In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Hiroyuki Takei's Shaman King manga, a website has been launched to announce that the series will be resuming with a new story. Takei will pen the new chapters, which are to be published in Kodansha's Shounen Magazine Edge in Spring 2018.

Takei drew his original Shaman King manga in Weekly Shounen Jump in Summer 1998. The series ran for a total of 288 chapters before ending in Summer 2004. A reprinted edition was published in Jump SQ. between 2008 and 2009 and featured the series' "true ending." Studio Xebec adapted the manga into a 64-episode TV anime, with direction by Seiji Mizushima in 2001.

4Kids Enterainment formerly held the anime's license in North America and produced the English dub. Viz Media licensed the manga and published the original series between 2003 and 2011.

Looks like this series is among the ones that just can't rest in peace.

Shame that the author turn down the offer for new anime series.

And the offer was? As far as I know, the anime covers almost all the manga, and the sequel is too short for the adaptation.

No, it is not. The anime had an original ending and went a different route than the manga.

Lol, I wish he would just stop milking this series already.

If he wanted to milk the series, he would have accepted the anime offer. From what I have seen, there is no new media of the series unlike Naruto and Dragon Ball.

No, i think that there is plenty of source left.

That news is old, he turned down it because they cant use the same voice actors and same music composers for the new series.

They wanted to do a remake. Anime diverged from manga like halfway through with completely different story, so sequel was not even a possibility.

What's this "true ending"? I only remember reading the shitty, cut-off-in-the-middle one. Unless that IS the true ending and there's an even worse one floating around somewhere? Huh. You're getting one more shot Takei, don't fuck it up!
.

In 2009 the manga was re-released and the author got to add 17 new chapters which gave the series a proper closure. It's actually pretty good.

looking how many rage around this series, glad i am not really found of it when it was aired back then in my country... might found reason to read it, but very unlikely...

Now if only Yakitate Japan could get this treatment. Please give that author a chance to unfuck that ending a little, too.

Takei is confusing. Why he doesn't go off and make another good series is beyond me.

Double shame. I know it's not that old but it could use a reboot HxH and FMA style. I'm sure it'd get hype with the right studio.

"Why more chapters? Even the sequel it already has was unnecessary... " A new manga was the best option for this author.

Why more chapters? Even the sequel it already has was unnecessary... A new anime was the option for this manga but oh well.

So that's "big announcement" huh?
Damn it, I thought it's another TV series!

Hmm... Previously Rurouni Kenshin is continuing but it is on hiatus now..
Now Shaman King is also continuing.. Please don't let it on hiatus right after continuing it... XD

I like the original cast, so I would've prefer the old cast even though I know one of them passed away. But a new cast for a reboot is still ok though, but I still prefer keeping Yoh's VA. Wish there will be an adapation in the future though hardly unlikely....Guess I need to catch up on the manga. Glad there are new chapters which means more to read.

A re-made anime with the same cast and soundtrack? Lol talk about unrealistic. I guess he figures a new story is the best way to continue it.

Oh, it's sad for me to hear it. But what did he mean by "another chance"? What kind of studio can still agree to the old cast? I understand his thoughts as a fan of the series, but this is impossible for objective reasons.

Yeah i know, i like the series too, i really wanted another anime of it.

Well, now I would like to see at least a sequel. Of course, many of those people who watched only anime would be surprised to learn that in the original manga Anna was pregnant all this time (in 13-15 years, yes), but it is worth it.
