Yup, they gave Maomao and Jinshi to bond one more time this season. It was inevitable after everything they've been through in this arc. They just had to be interrupted again from a kiss...

Seems like this episode is more about reflecting than a big conclusion. Maomao in the end is still the Maomao I know. What a season this has been. The past few episodes were a rollercoaster of emotions and imo, this season is still solid as the first one.

Sequel announced

Crazy way to end the season with all this Maomao and Jinshi greatness. Was missed in these episodes where they both were apart from each other. Nice to see Maomao genuinely caring and worrying about Jinshi there at the start of the episode. Seriously, one of the best dynamics to come out of anime in a minute with these two. Just a lot of great moments between these two here in this episode. Couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the season off.

Overall, in places I think this season was a bit weaker than the first, but in most area I’d say it was mostly the same peak Kusuriya we’ve come to expect and know, so yeah please keep the seasons coming, there’s plenty of material to keep going here.

At last, and I say at last because, whenever they’re having a conversation someone or something interrupts. Those 5-6 mins we had where Jinshi and Maomao got as intimate as the literal meaning of the word goes, just not physically but in a way where you could say the whole time they were separated from each other did its damn job, was quite possibly the best ever “breathing space” someone could have after going through that much. Though I’d have loved for a kiss or something of that sort there, but of course, the interruptions ain’t leaving us in that regard..:(

You see, this episode was a BIG EPILOGUE for everything which has happened in all of 47 episodes before this. We see kids waking up..because of course, Maomao AGAIN leaving the palace and most of all Maomao losing contact with yet another of her friends, Xiaolan. Never expected Maomao to shed tears for something like that, but yeah, they were true friends, weren't they? This feels like the ending of one thing altogether and start of a new thing.

Wouldn’t have asked for a better ending tbh. Seriously, this is just that kind of series. At the start of this season it felt like nothing was happening, and then yeah when the stuff started, felt like there was no stopping stuff happening. Love this series, and loved this season just as the first one. I’d very much want a third season… I mean we all do, right? So fucking glad we're getting.

Tho what was my guy doing here lmaooo

Also yeah, of course Loulan is alive. Such characters just never die lol xD

After quite the heroic feat and the posthumous event of Shisui/Loulan's loss, Jinshi only has one thing in mind: to make sure that Maomao is alright...and kiss her at the same time as well?

Jinshi earning quite the deep scar from Loulan herself, and questioning Maomao of how close she, Shisui/Loulan (and Xiaolan at that) got together as friends, though by the end of this event, it's clear that Maomao is on a trajectory path to fulfill what Shisui needed her to do. Otherwise, it's the cat's chastity that Jinshi is worried about, as much as he's being forward to her that only awakens memories of his frog moments with her. However, them getting interrupted by one of the dead children who seemingly still has a pulse from the resurrection medicine, and this invokes an emergency to save the other children, even bringing Suirei for that matter for extra help.

It's back to the rear palace after all's said and done for the New Year festivities, as Gyokuyou becomes the main Empress, Maomao's father being reinstated into the rear palace as Maomao moves out to settle back at the pleasure district with the children being alive and well, as well as Suirei. that however, Kyou-u remained with Maomao under a different name. Seki-u bringing both Shisui and Xiaolan's letter to inform her of how they're doing, of which the latter is no longer at the rear palace as well and working separately on her own, and the former, with all that's happened, having gone completely missing.

Of course, Maomao can only do her apothecary duties, as much as Jinshi has a lot to deal with the aftermath of the Shi clan. But when it comes to trying to get his idea across, more than his true status as the Moon Prince. His forwardness with Maomao is really telling, and the apotehcary bring obtuse as her usul, and Jinshi always having his kisses be hilariously interrupted, he can only use her as a pillow for now.

And to state the obvious, Loulan is still alive with Jinshi's hair stick to get a jade cicada, under a different name of Tamamo...

Masterpiece season, as always. Season 3 can always very well be on the horizon, which it is aforementioned for the sequel incoming.

Finally, Season 2 is over!
It was honestly exhausting—I binged it over three days, watching around 8 episodes per day. I won’t deny that I enjoyed it! I already love this series, and Mao Mao is one of my favorite female characters—honestly, I wouldn’t mind placing her in my overall top 3 female characters of all time.

The ending was truly unexpected, and I absolutely loved Shisui!
Because I love this anime so much, I wrote a long, detailed review that took a lot of effort. If you’re interested, give it a read—and don’t forget to leave some emojis to motivate me to keep writing! 👇👇

I didn’t use any images in my comments since I was fully focused on watching.
Also, I want to say—this is undoubtedly one of the best anime of 2025.

