New arc started this episode and it's an interesting one, with the Mill House and dealing with a church. This has a somewhat slow start as it's the next part of Holo and Lawrence's adventures.

They also didn't forget about the chemistry between Holo an Lawrence again. Seems Holo always wants to be spoiled whereever he's around lol

Oh no, it’s her tail( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Though hey, Lawrence can’t stop fucking up it seems, I mean not just too long ago they’ve kind of reconciled and now guy is hurting Holo in more ways than one. But yeah, it’s their constant back and forth which tells the tension and misunderstandings will no longer sour the mood between the two. By the way, you know it won’t be much easy to gather more info about Yoitsu from a village, which kind of gets scorned by the town folks it’s a part of and yeah, even the villagers seem anything but enthusiastic.

Add Elsa girl to the mix. Still the arc has just started, and I mean it’s the first new content from this series after years, so we’d see how it goes, and how the duo would get in trouble, because of course they would lol.

Holo getting a lil thick there 😋 and Lawrence better be careful where he walking, stepping on holo tail is punishable by death! I’m actually surprised that hasn’t happened more considering how she sleeps so wild lol

New episode, new town for us to explore this week. Torneo feels like one of those small towns that’s hostile to visitors that you’d see in a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western. The people there are definitely hiding something about that abbey. Not sure how accurate what the miller told Lawrence and Holo is, but something fishy is up. Just what are Elsa and Sem hiding..

I love little conversations like Holo and Lawrence going back and forth about her folding the jacket before Lawrence gets back. It makes their relationship feel so real when they have those playful arguments about such mundane stuff. And that is literally a line my mom has said to me before so it just makes you relate to the characters

Also Lawrence getting all flustered when Holo said that’s how they look to outsiders(in reference to the late night tryst they watched) was so cute. Holo really knows just the right button to press at the right moment

Poor Holo going through it this episode. From her prized tail getting stepped on and squished, to being starved half the episode lmao.

Looks like this time around, it's some mystery with this whole thing with the abbey, and why the townspeople are acting so defensive when it comes to the topic of.

Only the first episode of this arc, and I can wholeheartedly say, just because of this alone, the fifteen year wait was WELL worth it.

Poor Holo but I laughed when she screamed, oh how I love these moments.

The village does not look particularly welcoming, gives a gloomy vibe.

I wonder why they don't want to tell about the abbey, must be something bad.

Lol we're all been there with blanket stealing. Holo making deductions thats swiftly corrected by Lawrence was pretty amusing. Quite the bounty of Rye that the town had. Its quite sad to be seen as potential criminals despite the importance of the millers to the village. The welcome they received from the village sure was frosty. Evan and Elsa though sure ahd quite the curious bond. Curious to see what secrets this town holds. Quite glad to see this arc get animated when the OG anime just skipped it.

Finally, I get to see one of my favorite books of the series adapted after all this time!
And, so far, it's everything I was hoping for and more.

A mix of unfamiliarity, eerie calm and mystery, plus two new characters who make a strong impression (Evan and Elsa): a nice and very faithful start to this new arc.
As always there is also a few good one-liners from Holo, and some really nice bantering and flirting between our two main characters.
The animation was simple but nice and contributed to this feeling of being far from everything.

Holo and Lawrence feel closer than ever but also pretty vulnerable in this isolated setting, and at the same time, you can't help but want to know more: about the village, about Elsa and Evan (and their relationship), about the lies.

Spice & Wolf new arc begins! I am excited but also sad because this will be the last arc of Season 1. :(

Bruh moment at Lawrence stepping on Holo's tail. It was pretty funny. But I wonder why Holo was squirming in her sleep. Was she just uncomfortable or was she getting more nightmares? I hope it's the former.

Elsa and the rest of the villagers are fishy. I wonder what's going on.

As always I enjoyed Holo and Lawrence's interactions. It seems like Holo got over the past arc pretty quickly. Glad for both of them.

Looking forward to the rest of the arc. I hope Season 1 will end on a strong note and Season 2 will be greenlit immediately.

The banter between Lawrence and Holo continues to be entertaining as ever as this arc gets off to a rather interesting start.

Torneo is a small town, although it's had the least welcoming vibe that we've seen from any other town or village so far. Lawrence wasn't having much fortune in wanting to find the whereabouts of the abbey, where Elsa, in charge of the church, got all vocal at him before forcing the doors shut on him. The village elder, Sem, also gave him the same answer as well, but you can tell that something is being covered up with how both of them acted towards Lawrence.

Hopefully the pair can make progress into knowing more about the abbey as well as maybe knowing more about the relationship between Elsa and Evan. I do look forward to seeing more of this arc next time.

Lawrence and Holo arrive in the next village on their trip. Continuing North to find information on Holo hometown. Entering this town where they hope to find the local abbey to get said information. Before even reaching the village they run into a Miller boy named Evan near at a water wheel. Lawrence explanation about why being a miller is a thankless job was spot on. Its a necessary job so that flour can be made from wheat but its very grueling on the miller themselves since there's so many negatives to the job. Evan seems very excitable and I'm agreeing with Lawrence again that he probably wants to get out of this small town and stop being a Miller. Inside the town Lawrence and Holo are meet with some bad glares and states from the villagers. I suppose they don't take kindly to outsiders. The banter between our main two was very cute throughout the episode, Holo teasing Lawrence never gets old. I loved that scene at the end of the episode where Holo teases him about how people would see them acting lovingly to one another. Arriving at the Abbey they meet a Church woman named Elsa. Whom seems very defensive about forgoing any information Lawrence wants to know. Same with the village elder, he as well seems unusually tight lipped. Lawrence is right in thinking there's something being hidden here. Best to find out whay that is.

