Maybe: Guy dresses as girl = being more vulnerable = awakening girls' maternal instincts = increases girls' sexual attraction to guys? |

It's a general thing in Japanese media it seems where "contradictions" are valued. One will notice for instance that in most media the super powerful bad-ass character always looks like that whereas in Japanese media they like to play with this expectation and often make the shorter, weaker looking character more powerful. Dragon Ball does this constantly to the point that the viewer has come to expect the weaker looking character to be really powerful. There are many common tropes in Japanese media like "tundere", "trap" that all seem to derive their appeal from "combining contradictory elements". The cuter look a character, the harsher his personality; the smaller be a character, the higher his power level and so forth. |

I guess girls like it when the guys are showing their more feminine side, or when the guys are embarrassed by their crossdressing. It kind of makes you feel you're more intimate to the person after he has shown you his vulnerable side. Asian women tend to be more positive about androgynous men (Shoujo heroes often have androgynous appearance, so do many J-Pop and K-Pop stars.) Possibly androgynous men feel less oppressive to the women who live in a pretty patriarchal society. East Asia also has a pretty long tradition of man dressing up as woman on stage, but I don't know how much it has effected popular culture. |

Possibly androgynous men feel less oppressive to the women who live in a pretty patriarchal society. East Asia also has a pretty long tradition of man dressing up as woman on stage, but I don't know how much it has effected popular culture. In American media males are hardly ever marketed for their looks; they're mostly marketed as a power phantasy to other males. Why? because "androgynous" is just a fancy term for "pretty" — as in smooth, perfect skin, youthful, healthy features and all that stuff. No man considers Rambo or James bond "pretty"; the character is not created for aesthetics but for a power phantasy. If you say look at Twilight or female-marketed romcoms the male lead yet again is marketed for aesthetics and looks "pretty" which is is a fancy term for "androgynous" because any male that applies foundation and facial creams to get a perfectly smooth skin will automatically be called "androgynous". It has very little to do with actual "feminine" facial contours and bone structure as much as it just has to do with a perfectly smooth skin and youthful, healthy features. |

Clothes are just clothes, anyone should wear what they like without separation by gender. I don't particularly enjoy it as a trope in anime, but if guys can pull it off looking gorgeous or cute then why the hell not? It's so last century to think that only girls can wear dresses or even try to look cute. I want to see cute and beautiful guys too, there is nothing wrong with it. |

And don’t get me started on traps in anime. 99% of the time, the only thing to them is their crossdressing gimmick and nothing else. Oh, and the memes are annoying as shit. Often in drawings a character's sex is essentially just what they tell you it is. A lot of these "traps" they could have just told one the sex was the other one and one'd be none the wiser. |

I don't mind it in real life, the very few ones I met were confident, fun people who pulled it off nicely. Did I find them especially attractive or cute because of what they were wearing ? No. Did I like them less because they were crossdressing ? Hell no. I probably just liked them more because of their fearlessness XD I do not like the anime version of a redfaced, embarrassed, stuttering mess of a crossdressing guy ( who was probably forced into doing it ). One example of a character I liked much would be they guy from Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens. |

Why is it that they are attracted to that? Why is that cute and something they want? I have no clue why people find transgender trap cute It's not too dissimilar to: "Some throwaway comment says they're siblings? that's automatically more hot." Having said that I do believe that for a certain look "boys make the cutest girls" or at least that body type. I find that "feminine" curves just don't work with a particular look as the one I posted above. Were Nagisa to actually have large mammaries or wide hips there it would surely ruin it. Clothing like that simply works the best on a body type that is most common with slender teenage males. Edit: Actually, so think I more about it — it's actually the exact same body type that is also featured in FtM traps which also typically exemplify "girls make the cutest boys". Most of these characters design-wise are interchangeable and the sex is just whatever the author tells you it is; it could be either but androgynous features are inhærently cute for being youthful; androgyny is inhærently the underdevelopment of secondary sex charactaristics which makes a character look cuter. In that sense the cutest characters are of course those with absent or poorly developed secondary sex charactaristics even if they look old enough to not qualify as a loli. |

I'm a straight, cis-gendered male and most of the anime I've seen has been in the last three years. I personally find it interesting and intriguing to see characters dress as the opposite gender, and for the longest time I really couldn't tell you why. I have no desire to look or act or feel feminine, at least not really... Recently I may have partially worked out the answer. It has to do with the notion that how males and females dress, what types of clothing are supposed to be for men and what type for women, what colors are encouraged for one gender and discouraged for the other (e.g. pink), hair styles, grooming, and even behavior, are all artificial social and cultural constructs that have little objective basis and are largely nothing more than tradition. What's wrong with men wearing dresses or skirts? Why shouldn't men wear pink? It doesn't have much to do with dressing as the opposite gender. It's more a belief that rules that dictate that men and women should dress in certain ways are just stupid and arbitrary rules. And when I see anime characters who don't follow those rules, I want to cheer them on for 'sticking it to the man' of gender conformance. |

I also have another fine one: It was quite common up till the late 19th century in European cultures to put young males in dresses; the left one is none other than future American præsident Franklin Delano Roosevelt by the way. |

not sure if this relevant to this thread but I'm going to say this anyway. I'm a fujoshi fan of shounen ai, but I surely don't like traps/guys dressing like girls or male characters that look exactly like girls except he has dick. So I don't really know. I think there are many ppl like me. I mean, "bara" is a thing between fans of BL. Bara meaning yaoi that involve super macho and muscular men. While I'm not really into bara, I prefer manly men over traps. |
