To give some examples of what I mean by hidden gems: - anime that wasn't advertised well - anime that performed poorly due to lack of accessibility - anime that had controversial factors that drove many potential viewers away - anime that was overlooked not due to poor quality, but because it aired at the same time as a much more popular anime Also, I'd appreciate it if you'd include why you believe the anime was a hidden gem. For my hidden gems, I've picked two comedy series, Cromartie High School and Level E. Cromartie High School is about a "normal" guy that did one really bad thing once and ended up in a school full of delinquents, which include some rather unique individuals like: a 40 year old rocker dude that most definitely isn't Japanese, who is mute and is dubbed "Freddy" by the "normal" guy; a short, fat kid with an incredibly hard body named Mechazawa; and a gorilla, there's no joke here. It's an absolutely ridiculous show, but also. the kind of show I can watch again and again, and not get bored. I didn't see this when it initially came out, but the only reason I can think of why it isn't more popular is simply because its episodes are half-length (about 12 min), and that can drive some people away. Level E is an equally ridiculous anime about a sadistic, genius alien, who likes to try to piss off every living being in the universe, and has recently decided to pull off his tomfoolery on earth. It too is full of unique characters like: a stand up guy just trying to live life and play baseball, two groups of aliens hell-bent on protecting earth because they both love baseball, a group of school children forced to become power ranger knock-offs, a group of incredibly gullible and equally broke guys, and many more! Unfortunately this didn't have as much rewatch value as Cromartie, because a lot of the big reveals that take place are what I found most enjoyable on my first watch, and after two watches I can already think of all the big reveals in the series off the top of my head even though its been at least a year since the last time I saw it. I think the biggest reason this anime has been overlooked is because most people don't realize that it was written by Yoshihiro Togashi, also known as the creator of both Yuu Yuu Hakushou and Hunter x Hunter, both incredibly more popular and much better known series than Level E. |

Might as well post it here again, it'll only be the third thread in an hour or two :p https://myanimelist.net/anime/1962/Chikyuu_Bouei_Kazoku Criminally underrated sentai-like show where a regular japanese family about to break apart is tasked to defend the Earth from an alien invasion. Awesome animation, wacky action, clever and bittersweet. edit: the three shows posted above me, I heard about like in my first six months after getting back into anime ;'^) Also Level E was pretty good, gf showed it to me and it was a good watch. |

Arslan Senki, I have not seen a single person hate on this anime its animation is good, amazing music, great characters, it's way more fast-paced than the manga. It is one of those anime that has a certain charm to them also it is by the creator of LOGH so even though it's got multiple remakes and is a classic in Japan it's not very popular in the anime community. |

Kamichu. At first glance it looks like a very typical CGDCT but I don't think that was what the show was aiming for at all. It's also not one of those iyashikei shows either even though the rural setting gives that impression. It's a comedy first and foremost and a very good one at that. |

In my opinion i think beelzebub is an underrated and hidden jem,but sadly both the anime and manga got cancelled while the anime didn't even cover half of the manga(which is epic by the way) it had àn anime exclusive ending And the manga was stopped(i think it was because of the controversy that people were making about the baby walking around who is a the son of the demon king etc),so the manga caught international problems and was discontinued |

They Are My Noble Masters is about a brother and sister who need a place to work and live, and end up as servants at a mansion where three sisters live. For the brother it includes romantic/sexual tension and other harem elements. The story has some good character and relationship development, and in my opinion is above average compared to other similar anime. It's a hidden gem because it's never been released on Blu-ray, was only ever released on DVD but is now out of print, and I don't think any of the major streaming services currently carry the show. |

I suppose it's not as bad as the ones who think it's funny to suggest Boku no Pico when someone asks for wholesome anime. I dunno, I prefer the Boku no Pico trolls, I feel like 99% of the anime community just instantly knows that it is a joke, whereas when someone is recommending popular anime as hidden gems, makes you question whether the person is trolling or they're just so mainstream, that they believe anything with less than a million viewers must be a "hidden gem". This is why I asked for people to say WHY they believed the anime to be a hidden gem, but clearly asking people to think critically, and do the bare minimum research (ya know, going to the anime's page and seeing how popular it is) was too much to ask for. |

I liked how it could often show subtle emotions, something very rare in anime. I vote Salaryman Kintaro. Land of the lustrous/Houseki no Kuni is a hidden gem, because the characters are literal gems. It aired the same year as MHA S2 and Made in Abyss. Moreover, it was animated with CGI and that's why it was overlooked by many. I believe it is a really solid series and in the manga it gets even better |

