THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
As expected, the devil himself Kimichika is relentless when it comes to matches, pretty much an individual vs. team play so much that he earns the ire of the entire Seiin volleyball team. Truly on another level, but the attitude doesn't hold up.

But winding back time a bit, we get Oda's POV before all of the fiasco happened. An inter-class volleyball game, and it's not even a warm-up session for Kimichika and Oda setter duo. But when Yuni enters the picture, things started going down the way it is...and so is predicting both the former's long-lasting weakness, which he still could not overcome since the timeskip without Kimichika on the volleyball team.

Same with Oda, he learns volleyball from Kimichika's perspective, and the motivation to do more and excel better in future tournaments. That's why, you got your answer of how the number 2.43 came about.

Sorry if this is a bit out of place:

Can someone who is able to understand Japanese help me with this? Do the characters have some kind of accent? Does it sounds a bit foreign (Chinese maybe)?

I try to watch it raw, and i notice some speech patterns like slightly prolonged sentence endings - but I am no way experienced enough to tell this is actually a dialect or not.
I notice it a lot for example for this guy at 13:50:

But maybe I am just overthinking this?

I believe they actually do have an accent, yes.

It's an accent that's predominant in the Hokuriku region the high school was in the Fukui Prefecture which is a part of Hokuriku.

Arata Wataya from Chihayafuru has the same accent and mannerisms when speaking.

Ngl, the OP is growing up on me. Still can't justify those blushing scenes. Also, the short guy looks quite promising. This episode was okay IMO. At least, better than the previous one.
That 2.43 reference was pretty clever for the show.

Good episode, emotionally, even though something doesn't make sense, like why Kuroba doesn't apologize to Haijima? Why it look like Haijima is the one at fault when it's Kuroba that didn't show up in second match in middle school tournament? Kuroba is the one who has shitty personality!

And Aoki is loving Oda too much, he kick Haijima when Haijima insult Oda, but Aoki did nothing when Haijima insult the whole volleyball team. This is Aoki's ulterior motive, he loves Oda.

Haijima deserved that kick at the beginning lol. so the name of this anime actually comes from the height of the net huh, smart. Kuroba was pretending to be bad, so he's supposedly improved?
Haijima finallyyyy joins the team.

tbh this anime has pretty incosistent pacing... like they keep time skipping and doing shit right after they introduce a plot point and it feels pretty messy. we learnt the reason for the name of the anime and its pretty interesting i gues. also, wtf is up with the all characters accents in this episode lmao i was laughing so hard.

Everyone graduated with Hajima still hurt. That was sad.

I like the way we see the characters' emotional struggles. It's done better than a lot of other shounen sports series.

This has so much gayness. Not seeing shounen-ai as one of its genres hurts a little. I wish this pulled a "No 6".

I was kind of hoping to see Yuni's thighs again this episode, but their shorts are longer now. lol Hope they get small again.

I love how the guys come in various different body types. As nice as it may be to admire pretty guys, when every guy has the same body type with slightly different heights, hairstyles and hair colour, the story loses a bit of reality.

The "ulterior motive" and him being very defensive makes it seem like Aoki has a crush on the short senpai, but I know it's not true. It's really sad. The actual ulterior motive better be WAY better than a crush!

We're finally in the main story and I'm already loving Oda. He's a realistic representation of short volleyball players. Everything in general is very realistic, and that may be a turn off for many people who expected an anime like Haikyuu. But not me, as I'm a sucker for realism.

Chika has grown on me in this episode. I totally get why he didn't want to join the volleyball club. After what happened in Tokyo, he tried his best to win in middle school, but the one friend whom he trusted the most ditched him in an OFFICIAL match and later talked shit about him behind his back and he didn't even receive an apology. No wonder why he doesn't want to get involved with Kuroba and any volleyball club ever again.
He should've gone to Shiratorizawa.

Also I don't see any BL in this. People need to stop calling everything with pretty dudes in it BL.
If you read Eleceed you're automatically my friend.

Why? Really? This is the same thing as the guys that keep over sexualizing female characters, can’t you just enjoy the characters and the show without sexualizing them or creating romances fanfics.

Well I like that the actual story is finally starting, but I don’t see much to keep me watching it. The high school players aren’t very unique and it is pretty shameless in its yaoi bait. I’ll keep in eye on it in case it improves, but I am dropping it for now.