Thank you, Mao Mao! I’ll miss you until a new season comes out, if there is one. 🖤🔥🎬🧬✨

Of course the kiss had to be cut mid way, but it was still great to see the relationship between Maomao and Jinshi to grow more. The sequel just got announced and this anime's score will definitely go way up, maybe even higher than a score of 9

Can’t believe we went thru 6 months like that. Time flies when you’re watching peak! Perfect finale, got my Jinmao reunion/new beginning AND a season 3 announcement!!! Please be sure to support the books in the meantime

Nah they were really trying to kill me with the Jinmao moments today oh my god wtf?? The near kisses, the yearning on Jinshi’s face, the way they look at each other.. hello?!!! That’s how you end a season after all the teases they’ve had all season long. “The beginning” is such a good title for this episode because this truly is the start of a very different Jinmao relationship, new role for Maomao, new political era for the kingdom and new life for so many other characters we met this season!! Especially happy for Suirei and the kids, Ah-Duo is an angel.

Not even gonna try to hide it, the Jinmao stuff is what made this finale so amazing to me 😭 I deserved this. The way Maomao acted like an overprotective wife and made sure Jinshi’s bandages were wrapped properly, him pulling her down to lay with him and checking her bruises.. ahh I was so weak during that whole sequence. Peep how Jinshi face lit up when Maomao said he looked better with the scar too, bro was smiling like a mf lmaoo. Almost got a kiss there but those damn kids had to wake up, typical married couple experience

“Can we continue some other time??” UM HELLO JINMAO ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL ME??

The one thing I hate here is that everyone left Xiaolan without saying goodbye and she’s the sweetest, most innocent and vulnerable one of the group. That really broke my heart seeing Maomao read her letter.. I’m glad she got a job away from the palace, but her best friends and basically sisters just up and leaving and her not knowing the real reason hurts sm. Maomao crying there just shows how truly human she’s become and how she’s grown over this season.

They kinda went through it quickly, but Maomao’s little depressive stage there is so important for her character. That “I hope they never find her” because that means she can keep some hope that Shisui is still out there alive and then the finger cutting scene because she wouldn’t be able to see Jinshi again.. massive scenes for her character development

Not grandma playing matchmaker and trying to make sure Jinshi and Maomao get together. Biggest Jinmao shipper of all lmao. But the freaking neck bite and pulling her in for the hug??! Jinshi are you insane or what?? “Do you have poison in you too?” OH MY GOD WE WERE SO CLOSE FUCK YOU KYOU-U 😭 at least we know Maomao 1000 percent knows how Jinshi feels and she knows her feelings are starting to change too. We will reach the promised land one day.

Shisui, now Tamamo, living happy and free is all I can ask for. She looks so pretty and at peace. Perfect ending. Perfect season. Peak fiction. Can’t wait for season 3!!

That's quite a strange medicine that cause memory loss only a part that seems traumatic, but at least I'm glad those children are alive.

This arc try to explore a new area, but it doesn't exceed the castle and the redlight district yet. While I'm not against the idea of going out again, the new area should be something far more interesting, like oversea, for example.

In the presence of war, Maomao is almost useless, this is where army which comprised entirely of men shine. I don't mind that considering that in other time the focus are almost on female characters. But still, I wish Maomao could play a more active role on this, no I don't expect her to do a swordfight or something, but maybe like being a medic, she can't even suture a wound there.

Decent epilogue,

The resurrections of the kids was pretty obvious but it's cool to see especially for Kyou u,

The romance part with Jinshi is still pretty corny and awkward, while i like that we see his true self like Loulan i kinda miss their almost antagonistic and cold vibe sometime,

For Loulan the fact she's alive needs explanations, i don't expect less since this is a relatively realistic anime and it really kills last episode's ending that somehow she survived imo

Overall a decent season with pacing problem, a convulated for nothing lore introduced and a badly paced last arc, while i think season 1 had flaws it still is a much more memorable adaptation

So i'm giving a solid 7.5/10,

This still itches things no other animes can do, it looks fantastic, the openings and endings are great and it still is a great episodic detective anime even if i wish sometime that Maomao wasn't so good at deducing everything,

That and the fact some random girl is finally so implicated with the palace (met the emperor, his brother is in love with her, her father is the general) is also something not realistic,

I really liked how in the beginning she made marks just by her actions while being a nobody, i kinda miss that.

