What do you think of perverted male characters? Good or bad?

Just recently I was watching an episode of City Hunter. After watching the first episode, I noticed a lot of people in the episode forum who were showing disapproval for the MC's perverse behavior towards the women in the show. Personally, I'm not someone who gets offended easily by these type of characters. I often times find them funny as their behavior is kind of cartoony. Most people don't act like that in reality and no real-life person is getting hurt by that behavior. What are your thoughts?

it depends on the character and if they're cute and not but for most cases perverted male characters are just creepy. so yeah, bad...

I don't see them as bad people if they aren't portraited as one.
If their perverted behavior isn't portraited as rape, molesting, or something like that, then I think of them as bad. But even then, there's a lot of contexts that indicate certain scenes for example, if it isn't played as a comedic scene, then it's probably bad.

I wasted all my time in rewatching to the point of my rewatch total is higher than my overall anime total lmao

I'm mostly good with them if the anime isn't something to be taken super seriously.

For example, if we have an anime series with a pervert character that wants to be taken seriously yet he gets away with his actions most of the time for no reason, then I'll just stop taking it seriously and shut my brain. That way I can still enjoy the anime.

I wish perverted anime male characters weren't common, realistically people will most certainly avoid those kinds of people at the first few signs of indecentness.

Generally not a fan of the trait in anime, but it definitely depends on how hyperbolized that perversion is as libido is just a fundamental part of human nature. It's certainly not a deal-breaker or anything, but I feel like if anime chooses to explore it, it takes it too far where it becomes both uninteresting and somewhat off-putting.

I don't hate pervert characters in fact they can be done well like in Golden Boy. The problem is that the pervert characters are used for comedy and most of the time it's not that funny.

Pervert characters need better execution otherwise they are annoying.

I'm not minimizing it. All I'm just saying is that the actions of the characters are limited to what goes on in the anime. I'm not at all speaking on behalf of what people like that do in real-life.

I prefer my anime/manga without them. But there are some exceptions where I can grow to like them, not because of this but because of other factors. Sanji (One Piece) and Denji (Chainsaw Man) are good examples. They are greatly written despite their perverted side.

City Hunter would get all kind of flak nowadays lol

But Ryo is awesome, here the undeniable proof

There are also characters like Muten Roshi, Jiraya, Hisoka and many more which I really enjoy.

For me it depends on how the show portrays the character. Any character with any sort of moral can be a alright if it isn't being portrayed as a character to take inspiration from, to try to be apologetical to or to normalize their actions if they are clearly not in the right in the setting of the show

Yeah. I can understand people's sentiment as far as not wanting to normalize that behavior in real-life. But the way I look at it, most people have the decency not too act like that. I don't take it seriously since behavior like that wouldn't be tolerated in our world.

True as fuck, take the konosuba mc as an example, he made megumin and yunyun play strip rock paper scissors and steals that one girls underwear and it was very comedic, I'd bet money somebody got offended watching that shit 💀💀

I'm not a fan of all the molesting etc. tropes so usually I'm not all too hot on perverted characters since that's what they're usually used for. That being said there are some characters where I don't mind them being perverts. Denji from CSW is probably the best example. He's perverted but IIRC he doesn't ever go around molesting the girls in the show for comedic relief or something.

Usually it also boils down to how the other characters in the show react. If they don't care or are perverted themselves I'm fine with it, but if the characters are clearly uncomfortable with the perverted characters behavior I'm not a fan of it.

Sometimes I like them, other times I find them annoying. I guess it depends on the nature of the show and how far perverted acts are taken. For example I like Issei from DxD but I don't like Rudues from Tensei.

It can make good stories, especially if the MC really isn't a perv but all the girls think he is. But as for actual Pervy MC, It depends how far they take it, and how long the joke runs, but I'm mostly indifferent. But I really like Pervy female characters because their a lot less common.

I like characters who have some personality points with perverse nature being one of them. Hate those bastards who have just one trait, being a pervert.

Anime was it's best 20000 years ago, when cavemen drew art with real depth.

This is generally not a character trait I like, regardless of gender.

Edit: Actually, I can't think of any time this is a character trait I like; it's just one I put up with sometimes when the character has other more likeable traits.

Perverted like reads sexy stuff and watches sexy stuff and has a working sexuality? Sure I don’t mind.

