This movie does not live up to the hype surrounding it, although it certainly isn’t bad. While the production value was great and the story premise was initially promising, it ended up being somewhat shallow and boring. It may be that Weathering With You is better viewed as social commentary, but even then, I don’t know if it deserves too much leniency for its failures. That being said, I think viewers should keep an open mind when watching this movie.

Despite the initial, slow pacing, the story that unfolds in the opening sequence(s) has promise. Young runaways trying to make their way in Tokyo read more

I found the initial premise for Happiness to be intriguing. It starts out exploring how the humans-turned-vampires cope with their new lives. How they handle this new state (e.g., the thirst for blood), how it affects their relationships with others, and the struggle they face to remain “normal”. I was pleasantly surprised to find an absence of overt revenge or power fantasy elements. While this type of story isn’t anything novel, I liked the dark, gritty take on the “underground” lives of vampires.

Approximately halfway through the story takes a turn for the worse. It starts to branch out into different arcs, some of read more

The concept for Assassin’s Pride had potential, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I didn’t particularly enjoy watching it and just generally thought it was pretty bad. Production value aside (more on that later), the characters are weak and the story is a mess. The only redeeming thing about this show is the occasional cute or funny moment.

I didn't find any of the cast to be interesting or engaging. The main characters in particular are very lacking given their level of prominence. Each one has a specific narrative that defines their character (e.g., Melida the “incompetent talented girl”; this concept read more

I mildly enjoyed Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, although I think people who like these types of shows will rate it higher than I have. While I thought a few of the characters were interesting and fun to watch (namely Kuroko, Mikoto, and Mitsuko), the rest of the cast was fairly shallow and/or boring. I’ll specifically call out Ruiko and Kazari as they are two of the main cast. While I don’t think they necessarily got less development than the other characters they are set up as fairly bland archetypes.

The show is mostly episodic with a few short narrative arcs (typically 3-4 episodes in read more