Will watch s3 either way.

Man, this season has been such a banger! Even the episodes that people felt weren't up to par was intriguing to me because of the overall lure and set-up for the incredible Shi clan arc. Loulan turned out to be the perfect villain in the end and certainly outdid her dad's performance there. From last ep, it was clear that Shenmei was honestly beyond help and her real intentions unravelling was as expected, take down the rot from the family. For it to be at the cost of multiple other innocent Shi clan members though, that goes to show it wasn't exactly purely white but enthralling nonetheless.

And we got that save in the end too! It's just sad that Maomao and Xiaolan (oh, and man, her letter left a tear in my eyes too!) will probably never be able to confirm it for themselves but that's the right end to this, I suppose. Also, respect to Ah duo-san for taking in Suirei and the other kids from potential fallout, would love to see more of her honestly. Gyokoyou-sama giving birth to a healthy baby so we've got a new Empress in the royal palace finally.

Now, on the meaty part... The flirting between the main two is giving me sugar attacks xD. The continuation interrupted yet again, jeez. Maomao knows what she'll be getting into though, so I'm really curious to know if she'll go through with it. She's clearly more interested although whether it's reciprocal or not just yet is probably a different matter altogether. But I've a feeling we'll eventually get there.

Big today with many of the big Summer shows starting to air, but it will definitely be second to this close. Very well-deserved sequel in store too! Season 1 and Season 2 came in quick succession, wouldn't mind having to wait for a bit but if they decide to give us the goods soon, I would be eternally grateful ~ Let's get this to complete adaption! My plan was to immediately hop on to the novel but I guess I'll wait for now. I don't know if it's better but the anime is killin' it and that's good enough for me. Going to have to go with a solid 9 for this one.

On another note, they even got Mrs. Green Apple on board and Ryokuoushoku Shakai last season, I wonder who else will feature.

Pretty decent season overall, but struggled with this a bit at times and even though season 1 had minor lulls for me too, there was much more to that season that recovered those and had me enjoy it thoroughly than this. Pacing could've been better last few episodes but at least the payoff was decent. 7/10 probably is how I feel, good but expected a lot more. New season announced too so hopefully that delivers a bit more than this one did.

I'm not ready to say goodbye to this masterpiece and return to the dull Fridays but with the announcement of season 3 (or at least I think it's that) I'm really excited.

I'm really happy Shisui/Loulan (now Tamamo?) is alive but did she really have to sell the hairpin? That was low of her. The Xiaolan update delighted me as well, dare I say I cried during it.

Just imagining how Xiaolan handled Maomao and Shisui disappearing one day and never returning before she left the palace herself breaks my heart, man. If only she knew she became someone Maomao would cry for.

The warm fuzzy emotional validation that final scene ended things on is unreal. Please have them reunite one day!

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Being safe in 4 in 5 cases. With the fifth being the side-effects that you put in very small letters on the lower part of the commercial.

Maomao now is free woman, I guess. And mother of one, kinda.

State run orphanage.

Xiaolan is well, Loulan is well, Maomao is well.

Now from whats looks like in the episode, Jinshi will be continually frog-blocked, in next season.

LET'S FREAKING GO SHISUI LIVES!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy they decided to go with this route.

Only thing that could have made this ending better is if jinshi and Maomao finally kissed, but noooooooo a child has to interfere yet again 🙃

I do find it kind of cruel that out of all the children Kyou-u was the one to lose his memories. You could argue it's for the best considering what happened to his mom and all, but still... he deserved better.

I do wonder if not sealing Mamao and Jinshi's relationship with kiss means we might get 3rd season. Honestly, I would love that! But honestly, even a simple bonus episode where Mamao, Shisui and Xiaolan get reunited or at least Mamao gets her harpin back and Tamao receives Xiaolan's letter, would be ebough to satisfy me.

From beginning to end, this truly was a phenomenal anime and really good sequel to the first season 👌

Edit: nvm, apparently a 3rd season was announced! Let's goooo 🙌🙌🙌

The kids alive, Shisui/Loulan alive now as Tamamo (Sold the hairpin so Maomao/Jinshi might eventually learn of this) and she might be going across the sea?, xiaolan left the rear place and found a work place nice, Maomao now basically took her dads place as the pleasure district apothecary while her dad took her place in the rear palace. Man I really hope the 3 of them Maomao, Shisui, and Xiaolan can meet again. Plz someday right?

