The skill of archery is on display. Tokiyuki's desire to prove himself is admirable imo but he's still got a lot to learn.

There's also more lore and the usual comedy gimmicks from the anime. However, I am really looking forward to more development for Tokiyuki's character. With every episode, it seems he shows more potential.

People are coming for Tokiyuki now...

It is decided that Tokiyuki needs to learn offensive skills. Since his father, Houjou, had a particular fondness for archery, Tokiyuki is already quite proficient at it. Thus, they decide that he should first master archery. Their plans are interrupted by the arrival of Sadamune, who threatens Yorishige, accusing him of hiding Tokiyuki or his retainers. To ensure Tokiyuki’s training continues, Yorishige decides he must learn archery from Sadamune in secret.

This Sadamune guy is creepy as hell. This dude has to be looking hella closely to tell the difference between male and female ticks... That's not even the worst he does this episode. This dude keeps on expanding his eyeballs the ENTIRE episode. Like no one, and I mean, NO ONE, wants to see that. Creepy dude and his eyeballs aside, god damn is this sport cruel. For once in my life, I actually agree with Yorishige about this just being animal cruelty lol. CGI was used this episode. Was pretty much granted given half the episode they are on horses. But it ain't like that ugly ass Demon Slayer S3 CGI, so we're good /s.

How in the world will Tokiyuki come back from this one....

This was the worst episode by far. The comedy as usual was insufferable with Sadamune being such an annoying, 'turn off the television' kind of villain that fits with the unfunny comedy of this series really well as well as the tonal clashes present with the setting itself. The animation was bizarre as a whole to talk about. Some shots looked pretty good and reminiscent of the first few episodes and some were expressively animated (overexpression at times to the point of looking stupid rather than cool with some of the closeups of Sadamune and Suwa's facial reactions - especially with Sadamune and his eyes). Then there was shots of Sadamune's face just moving like a panning shot with no actual movement to his face whatsoever while talking a couple of times, and then the dreadful looking CG shots of Sadamune at times in the archery stuff in the second half of the episode when riding the horse. The horses themselves weren't too bad but Sadamune looks so terribly drawn and unfitting in the backgrounds and world that the art and visuals have set standards for with its start, and even Tokiyuki didn't look great either. Legitimately felt like I was watching a slightly upgraded Kingdom season 1 visually in that scene there with its CG implementation. I don't mind CG in general being used here but as long as it can be decently implemented and not be overly distracting and clunky compared to how well-drawn the series can be in other times, or if the issues with them are only shown a couple of times max in an episode. Just jarring stuff and the tone clashes didn't help.

The animation and overall visuals really had been carrying those first couple episodes to fit the intensity of the setting well but this episode was jarring, looks very disappointing with some real flaws in the second half and the unfunny comedy is still really deep-rooted to the core of the series. There is some focus for growth with Tokiyuki to embrace real practice as an archer to have some offensive firepower to have alongside his evading and running capabilities but that is about it. Tonally, hard to take any of the antagonists seriously whatsoever, even after such a brutal coup d'etat that was shown in the first episode that should make them feel far more threatening than how I feel now.

So the emperor is never actually shown I assume, this goes with the tradition that most anime never show or even mention the emperor, at least for anime set in modern day Japan, they never talk about the current emperor...

Wow... What a downgrade on the animation. CGI for the Dog Hunting Comp? So disappointed... Really disappointed. Hopefully, they will completely normal animate it for the Blu-ray. But can't even hope for that atm :/

That dog hunting competition looked like absolute ass compared to everything before it. wonder if this will be fixed in the blurays for this or if this be close to the final version then since this looked uncharacteristically awful in comparison to the rest of the series so far. Some shots of Sadamune whether closeups, slightly wider shots or shots of him on the horse in the background look fucking terrible.

The visuals definitely had a noticeable downgrade this week but it's pretty normal for most anime to have a few episodes that get the short end of the stick production-wise. Kind of unfortunate that that's become an expectation nowadays but it is what it is. I wonder if CGI was used to make it easier to animate all the movements on horseback.

Some cool archery on display this week and Tokiyuki seems to be enjoying the thrill of it all at the end there. Let's see how he comes back against this bug-eyed weirdo. And lol at Yorishige making the comment about how what they were doing is considered animal abuse in modern times.

@thebrentinator24 Horseback is notoriously hard to animate. So if you're A JoJo fan expect part 7 to have mostly CG horses.