But.. I really draw the line at token perverts especially in my children’s media. So glad they turned Brock into someone more normal later.... It is super hard to watch Indigo because of that guy.

Also, might shock you but... women in Japan get a lot of that sort of harassment and misogyny... just casually. It can get difficult listening to “average men” of Japan talk. There is a reason men are portrayed a certain way in Shoujo Romance anime....

I'm not usually offended by them, but I don't like them either. I also think there are legitimate reasons for moralizing about some depictions of perversion/paraphilia (even if they're supposed to be comedic). Namely, erosion of social norms. That said, I think there are two scenarios where they're fine.

One, certain comedic contexts. I think as long as you don't cross certain lines (although I'm not certain exactly where these lines should be drawn) it's fine. I'm of the mind that you can joke about anything. However, there are definitely tasteless/destructive ways of doing this that I don't approve of.

Two, mature explorations of of these topics (by mature I mean in a careful and fully-developed manner). I enjoy reading/watching stories with transgressive themes. When a creator provides an honest, tasteful take on these topics, it can be very interesting and maybe even perspective-altering. My Boy is a manga I started reading recently that I think is a good example of this.
I occasionally write blog posts and reviews.

If they sexually assault or touch a girl without her consent=bad
If it is shown that the girl is really uncomfortable or asked them to stop but they continue=bad
They are attracted to minors=bad
I don’t mind pervert characters in fact I really like them it can make a really great and loveable dynamic. I.e Tanaka and Kiyoko💕

I don't find sexual harassment funny. If anything, I find the way in which these characters are written as funny. They can come off kind of simplistic and one-dimensional in their behavior. It's kind of child-like. I don't deny that there are some people out there who's perversion can be dentrimental to others. But most people aren't as exaggerated with it as you see characters in anime.

Usually negative because they just come off as creepy, awkward and weird.

I know that all probably sounds weird coming from me, but I also think a lot of people try too hard with this shit and that pervy anime characters just reflect that really try-hard mentality. The words people use as descriptors can make sexy stuff sound fucking disgusting. The way people act about it can make sexy stuff seem gross and icky. Pervy MCs in stuff like harem anime often feel like they just act as extensions of behaviors I already dislike, since they tend to carry themselves in more or less that exact same way, just more animated. I'd go more into specific examples of types of shit I hate, but I don't want it to sound like I'm just calling other ecchi fans out, since I do actually like this fandom overall.

I think the only harem MC that was from the pervy category that didn't come off like a creepy little shit to me was the dude from Trinity Seven, but even then I remember feeling it just came off more naturally with him. It lacked the animated qualities of DxD's or SnO's MCs and he seemed less like some fucking idiot and more like a normal person with a high libido, which was nice. Otherwise they tend to just be an anchor on the whole series for me.

I've never felt strongly about them outside of the harem MC context since I've never had a dog in that fight, but I don't find them especially funny or likable in any memorable instance. I always thought some of the negative reactions they got seemed overwrought, but in the same vein I've never felt pressed to defend them. I just don't like the archetype much, I guess. It's obnoxious, weird and I don't think it really tends to reflect on ecchi fans very well in a way not totally dissimilar to IPE's entire existence.

Yeah, i like that explanation. If you like it, good to you! I just find it distracting and it brings nothing to the plot. It's not that bad if it's just a side character, but if you make your MC's entire personality just "hehe pervert funny" then it's just lazy writing

For me, it can ruin the character (e.g. Sanji from One Piece)* or a whole show (e.g. 7 Deadly Sins). However, I also think it can add to a character, like NGE's Ryouji Kaji.

Aside from the obvious cases of it being sexual harassment or out-of-place, I think the problem rests in the reason a character is written as perverted or thirsty. Like, is it just an excuse for fanservice, or does it actually deepen the story? Also, it can be made worse if the character is intended as a surrogate for the viewer. It's like the show is trying to force me to vicariously participate in it. And that makes me feel really gross & repulsed (I also dislike a lot of fanservice for this reason). Though sexual stuff, in general, also makes me feel that way (I'm grey ace & sex-averse). Interestingly, my sexuality can sometimes lessen the effect of ecchi, the prime example being in Food Wars where it blends into everything else so much I don't really notice it.

I don't share their opinion. It's a fictional pervert. Japan's attitude towards sex is also different than in the west. I'd even argue its natural for men to be curious about the body of a woman if they've never had the experience.
