A lot of focus on Sanosuke this episode especially after he finds a picture of a man he once admired.

Seems like a character study of Sanosuke and he connects with his past. I think he might be one of the more complex characters in the show given his personality and background story.

It’s kinda wild to think Sano’s 19 and Kenshin is close to his thirties, and both of them don’t look even remotely close to their actual age lol. Though be it the way it is, I think we’re in the last mini-arc or the second last mini-arc of this bigger picture, Tokyo arc.

Good for Sano straight away, he got a chance to meet his former comrade in arms, Katsuhiro, who’s voiced by Umerhara, and who might make paintings for a living right now, but is actually scheming something, Sano of old days would have, if he didn’t meet Kenshin and co. at the right time… the plan to avenge their Sagara leader of Sekihotai. Must say, he has his preparations as well.

This man is literally planning to bomb all of the main government centres around Tokyo lol, starting with the ministry of internal affairs… very thoughtful choice, again lol. He did try to recruit Sano under his wings, and you know how passionate he is with the idea of avenging his leader. Dude did THINK A LOT, and came to the conclusion…

… that he might give a farewell party before his departure. I mean it was obvious, we were leading to this way. Though Kenshin knows, so...

Sanosuke seems to have found something he really enjoys, and it's quite intriguing.

Sanosuke takes on a task for Tae and Tsubame to fetch the newest and most popular nishiki-e prints during the day. To his astonishment, he comes across prints featuring his late mentor Sagara Sozo. This revelation leads Sanosuke to remember the artist's name as an old friend. So Sanosuke goes out to find out answer to two questions, who is the current artist behind the nishiki-e prints? And what are this individual's intentions in this modern Meiji era?

Oh, how touching to see Sano reunited with a friend from his youth, even if they have their own unique way of bantering. I'm curious if that guy is plotting to overthrow the Meiji government all on his own, or if he had some other plan. It seems like you'd need a few more people for something like that. The portrait of Captain Sagara was quite impressive; Sano's friend is a talented artist.

I'll always love Sanosuke and this episode just made me love him even more.

I think a better translation of 惡 (aku) is "evil", not "bad"

"Nishiki-e (錦絵, "brocade picture") is a type of Japanese multi-coloured woodblock printing; the technique is used primarily in ukiyo-e."
千客万来 (senkyaku banrai lit. thousand guests ten thousand come) - "flood of customers; roaring business" (except it's written right to left because people this is written in a traditional style, up to down, right to left. Japanese books are written like this to this day (Light Novels included))

4:44 春画 (shunga lit. spring picture) - "erotic or pornographic woodblock prints". You can google "春画" or "shunga" if you're curious lol
"The Sekihōtai (赤報隊, "Red Herald Regiment") was a group of Japanese political extremists formed in 1868 during the Boshin War."
"The Satsuma Rebellion, also known as the Seinan War (Japanese: 西南戦争, Hepburn: Seinan Sensō, lit. "Southwestern War"), was a revolt of disaffected samurai against the new imperial government of Japan, nine years into the Meiji era." I'm learning a lot from this!
"It's already spring, but the wind sure is cold" I love this line
18:43 "noppera-bō (のっぺらぼう) - or faceless ghost, is a Japanese yōkai that looks like a human but has no face."
This was probably always there but: 天照皇大神 (Amaterasu Ōmikami) - the goddess of the sun in Japanese mythology.

Really enjoyed this episode! Seems like we're in for one hell of an arc.

Interesting episode and character introduction. I will say that I don't understand how the art/animation is so wonky sometimes? This new dude's face was so silly looking at times during the episode.

Its nice to see Tae get some more screen time. Nishki paintings huh interesting idea. Encountering old war buddies after all this time sure was good fortune. Looks like despite the time past his desire to change the country still hasn't abated. Determined as he is to enact his revenge gotta hand it to him for his wise words though. The dinner invite though was a nice parting gift for Sano before joining his friend for his plan. Question here though is what would happen next.

Diving back into the past of Sanosuke for this next arc. Reconnecting with his childhood friend from the Sekiho army, Katsuhiro. Someone who took a very different path than Sanosuke did. While he moved forward and made a name for himself as a street brawler and muscle for hire, Katsuhiro silently worked alone to build up his grand plan. To overthrow the government that betrayed the Sekiho army and murdered their beloved captain. Sanosuke finding out he's in Tokyo right before the plan is set into motion, lucky he looked into those wooden art paintings. Its a wild plan to destroy the army, navy and Treasury all at once. Throwing an already tired government into chaos and opening the door for nation wide riots from the improvised citizens. Katsuhiro has felt to have been pushed to such a course of action over this ten year period, in his eyes what better way to get revenge on the people who took everything he loved as a kid. Sanosuke still feeling intense loyalty to his friend and the Sekiho army going along with this plan as we see. At least he got one last happy night with all his new friends here in Tokyo. The party seemed like a lot of fun for everyone, Sanosuke leaving with a parting message that Kenshin overheard. Kenshin has to stop these two before they're wanted men for life.

