So I see that some people say romance is the cringiest anime genre for them. I don't get it. Why is it that some hate romance anime for? I'm not a huge fan myself, but they're some really good ones I've seen. While some may be bland and generic, they still look okay. Even so, what is it that makes people cringe at romance anime?

cringe (my own definition regarding anime) = unrealistic and at the same time less interesting than reality

The average romance anime tropes are unrealistic (years and years of flirting, holding hands and absurd misunderstandings) and also less interesting than reality (actual romance progression).

There's just a multitude of cliche tropes they frequently fall in. Mainly just how overly unrealistic romance anime's can just be.

The plot being driven by forced and misplaced misunderstandings.
Poorly written love triangles.
Some main characters just think with their dick school days.
That phone call interrupting every romance scene.
And the very excruciatingly slow progress, realistically these things happen in real life within a month or two , but animes like taking 2 whole seasons.

I love romance, but a lot of anime with romance as a main theme are not that good and are about generic school kids.

For me, it's honestly just that most romance anime I've watched are garbage. I've seen tons of praise for some of them, but then I get my hopes up and watch them and they're just bad. I genuinely love good romance, but I consider it the genre where most series are way overrated. I tend to say I hate romance anime, but really I guess I just hate the vast majority of them. For instance, Plastic Memories and Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai both have high scores (at least I consider 7.92 to be somewhat high on MAL) and I saw a ton of praise for both of them. I genuinely expected to like them, but they are some of the most infuriating shows I've ever watched. I hate both of them with a burning passion. I just really despise how romance is done in anime 90% of the time.

I didn't like the romance genre at all for the longest time, but after I tried a few I found out they were quite fun. You just gotta indulge in the cheesiness instead of trying to fight it.

I don't hate them, however most of them follow the same tropes which makes it difficult to enjoy them after you've seen a few of them since you can literally predict all the plot points. And the characters tend to not exactly act like normal/real people would.
Whether that's due to cultural differences, inexperienced writers or the writers just wanting to create their own perfect wish fulfillment simulation of a romantic relationship is difficult to say, but it (tropes & characters) can be frustrating.

I don't hate Romance Anime in general but most of the time it tends to be generic, unrealistic and full of tropes which you can easily recognise and predict them by watching a sufficient number of such genre.

People like to seem a bit pretentious while viewing anime. If sth isn't exactly the same as in our reality, they go bonkers. Completely neglecting the fact that this is fiction and it isn't hard to see the difference between what's real and what's not.

I hate it only if it's the primary genre. Everything can have a romance in it, but if it's the main focus it's a nope for me.

Naruto is battle shonen and had a romance scene no problem. Nichijou is comedy and the romance part is good. Battle royale is gore fest and there's romance in it.

you don't have to make a romance centered story to have a romance in it, let it be part of the story naturally.

In my opinion if someone hate romance anime it might be from different reasons which I guess would be -> unrealistic stuff or no progression there are some animes of 2-3+ seasons with 0 progress in the romance or also some people hate it cause they don't want to watch a fictionary romance when they haven't experienced the romantic stuff irl. There might be countless more of reasons but I ain't able to read other's people mind to know that x)

Romance is either about a generic female pursuing a hot dude, or the opposite where a average dude gets with a hot chic. Most men and women are not interested in watching a shoujo/shounen romance so they just prefer 1 of the 2. It is the 2nd most divisive genre other than comedy. I am a dude so I prefer the average male mc.

Besides that, after the couple gets together, they can`t do much else other than break up or start a family. Netorare conflicts can also exist in which many people like myself loath such forced drama. This is why anime focuses way more of a couple getting together rather than them staying together. Nowhere to go after a home run, but 1st base again. Romance is pretty superficial.

Btw a realistic romance anime would be uber garbage where most of the audience would just hate the characters. Realism is the last thing you should worry about if you want a good romance. Lol

I think there might be an equivocation.
Saying the genre is cringe doesn't necessarily mean that romance itself is cringe. More likely than not, it means that way too many romance shows are cringe. And with that I agree.
I absolutely despise shows in which interactions are prompted by a universe which revels in putting the characters through embarrassing situations. I don't need to see that, it causes me physical pain. That tends to occurs far more frequently in romance anime than, say, seinen or generic isekai. And that's one of the most prominent reasons why I don't like the genre.

People compare it with reality and forget that it's only fiction. Ikr almost every romance anime has a few things in common but what's the point in comparing it with reality?... a controversial topic. You may feel better if you escape from reality sometimes.

There's nothing wrong with romance anime. If you think there is then we can talk about that later (spoiler: I will win).