Iv'e already said this in another thread ( https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1922767&show=0#post39 ) but i'll post it here cuz why not. I'd say Beelzebub. I hardly see any people talk about it and it is fucking HILLARIOUS. I absolutely loved it and it's by far my favorite comedy anime For movies i'd say Promare . It's one of the few animes that actually has good CGI. The soundtracks and animation are absolutely magnificent. The character designs and characters in general are amazing, Galo is super funny and my fav character in the movie. It also tackles racial issues around the world which i think is dope, especially as a poc myself. Trigger did an amazing fucking job with this movie and i highly recommend it if you like action packed movies. |

Thread lacks some actual hidden gems, so I'll post some: - One Off, actually a big Honda ad in form on a iyashikei anime, if you like iyashikei this might be for you. - Morita-san wa Mukuchi, very similar to Senryuu Shoujo, but even shorter and without the romance. - Elf 17, criminally underrated on this site, it's a pretty decent dumb boomer OVA. - Koitabi: True Tours Nanto, for any romance fans, three stories with different settings and age ranges. - Makasete Iruka! (Grrl Power!), might be oriented to kids, but super fun regardless. The next three are somewhat known, but according to MAL, people missed it: - Kowarekake no Orgel, a shorter and better version of the well-known Plastic Memories - Tamayura, literally my favourite SoL of all time, go watch it. - Daicon Opening Animations, this is Gainax first anime and you definitely feel the passion in the work put in it, and the soundtrack by ELO is banging. All in all, I could fill the post with a bunch more hidden anime, but they aren't as good in general/between its niche. Clearly, there is a reason why a lot of these anime just aren't popular |

I feel like mushoku tensei might have been popular worldwide if it weren't for the controversy and "those" gross scenes, and also, if it had been advertised in the same way as a fighting shounen. It is popular in MAL, but I really would have liked it that it was as popular as AOT or JJK because it seems to be a great story (although, sadly, some actions of the character made the anime only popular because of the controversy, and that is not even talked about). |

Oban Star-Racers. Holy shit. So fucking slept on. Even the Japanese audio doesn't have subs. If you grew up in the US and was able to see it air for a short amount of time in the mid-2000s, you might remember that was dumped on Jetix, a channel by Disney that isn't very well remembered, nor was the show very well advertised tbh. Such a good fucking anime. SMH... your "hidden gems" are the anime with 340,000 members, TF? And I thought Oban Star-Racers having 20-30,000 was a lot for a "hidden gem"... Speaking of "hidden gems" around the 20-30K range... how many of us are rockin' with Cyber City Oedo 808? |

I haven't seen most of Aikatsu yet (only like 1 or 2 episodes lol). How is it? There's a lot of episodes, so I was intimidated at first. I'm assuming it's episodic, and if so, is it more like a "Doraemon"-style episodic where you can hop on in any episode, or more of a "Kodocha", "Detective Conan" or "Love Live"-style episodic where it's majorly episodic, but there is still progression every few episodes and shorter story arcs? Not that you have to like Doraemon, Kodocha, Conan or Love Live, just curious about how the episode structure works. I'll watch it regardless. |

Haven't watched too much anime, but I definitely don't see enough people talking about hHouseki no Kuni and also Vivy which is currently airing and is done by Wit, like bruh idk what they did with the advertising but I'd say they definitely didn't promote it well in the west. I only recently found out of its existence and I had been looking into spring season anime since winter season so yeah |

Genshiken, an anime that shows the life of otakus being otakus in the right way, without the side as romantic as in wotakoi, a slice life that explores even the difficulties that an otaku may have in the future if you just watch anime without thinking about the own life. |

There are a lot of hidden gems out there that I can recommend, but let me keep it brief I'll just recommend my favorite franchise! Jewelpet: All of Jewelpet is amazing and super underwatched. Each season is stand alone and has something different to offer than the rest of them, and each of them I found to be a lot of fun. I'd say check out one of the 5 full subbed seasons that aren't Magical Change: Jewelpet Twinkle Jewelpet Sunshine Jewelpet Kira Deco Jewelpet Happiness Lady Jewelpet |

It’s still airing and could pick up steam in terms of popularity towards the end, but I think 86 is massively underrated. It is sooooo good! |

Princess Nine - it has under 10k watchers despite being an above average sports anime from the 90s and a female lead one at that. The Case of Hana & Alice - rotoscoped movie that might not be to everyone's liking, but everyone should watch cause it's so unique. Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou - very good story about a kid not wanting to do what his parents tell him, its just animated weirdly. Nadia: Secret of Blue Water - it's a Hideaki Anno show that no one seems to care about cause it came out before Evangelion Big franchise time. Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt - 4 eps. gorgeously animated show with jazz and an easy to follow plot. but it has under 50k watchers. |

I mean MAL is still not as bad as YouTube where you stumble upon gems like this Hahahahaha. To be fair he's not 100% wrong. If there was a gem in Parasyte it was well hidden, because I didn't find it :p |
