is pretty much a fantasy, a dream of a female mangaka (who didn't get laid until much later in life or had a shitty school life).....pretty much escapism.

I honestly didn't care for the 2 main characters, KnT's Sawako is more awesome than Mei imo. I felt Sawako's character grew more over the series (only watched the first season and read some of the manga...so I have no idea how S2 is like) or so I think....don't remember much tbh.

The characters I cared for were Kai, Megu and Aiko. I'm totalling shipping KaixMegu!!

I enjoyed the series because of these characters but I also realise the show grew weaker and weaker as it progressed to the next episodes. The misunderstandings were frustrating to watch but I believe this is what a certain part of the female crowd love to see and this show caters for them.

I hooked up my laptop to my dad's tv....it's 60', watched Initial D Battle Stage 2 and the last 2 episodes of Sukitte Ii na yo, it's so awesome to watch it on the big screen.

Certain areas of this show are depicted realistically but it doesn't extend to the logic of the series or the 2 main characters.

But here's the thing, I don't know what to rate the show, a 8/10 or a 9/10......I bet you're thinking that's too high but I did enjoy this show, it's just the weaker aspects of it are making it harder to choose and I generally rate highly, which is absurd but I don't have the heart to give most shows a low score.

~~End of Reply~~

The OP was okay but not memorable but the ED by Suneohair is great.

The last chapter of the manga I read was 20 something and I just found out that the scanlators have been ferociously releasing the chapters and are up to chapter 34, so I've got to play catch up now.

There are a few differences between the anime and manga, such as the phone call Yamato gets at episode 11, that doesn't happen in the manga as far as I know.

Nonetheless, the anime seemed to have followed the manga decently enough and has set it up for a 2nd season to be possible but since there's a lack of material for a season 2 announcement coupled with the image shown at the end of episode 13, practically spells out "The End" for the anime series, it even said in the final image shown at the end of episode 13.

My score for this series is a 8/10, I would given it more if the series had more MeguxKai moments.

Boring. Predictable. Ended proving that the characters are indeed hollow and idiots. One of the worst romance I have seen. It just doesn't have feeling to it. A parody of how a good romance should have been.

4/10 For this Series.

This felt like some sort of OVA to me, but it was quite enjoyable nonetheless, it was more comedy based that other episodes though. I noticed one really obvious fault with the animation though. At 14:29, Nagi is wearing socks while on all the other scenes she's wearing a legging. How could CQ miss that? Is it some sort of re-used scenes which they forgot to change? Overall the show was really enjoyable, although the story and characters were kinda lame when I thought about it. 8/10.

Say I Love You really let me down with the bullying aspect. It's a shame Mei talked Kai out of getting revenge on his bullies. This show would have been highly more entertaining if it were about Kai getting revenge, and genuinely being awesome. Too bad. Still, he was the best character.

Otherwise, your standard typical shoujo fare. Mei suffered from some character de-evolution once she became so dependant on Yamato. Her personality was much more interesting in the first episode, and really, you don't just get over your trust issues so easily like she did.

All in all, I'm glad I watched Say I Love You because of Yuu Kobayashi. She's barely been getting any roles lately, and I miss her. Mei's mom was really cool, too.

I hate these misunderstandings... and then that's the plot for the original ending episode... The characters felt relatively OOC, too. Well, through the last few episodes I found out that the original is much better at handling this (although that's not actually unexpected, either) after I read the respective translated chapters after the episodes rather than knowing what happened before from the manga already, but this was a bit disappointing as well...

If you watched to the very end, she did in fact say "suki"/"I love you," so... in the end it was satisfying. I'll admit I could've done without the episode full of misunderstandings, but at least we got more Nagi, which is never a bad thing~

Oh, it's just an OVA of sorts? Well that was pretty good as well.

For the first 12 eps, i like the story, also the characters, development was the strongest since there seems to be closure for all the characters, like a god epilogue. Haven't seen this since Ano Natsu de Matteru.

9/10.

liked the previous episode WAY better as a last episode, this just seemed to me like an OVA or something like that, so will pretend that 12 is where it ended and this was just an added episode xD

bit cliche too but i can get past that... just!

overall good series, to say im not usually a fan of romance, this was very watchable for me, and at no point felt like dropping it nor did it bore me.. then again I wouldn't say it excited me too much nothing new was brought into the mix!

This last episode really summed up every arc of the show in a nutshell for me: a couple with zero communication skills between them encounter a silly misunderstanding taken way WAY too seriously and caused by a jealous outsider, which causes unnecessary amounts of drama between our two wishy-washy, boring leads. They make up. Repeat.