It’s not like that, everyone should be giving the right to do what they want with the characters my problem is with exposing that, for an example: wanting to see the main characters in tight shorts, does this really need to be shared? If you think so then I’ll admit that I’m wrong

this episode was definitely more enjoyable for me!

we see where 2.43 comes from!

not a fan of Yuni, idk how he switched up on Haijima like that, went from bitching about him to throwing a school game to 'get him back'

the pacing isn't to my liking either

an interesting character for me now is misao! looking forward to his development and what he's all about :)

I'm a BIG volleyball fan... and one of the reasons I got into anime more seriously was thanks to sports anime and haikyuu... I was SOOO HYPED for this anime cause i wanted a more mature and realistic approach to what being an athlete is for us common folk that don't have super human abilities. However, I'm not being able to connect with this anime. The emotional moments seem ungranted and IDK if I'm just being biased because I love Haikyuu so much. But I'm struggling to connect emotionally so much. AND EITHER MAKE IT SHOUNEN AI or stop de effin blushing ahha

Suddenly it's like a completely different anime, because of the timeskip, but somehow it's extremely easy to get into the new scene. Very well done.

Or it might just be because BOYS. Very much so, in so many different aspects. All the repressed memories and emotions, all the passion, all the temper... hah. Great to see. And the way they end up connecting, just like Haikyuu taught us volleyball is about... xD

I liked it a lot, pretty good episode.

I thought Kuroba was actually messing up until he mentioned that he was throwing the game on purpose so Haijima would join.

I also liked that despite what Haijima thought of the volleyball club, after seeing them he realizes that they are pretty serious about getting to the nationals.
The matches are no Haikyuu but they are good enough to be engaging.

Curious to see how this will play out in terms of sports vs drama.

first, do you think animes like shokugeki, kill la kill and Monogatari are just softcore porn as you think that ecchi are only softcore porn.
second, I never said that you can only watch shows that are not appealing I said that there is no need to sexualize characters in episodes discussions that got nothing to do with, you can create a discussion saying that you want the main characters to use tight shorts and I wouldn't have the slightest problem. Also, I'm not pointing my finger at other ecchi's because is the main point of the show but this show is or tries to be a serious one.

Whoa! Time skip! After what happened previously, they still managed to be the same high school. Idk if their prefecture had no other school, but damn! Its a fate, boys, just reunited already! Even that mock tournament had nothing to do to their little fight. Its just meaningless. Unless, its supposed to introduced another main casts. Yeah, they've got another main duos that expectedly can bring these show into a good way. Thats a plus point. Surprise that those yellow guy actually the main casts too. He looked so passive this episode. Guess that scouting hint already targetting him as the new members, like Chika. Which was he may join the team, maybe in the next episode. Thank you very much for the casting distribution mal, its really helped me.

So, in short, another target for Chika, and his new team. Idk what kind of drama in the later episodes awaits them. Could it bring a good, or a bad one? So lets see their interactions there....

Most underrated anime this season, its good from time to time having a casual sport anime like this, focused more on the drama side of the sport (no need to go full hanebado thought, that would suck),i like that its so plain from the chara design to the characters themself, this anime is kind of a breather from all the flashy animes this season,a shame it doesn't get any love.

That was a pretty good episode, do not understand why people are not liking this much.
My only problem so far is with Kuroba's personality - not apologizing or even having a simple talk about what happened at the middle school tournament for almost a year, even though he knew he was wrong and did want to play volleyball with Kimichika again....

Also, opening song is quite catchy, haven't skipped it even once yet.

Yep, it is pretty deep inaka (countryside) dialect, you can clearly hear the accent being off, especially comparing to Kimichika who's speaking 標準語 (good job on getting rid of the dialect for several years in Tokyo btw, kids do learn fast lol).

First two episodes were rushed as hell, full of clichés, bad drama and assholes characters. Glad that I discovered the anime today and watched the three first episodes straight in a row, because if I had been watching the episodes weekly I would probably have dropped the show before episode 3. This episode pretty much saved the day for me. It was quite ok, with one good element that gave me fun watching: the short team captain who is actually a nice guy (the very first one in this anime, yay!) filled with bright and positive passion about volleyball and not dark issues or toxic mentality or whatever. I think I'll stick to this anime a little longer to see where it could be going.