Tokiyuki getting roped into bigger political conflicts. His position as the surviving Hojo clan leader does force him into these bigger moments. However he did have his hand forced by Yorishige, the new governor of the region is a bug eyed psychopath named Sadamune whom some stop af anything to find the remaining Hojo clan members. Sadamune is one of Takumi retainers so he's fiercely loyal to his lord. Takauji making the smart move when the empowered offered him a place in the court he deferred that to his officers. Which in turn makes them even more loyal to him instead of the emperor himself. Takauji is creating this cult of personality around him with his men following his blessings more than anything. This is very dangerous for Yorishige since now Sadamune rules over him and he's very suspicious of Hojo clan members being there. His eyesight being so good is wild, so specific with how he sees details of people even far away. Acting like a total psycho hitting that shrine maidens ear. The dog shooting completion had me worried when it was first mentioned but luckily they don't use lethal arrows and each dog is trained in the Suwa shrine.. Sadamune does well in his first round but Yorishige offers him a unique deal if he can bear Tokiyuki. Who's sword skills are very weak but his archery is very good. Tokiyuki could even learn a thing or two from Sadamune precise archery. The competition between them was very good, I liked the use of CG during those horse moving scenes. Its understandable why they did that and I think it looked good. Yorishige telling Tokiyuki that Sadamune would be focusing on him for points instead of the dogs. This lets Tokiyuki adjust his strategy and let things play out exactly as Yorishige predicts. Sadamune is no pushover and doesn't take this laying down. Knocking poor Tokiyuki in the head to take the lead in points. Seeing that Tokiyuki is excited by the high pressure moment got me excited too!!

@Dukino Based on my list, I don't like dropping shows when starting them unless they are too long to commit to it in a binge. No need to insult folks for not liking something, not like I'm being critical for others for whether they are into something or not and talking about it here on an episode-by-episode basis. There were things even with the shitty comedy I did like in those first couple episodes elements-wise specifically and more of that in the future would be appreciated.

I think you want this show to be something that its not or for it to be more serious like Kingdom. This is an adaption from a loosely historical comedy manga, it lives on tonal whiplash. Most villain's will be over the top, literally the first villain takauji is laughing inside a burning building LOL. If you cant accept that then just move on, this isn't for you.

@GrimLegend It's kind of ironic since Assassination Classroom is one of my favorite anime and manga of all time and I enjoyed the comedy a lot there. I've read Neuro too, another Yuusei Matsui manga so I'm familiar with his style. Excluding that, I have enjoyed Fullmetal Alchemist a lot as well as Rurouni Kenshin with its comedy there. I don't need it to be AS serious as that series at all to enjoy it, but it's just a bit too far and distracting for me here at times and distracting me from the other stuff in this particular instance.

Another great episode - I like the glimpse in Takauji's demonic side. Tokiyuki continues to grow and gain new skills. Yorishige is still one of the best characters of the series.

The use of CGI wasn't terrible, definitely seen much worse. At least it's only used at certain points in the show and not at all times.

This episode was largely about eyes
Mr. Pretty Eyes villain apparently has very disturbing multi-eyes within eyes
Has a lackey that has constantly protruding and super weird power eyes

So right now MC has 3 arrows, other guy has 0, both have 1 point. I would assume MC gives bad guy some arrows so can keep having fun!

It's so convenient that the enemy is training partners for the MC <3

4/5, hated all the eyes and loved villains eyes then they do this to me :c

Even though the episode itself wasn't bad, it is easily the worst episode so far due to the standard set by the first three episodes. It's sad since the CGI is not the worst I have seen and there are some really well directed shots as well this episode, but the CGI is so jarring compared to the previous episodes it took me out. Sadamune especially did not look good in CGI. I have heard horses are among the hardest things to animate, so I guess this and next week's episode is expected to have lots of CGI.

Hmm, so if Sadamune has 5 points and Tokiyuki has 1 point then Tokiyuki will need to make his last shot count (I think he only has 1 arrow left) to at least tie, if not surpass, Sadamune so I'm curious as to what he will aim for. Btw even if Sadamune wins I don't think he currently knows that Tokiyuki is a Hojo descendent.

Weekly dose of Twink bf. Good episode as usual, but definitely a lot more cgi used in this one than usual. I know animating the horse riding scenes was tricky so it is what it is.

Sadamune’s eyes are the stuff of nightmares man my God all his scenes were uncomfortable to watch. Again, never seen or read Assassination Classroom before but I’ve been told a lot about the faces the mangaka incorporates and even in the early going of this story we’ve seen a lot. Takauji and his retainers just all feel like demons in human form.

Pretty ingenious strategy by Suwa to have Tokiyuki learn from Sadamune’s technique right under his nose. It’s cool how hide and seek and games are incorporated into the actual narrative here. It’s a good way to compartmentalise everything for someone as young as Tokiyuki while helping with his training.

Didn’t think Sadamune would show up again so soon for the dog shooting competition, but man Suwa’s “you can shoot your opponents” stipulation was so wild that it shocked even him lmao.

Tokiyuki was a little shaky to start, but by the end of the episode he’s warmed up and is having fun, treating the competition like a big game. Next episode should be fun and hopefully they take out bug eyes cause idk how many more of his crazed faces I can take lmao

This has been a step-down animation wise (horses), but it also happens to be the funniest episode so far, so it balances out. I particularly enjoyed all the gags they did with Sadamune's eyes.

Seems to be an unpopular opinion but I actually enjoyed this episode the most so far. The animation in the previous episodes were definitely eye-candy material and superior compared to this episode, but I still found them a bore to watch content-wise. In comparison, even with the CGI usage and all, I always enjoy watching archery competitions and while I find Sadamune and his protruding eyes disgusting, he actually seems like a pretty impressive opponent. Also, Suwa's concern about animal abuse in the dog shooting competition in the modern age was probably the first joke to amuse me in this show. Still found the other jokes too over-the-top and annoying, but better than the previous episodes overall.