We also got some scenes with Jinshi and MaoMao. Jinshi though just keeps getting interrupted lol.

We also know there will be a sequel! Apothecary fans are eating goood!

48 episodes in and we nearly get an official Maomao and Jinshi sailed ship, but we did get a neck bite.

Even though it was hinted that the kids were alive, bringing them back makes Shisui actions completely pointless, however it was nice to see who adopted them.

Shisui character was way too strongly developed for the show to get rid of her. Tbh I'm glad, would be good to see more of her in the next season.

We got more Jinshi x Maomao, kiss got interrupted as usual. Someday hopefully they'll be together. One of my fav couple from recent times. Words can't describe how much I love them.

Fantastic season, everything that was built up from the very begining finally paid off and there's more to come. So glad we got sequel confirmation. Looking forward to that but prolly will have to wait a while. Like in 2027/28 prolly. Till then sayonara~

For the people that didn't get how Shisui/Loulan was alive by the end of the season, the hairpin that MaoMao gave to her actually saved her life when she was shot. That was a perfect finale to sort out all the emotions I've felt this season!!

Im really gonna miss this trio, it's so rare to see Maomao shed a tear, hopefully they able to reunite someday ; - ;

Jinshi was locked in! After revealing his identity, he can't hold back his urges anymore, this guy bit Maomao like an animal marking its property or something! They just keep teasing us with those kisses, just let it happen!!

And to Shisui.. Loulan.. Tamamo.. I hope to see you again someday, bye-bye!

There is a chinese legend about a fox-spirit that impersonates a consort named Daji with a connection to the japanese legend of Tamamo-no-mae, there's a story that Tamamo first appeared in China and then came to Japan.
Shisui really is a fox.

@Hi3745 This doesn't make this scene any less ridiculous, she was way too fortunate to survive (and there were 2 shots BTW). Bullet hitting that exact spot is just stupid (if she had a metal plate not a miniscule hair pin it would be a different story) but there's also the fact that she survived a fall from such height (yeah, yeah, snow and all that but she had egregious plot armour).

Still, I liked series as a whole and rated it 8/10, although if I've had to include every stupid thing I saw here it would be significantly lower.

@iluvmozu i think it's either shisui may have lost her memories after the fall and that's why she doesn't remember the hairpin's worth (she did mention to maomao before it's a bit one of a kind & she may sell it) OR she did that intentionally hoping it'd someday be a sign that reaches maomao that she's still alive. i sure hope it's the latter actually i want them reunited with xiaolan at some point again :( i cried during her letter too

Tamano going across the sea? She did Mamao dirty not returning the hair stick.

"A New Land" in the preview and the season 3 trailer is a bit misleading when it is just the northern lands of the kingdom, taken over from the Shi clan.
@LordCrueltyV It was her way of returning it, sooner or later that hair pin will come back to Jinshi (this is royal hair pin after all), it was the only way for her to live and try to return it. And since she has to flee it was her last chance to return it.

@goral the first shot obviously wasn't vital (though the only scene that we got was her blood dripping on her right arm) then she kept dancing but the last shot was around the torso (got shot where the hairpin was). The falling part was just fortunate luck, though snow lessened the impact obviously she would still be injured nonetheless.

I don't know if it's better or worse than S1, but still awesome.

btw fuck you Loulan! You were supposed to give that back to MaoMao! How could you sell it?

No way I'd not give this 10/10. People gotten used to them churning out peak after peak episode like a Rolls Royce factory. But it hurts now the season's finished.

Glad to have seen confirmation that Shisui did actually get a new start.

Pretty solid episode to complete the season, because it rounded up on most loose threads.

We got to the the kids back alive, Xiaolan's letter, Gyokuyou confirmed as the empress, Luomen continuing at the rear palace, Shisui's fresh start and Maomao at the entertainment district.
Cant wait for the next seaon :))

This season finale was sooooo good I'm crying. Jinshi isn't getting that kiss ever hahahaha!
ALSO IM SO HAPPY THAT SHISUI SURVIVED OMG and especially the way how she was saved by the hairpin Maomao gave her, that carries such a heavy meaning lowkey. BUT SHE TRADED IT, SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO GIVE IT BACK TO HER!
Great finale 10/10

Intimate moments between maomao and jinshi feel awkward and I’m never a fan of them because of how maomao isn’t showing interest and jinshi seems like he doesn’t want to ask before starting. Something needs to change there for that aspect of the show to be likeable. It’s been my only (I don’t want to say complaint, the show is good) complaint
HER. That is all.