Sure, the previous one felt more like a last episode, but I think it was still a nice way to top it all. It was a very funny episode, though also kind of frustrating :D I like that they didn't forget about the name of the anime after all with that ending :)

Now for why I didn't like the anime as much as I wanted to.
The biggest problem was the amount of 'people wanting to ruin their relationships'. I mean 1 or two love-triangles are fine, but it felt like a new challenger appeared every episode. They focused too much on them instead of the main couple. Sometimes this made the show predictable and boring in a way :/
Another problem was that I often felt like that after around probably ep5 Yamato got somewhat dumber. In the previous episodes I liked that he seemed like he knows what could hurt a girl and what to look out for, but as soon as Megumi appeared he forgot to think about how appearing with her in magazines and going to her house for fucking dinner could hurt Mei. I still like him though, don't get me wrong. But some things he did really made me get a little mad. I also get why Mei can't trust people as much as she would like to due to her past experiences, but Yamato not being able to trust her (the thing about Kai and Mei) after everything that happend was a bit unrealistic imo.
I liked most of the characters though. My favorites were Mei > Yamato > Asami > Nagi. I don't really feel like they were as unrealistic as I hear from a lot of people. Mei's shyness and things like that are actually very realistic given her past. I really liked her and Yamato's development in becoming very caring partners for each other :)

The show would have needed a lot more attention to the love between our couple and far less 'people wanting to ruin their relationships'. It made the anime a bit boring and tiresome at times. As such (and for some minor problems I haven't mentioned), I'm gonna give the anime a 7/10. It was good, enjoyable and their love was beautiful, but it could have been far better :/

I never thought I'd marathon this really bland romance series. Beautiful animation, nice soundtrack, great OP/ED songs, and an almost completely uninteresting story and characters. It hurt watching this anime ruin its potential just because of the story. Also, this episode should have been swapped with the previous one. Episode 12 was a better ending. More memorable, too.

I can only say it's disappointing. It looks like their friends have no life except worrying about Mei. Misunderstanding, problem with visiting him and the most the sudden advice club felt simply staged? It's not problem of this single episode Whole show feels unrealistic, main character is troubled so suddenly some friend "happen" to appear and give him/her advice. Especially in letter part of the whole show it's become visible that except two main characters whole cast is shallow and they whole reason to exist is to "happen to" be in place that would help main cast.

And would it really hurt if she actually say that "I love you" at the end?

6/10

The problem I had the most with this one was how characters would come and go so very conveniently, not only that but Mei's bullying problem just seems to go away, just like that, after the first 3 episodes. The anime conveniently ignores certain characters in order to pave way to do what many other romance animes have made into a standard for romance shows these days, they try too hard to be what they are not..mixing many different memes and different problems into one show, all while telling a love story.
If they had just stuck with the relationship between Mei and Yamato, all while dealing with her bullying problems it would have been a much better show.

I also found it funny that despite all the drama they went through, even in the end they still fail to understand each other at all.

5/10....it's just too average of a romance show for me to give it anything higher

Finsihed it, it was alright I guess, wasn't as cliche as I thought it would be but it still had quite a few.

It was pretty slow and boring though. I was actually surprised at how boring the main character is, I've seen alot of these types of anime but I've never known a main character to be so boring.

She wasn't a bad character just boring and it was also weird how she didn't seem to have alot of screen time for a main character. She felt like a secondary character alot of the time.

I had put the manga on my Plan to Read but I took it off, the anime wasn't good enough to make me wanna read it.

Oh and the last episode and the way it ended was dreadful. It was like it was a tacked on episode and 12 should have been the last one.

Unfortunately, my rational side, requires me to give a vote remeber a little while feeling his heart speed up the beat in the final, but ultimately you tell me or users sentient, what gave you more epispdio this? I can take the idea that they wanted only lgi authors stressed the concept of the words written at the end namely: Say "I Love You" and nothing more. Narratively if you favor you can think of: What bad luck has Mei.Nel the worst case instead of thinking: this anger Mei!
Design and animation of an adequate standard.
Rating of 3/5 more than suitable, at most I would have given it 4/5!
I hope the movie gives a little more! * _ *

Good adaptation of the manga. Though of course, there were a lot of scenes they did not included, well, 13 episodes is really short.

Still, I expected that in this last episode, they will feature that important part in manga. Hoho. Oh well, still great for me. 10/10.

LMAO so many misunderstandings in this show. I'm thoroughly entertained. I laughed when they PASSED BY EACH OTHER.. THE PHONE SCENE HAHA. I love cliche Shoujo.

I'd be interested in season 2. Well, I'm gonna watch the OVA tonight.

--

Edit: Okay proper final thoughts! So, I actually dropped this show in episode 9 but then picked it up and finished it recently. Definitely worth it. This show shines in some aspects even though, it doesn't in others. It's way too cliche at times and picture perfect (like the way everything works out in Mei's favour) but also presents interesting characters like Megumi and Kai who I enjoyed seeing them grow. I'll stick to a 6/10 for now, but I liked some parts of it for sure. More Takahiro Sakurai and Tomoaki Maeno is better.

This last episode was a fun little ep full of misunderstandings and that was a nice way to end but I still can't help feeling it would have been better to make this an ova and either make the series only 12 episodes or put in another episode between Mei and Aiko, I still feel that wrapped up way too smoothly.

I liked this series. It didn't lag, although it was perhaps a little fast at times. The characters who were creating trouble did have a way of really annoying me but their character development was enjoyable. I think I'll definitely have to read the manga and see what the anime couldn't fit in.

Pretty lovely ending of this wonderful series and well this last episode sure was lovely as well to make the whole series round off quite nicely, I do wonder what the ova and the specials have to offer but well I do have to say that I've loved this whole series quite a lot, it had some great development and a nice pace with sad and hearth warming moments that on top of everything the ending was just way too lovely where she finally says she loves him!

Either way let's see what the ova has to offer! +9/10