Also to save some time from writing long ass bs, where does this hate even comes from? If it even exists.

I like romance Anime but I’ll admit that a lot of the genre can be off putting to an outsider. Beyond the bland and boring, a Romance series can sometimes be fetishy and weird like Nagatoro, or problematic like Toradora!, or straight softcore hentai like Sono Bisque. I may not totally agree with all of these perspectives, but I can understand where they come from and why they generate the cringe.

same reason I don't watch romance live-action, it's all some kinda wish fulfillment. Whose wishes is it fulfilling? Certainly not mine.

For me personally, I wouldn't say romance anime is "cringe" but rather uninteresting. I have attempted to watch a few romance animes that a lot of people hyped up. Still, most of the time I am watching, it is either 1)never a unique plot (recycled) 2) forced chemistry between two characters or 3)the cliche anime character tropes that have a chokehold on manga artists/anime studios.

Unless of course, I am not watching the right ones then that's on me ig but I am not very fond of the genre itself anyways so that could also be it

I think people first and foremost want to be entertained, so that's typically action series. Most romances don't really provide on that front. It's easy to assume that the same demographic can't possibly be compatible with drawn out, romantic escapades.

That being said there's a LOT of junk romance out there. But there's also great stuff like Love my Life, Nana..etc. You just gotta dig for it.

On average, I don't watch much anime where romance is the main theme, as many of them contain straight relationships, and I can't really relate to that.

If the romance isn't the main focus of a story, it's actually better that way in my opinion.

Dunno man, it's the best type of anime. So good that elements of it are added to every other type of animes. We see romance elements in Shounen's to Isekai's, if romance was bad and not popular and hated on then there wouldn't be this many romance animes out there.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

I like romance anime that are kinda mature. Recently there have been some really good and mature anime. But lot of people are exposed to romance comedy, they have same problem as isekai genre that is being highly cliched with only one highly specific plot point that would define the show.
I personally have distaste of comedy in romance because that has always been forced and ultimately it's just comedy anime that have some chr that are lovey dovey.

Who? Why? How? Like yeah there are cringy romance anime out there but as with any genre there are good and bad ones, and there definitely are some GREAT romance anime that can rival the even the greatest from other genres. Also on another note, I became a huge fan of the romance genre only after I started watching anime, most live action movies didn’t really feel super genuine to me previously.

I have my good share of romance anime and I can tell you, at least in my experience, that a romance is more rewarding when the story isn't about it entirely. Like, once you hit the relationship then most romance anime just end shortly after, since it was the series' main goal.

BUT when the romance happens while there's a story that stands on its own, then the ships become extra flavor to the series. You might still crave for couple progress and such, but since the show have an actual story, then you can get distracted from your ship hunger and get absorbed by its world until next bit of progress comes around.

In summary, anime solely focused on the romance struggle to stretch it's runtime to the point it's painful to watch, while series with an overarching plot pull it off just right since its not forced to either delay or speedrun it.

I think its just boring. I wanna see people fight for the most part.
Tho in my experience I find most romance things in any medium dont do a great job at portraying romance and relationships anyway.

In western media it like always goes: Introduce 2 bland characters, bland characters with nothing in common fall in love immediately, montage through all the good parts, have one conflict arise, characters make up and live happily ever after.

Meanwhile im like, i dont even understand why these people would be interested in each other. they both have nothing to offer.

In anime its more like:
2 characters blush at each other. Female's panties are accidently shown. Man gets slapped for it and called an idiot. Do that on repeat for like 200 episodes. Maybe the characters get to hold hands by the end. Also include a harem. Main characters should have no personality. Harem members should have 1 defining trait maximum. Why does anyone like anyone when everyone is so lame... who knows.

There are three types which have severe problems:
1. Shoujo romances. Uninspiring clones of each other. Boring overused cliches and tropes.
2. Crybaits. Enough said.
3. Romcoms which focus on comedy. Mostly retarded.

Too many bad generic ones that people believe all that is for the genre. It is always worse when you see a bad show/movie from a genre then seeing a good one first. Especially for the lesser made genres.

- immature and pubertal main characters
- most times too young main characters, therefore a lot of them act pubertal
- often cheesy and idealized, often too pure
- stupid story and character tropes I dislike, from story tropes I dislike the most, if they can't communicate about little misunderstandings and make melodrama
- often immature about nudity, bodies and sex
- most times not enough of real relationship build up happens, so it feels forced
- some are too otaku-pandering and these anime care more about selling off waifus than writing a good romance
- too many cheap romcoms came out lately