The anime-original scene where Katsuhiro draws Kenshin without a face is amazing.

This remake is trully delivering something precious to us fans. I just would like the overall direction quality and soundtrack to be better.

Nice to get some more Sanosuke focus after a while, this time he’s reunited with an old friend from when he was in the Sekiho Army, Katsuhiro, only this friend has a lot of bombs and wants to commit terrorist acts lol. I figured Sanosuke would outright refuse but he actually ended up going along with it for now, even having a big party before going out to do the deed, but Kenshin sleeps with one eye open and heard the whole plan, thing is tho I think Sanosuke said all that on purpose, I really don’t think he’d just go along with this. Guess we’ll find out next time!

Also the bit of history about the artwork was very cool as well, I love stuff like that.

@BDL Yes lots of nice small anime only details added in this episode. Like the small flashback of Tsunan's interactions with Captain Sagara, and having a bunch more people be present for the dinner party than just Kenshin's group and Tae and Tsubame (heck I don't even think Megumi was there in the manga). Tsunan also spoke a lot more and was less gloomy than how he was in the manga. Finally the tense scene of Tsunan drawing Kenshin and inquiring into his past, and that dialogue about Kenshin hiding his real self. Just lots of nice additions that doesn't change the plot, but only enhances it.

Also that dialogue between Tsunan and Captain Sagara is really great. Sagara is a really swell guy, looking out for the kids who will live peacefully in the future, telling them to abandon the blades and guns for the knowledge (stay in school kids). Unfortunately Tsunan was too young to understand at the time, and his admiration for the Captain only drove him further into isolation and hate for the Meiji government after the fall of the Sekiho Army, which is probably exactly what the Captain does not want for him, to hold onto his hate. Well at least Tsunan's doing alright as an artist.

Ah yes, was wondering what happened to the other kid at Sekihotai after the disband, here finally they introduced him after 10 years, he still held the grudge, dearly, as a Nishiki artist.

While Sano manage to get rid of it by fighting with Kenshin, and become a good freeloader currently, that Tsunan guy can't be taken into consideration by the same way as Sano. The only way to make sure bro can open his eyes more to the peace society, by making those party, it seems. But, bro have all the plan intacted, so Sano need to tag along as long as possible, as a good bro.

Kenshin obviously indeed listened to it all. Now the showdown to know how Kenshin dealt with the two brothers rioting plan should be interesting to see for the next. Sano versus Kenshin rematch is truly the highlight, perhaps...

@silversaint

That was because of the fillers.
- Episode 13 about the sumo.
- Episode 14 about Megumi's job as a doctor.
- Episodes 15 & 16 about the old assassin.
- Episode 17 about the circus.
- Episode 18 about Yahiko stealing the sakabato.
- Episode 22 about the train.
- Episodes 25-27 about the pirates.
If you remove them , the Kyoto Arc could have began at Episode 18 in the previous adaptation.

The pacing for the Oniwaban-shu sub-Arc was slower for this one (mostly due to it being more faithful to the Manga) , so we'll begin it at Episode 20.

The extra story of Sanosuke and the Nishiki paintings in Volume 6 of the manga.

Sanosuke takes the spotlight this episode by buying Nishiki paintings, specifically 2 of Tsunan Tsukioka's Iba-Hachi, though a drawing of his previous Captian Sagara fuels Sano to find the ex-Sekiho Army soldier-turned-artist. In the 10 years since the war, Tsunan still bears grudges on those who tarnished the Sekiho Army and Captain Sagara's name, and wants a revival to bring down the Meji Revolution and re-create the vision of their captain.

The 10 years Tsunan has prepared for this day by creating bombs to be set off all around Tokyo, this is the catalyst he's aiming for to overthrow the government, even if Sano did not want to be part of this covert operation. But first, a big reunion celebration hosted by Sano himself, though Tsunan has his reservations about Kenshin as he drew him, facing an Imperalist at the same time. And with everyone asleep, the plan can finally start for a retaliation against the Meiji government.

How will this plan by ex-Sekiho Army soldiers suffice?

Things are finally starting to get interesting. We met a former Sekiho Army member and close friend of Sanosuke, who’s still set on taking revenge for his fallen master and comrades. I was really surprised that Sanosuke didn’t try to stop him and is even joining in on the plan. I doubt Kenshin will just sit by without getting involved.

Sano could easily have become Katsu if he had let that bitterness and anger consume him. What happened to his Sekiho comrades is pretty tragic, but 10 years of holding onto that grudge must have been like poison for his soul. I know Sano’s going along with this scheme, but something tells me he’s not that same guy from before. I hope he can save Katsu before he does something he can’t come back from.
