A new television anime adaptation of Hiroyuki Takei's Shaman King manga series was announced by Kodansha on Friday, scheduled for an April 2021 broadcast. The new anime series will be based on all 35 complete edition volumes the company will begin publishing on June 17.

Synopsis
Shamans are extraordinary individuals with the ability to communicate with ghosts, spirits, and gods, which are invisible to ordinary people. The Shaman Fight—a prestigious tournament pitting shamans from all over the world against each other—is held every five hundred years, where the winner is crowned Shaman King. This title allows the current incumbent to call upon the Great Spirit and shape the world as they see fit.

Finding himself late for class one night, Manta Oyamada, an ordinary middle school student, decides to take a shortcut through the local cemetery. Noticing him, a lone boy sitting on a gravestone invites Manta to stargaze with "them." Realizing that "them" refers to the boy and his ghostly friends, Manta flees the terror. Later, the boy introduces himself as You Asakura, a Shaman-in-training, and demonstrates his powers by teaming up with the ghost of six-hundred-year-old samurai Amidamaru to save Manta from a group of thugs. You befriends Manta due to his ability to see spirits, and with the help of Amidamaru, they set out to accomplish You's goal of becoming the next Shaman King. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

The supernatural adventure manga began in Weekly Shounen Jump in 1998 and ended abruptly in 2004 with 32 volumes. A 27-volume reprinted edition of the manga ran in Jump SQ. in 2008–2009, featuring the series' "true ending." Takei drew a two-volume prequel titled Shaman King Zero from 2011 to 2014, and the Shaman King: Flowers sequel between 2012 and 2014 in Jump X.

A 64-episode television anime produced by animation studio Xebec aired between Summer 2001 and Fall 2002. 4Kids Entertainment formerly held the anime's license in North America and produced an English dub. Funimation released five uncut DVD volumes from 2004–2005.

VIZ Media published all 32 volumes of the original manga in English between August 2003 and January 2011. However, the company no longer holds the license for the series. Kodansha acquired the Shaman King trademark from Shueisha in December 2017.

Shaman King: The Super Star, the new arc in the manga series, began its serialization in Shounen Magazine Edge in May 2018. Kodansha will publish the fourth volume on June 17.

A Shaman King remake!? In the vein of Hunter x Hunter 2011, Fruits Basket or other anime remakes based on manga!? I don't know what to say! I did not expect this at all! Holy shit!

I KNEW there was a reason they were suddenly reprinting the manga! I was SO suspicious when that was announced out of left field for virtually no reason.

AMAZING NEWS! Next year is gonna be LIT. First Bleach anime makes a come back and now this.

Shaman king was OK. Nothing incredible.

But still I hope we get more reboots cause they adapt the whole manga usually.

It’s a “Completely New Anime Adaption” and so the chances of it being a reboot is pretty high.

First forum post I make in 6 years, and it's just to say how insanely hyped I am for this. That first anime didn't do it justice whatsoever.

My childhood crush is back <3 Anna

Please don't ruin this whoever is adapting it.

Holy... I'm very excited, I always wanted a Shaman King: Brotherhood type of remake. I loved the original anime, but the manga story was even better after the point of divergence.
I'm also afraid whether they are going to achieve the same feeling of the original (along with music and visual effects), but I can only hope. Another question is how much episodes...? It really needs at leas 64 like the old one and FMA: Brotherhood to be able to adapt everything.

I remember Shaman King being one of my childhood anime, nice to see it coming back.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

Take me back to the days before MAL became infested with Twitter's favorite buzzwords.

i don't really like the series, but i hope this adaptation success, because mangaka venture after the end of shaman king has been sad.

Crunchyroll said:
According to the official website for the franchise. The series is announced to adapt all 35 volumes of Hiroyuki Takei's famous manga, similar to how Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or Fruits Basket revisited their respective franchises many years after a first anime project that completed before the manga was able to provide the canonical ending.

Dang, this may have to make my top 5 most anticipated anime coming up. I wonder if they'll also try to adapt any of the spin-off/sequel manga.