@wildhood Yeah, this arc was cut in the original, likely to keep the focus on Holo and Lawrence's relationship, rather than the worldbuilding and overaching story that this arc plays a role in. It contrast's to the arc that 2008 version covered which continued the focus on Holo and Lawrence's romance. That arc was vol 5 were as this arc is vol 4.

As for surpassed, unless they continued afterwards to vol 5 , and cover more after, then it's more this versions main advantage will be it told a more consecutive story overall, as well as more faithful character designs and portrayals.

@wildhood Not exactly. The old anime still covered volume 5 of the novels, they just skipped this content aka volume 4. So we're in uncharted territory but haven't surpassed what was already covered.

Pretty cool to be here in an arc that the OG skipped and hasn’t been adapted until now, of course this whole first season has been new to me because I haven’t watched the OG but still pretty cool lol. And so far I’m liking the mystery they’re setting up here with the villagers clearly lying about not knowing about this abbey, as well as how this new village is kinda unsettling and the least welcoming one they’ve been in so far, honestly it gives me Resident Evil 4 vibes down the location and look of the village, if I didn’t know this was Spice & Wolf I’d think this could turn into a horror anime lol.

And along with this new arc is new characters, Elsa is pretty sus but also pretty cute, and turns out she has a thing with Evan the miller, definitely curious as to what’s going on with them beyond romance. I also enjoyed the Lawrence and Holo moments in this one, I’ve definitely missed them since the previous arc didn’t feature many, the opening bit with the tail was great, as was the very last bit of the episode in the bedroom. Also, damn they’re delivering some tasty shots of Holo with those angles behind her lol, no complaints here.

It's funny how Lawrence keeps losing to Holo, time and again. Could you say no to Holo? She's too cute and clever. Lawrence tries to resist with silence or by playing dumb, but he always ends up giving in. Holo really showed her beauty today. Elsa also seems like she'll be a good character; I like her rough personality, but she seems sweet and loyal too, as shown when she hugged Evan.

I haven't seen the original adaptation, but from what I've heard, this arc wasn't in the old version. With everything the anime has shown so far, I dare say this remake has surpassed the original.

A new roadblock has now appeared: a town who's hiding the directions of the abbey needed for their next destination. Something's going on with the chruch and both the miller, Elsa and the elder seem to be more or less involved. At the very least in this process the relationship between Lawrence and Holo went to the normal status.

After a stretch of episodes I didn't find that interesting or particularly likable, volume 4's adaptation is here and finally, brand new content that wasn't in the original adaptation. It was a slow episode for sure but I do find the setting to be a bit interesting and on the quieter side with some elements of chaos developing throughout the episode and maybe the arc surrounding the abbey, the miller and even the person in charge of the church (and their potential relationship with the miller running towards her at night there where everyone else is not there in the centre of the town). Some minor bits of flirting there too with Lawrence and Holo as usual too. I do like that this conflict that might be developing is not just Lawrence vs the world but could potentially lead to a situation with Lawrence and Holo working together to help those two out in some capacity? This series really does need something to keep it fresh since some concepts have been repeated too often within this run. Maybe a bit dry at times for me but this arc should hopefully have some potential without relying on forced tension which the last volume sadly had.

After 15 years, we finally get to see Volume 4 of the LN adapted, which was the lone volume skipped over in Season 2 of the OG series.

Lawrence and Holo sleeping together in the wild, and the latter's backshots sure are enticing to a degree other than having the former stepping on her tail, as they head to Tereo, which they're passing by at Enberch. And in a cold climate to purchase bread and wheat, as well as meet someone Lawrence knows at the Tereo Church, the journey is slow and winding until they reach the town, though they get stopped by a miller of Evan Gyoam operating a waterwheel, albeit temporarily. But his job is not an easy one when necessary, though at the behest of running away at the instance of the chance he gets.

Upon reaching Tereo, the place is rather hostile, and priest Elsa Schtingheim doesn't appreciate visitors after Father Franz's passing last Summer, which the both of them can't do a thing until they get information on the Diendran Abbey. First, to meet the town's head of Sem and offer his condolences with wheat, but it's clear that something is going in within Tereo ...that both the miller boy and the church girl are definitely a secret couple at that, meeting at the dead of night, though it doesn't compare to that of Lawrence and Holo.

The mysteries of Tereo start here...

And here it is, the newly-adapted arc - and it did not disappoint, I'm absolutely hooked! I'm very interested to see what this village's hostility is about, both to the Abby and to Lawrence & Holo - is this hostility from Torneo to all outsiders, or to the two of them specifically?
The characterization of Elsa and the villagers contrasts quite drastically with that of the village elder and Evan, which I'm excited to see develop and change over the course of this arc.

It's been 15 years, so I should be able to remain patient until next week - but it's still tough!
