How much Japanese in anime can you understand if there were no subtitles? For me, I think I need to know the context first before I am able to understand a decent amount of the Japanese being spoken, which usually means watching the episode at least once with subtitles, and then later without necessarily remembering the subtitles. What about you?

Same as yours, I'd probably cry my eyes out if there were no subs in a psych anime.

I watched some raw clips of Yugioh on yt 4 example and it's pretty understandable because they keep repeating game terms and for me you don't need subs for that

I kinda get the gist of the scenes by picking up words/phrases along with the actions, but understanding entire dialogue per second is way beyond my knowledge right now lol

if i were to look away from the screen for a second I can understand some phrases that are constantly repeated in anime, or sentences that have words im familiar with from constantly hearing it.
so in the end... not that much at all to watch it without subs

probably the same you. need the context to fully grasp what is being said, though I think my Japanese is not that bad right now because I have relatives who live in japan for their uni and i've asked a lot of questions regarding Japanese grammar because its so hard

Ohayo-good morning
I may know more but these are the words I remember on the top of my head.

Maybe a dozen words. Most of the times I already have my hands full with following the english subtitle (which is not my native language), I don't have the capacity to concentrate on the japanese too.

If I know the situation the characters are in (or context), I'd probably understand about 30% of what they're saying

If i know what the context they are talking, i can understand up to 50%. Because those conversation words are pretty often used and i'm pretty familiar.

Depends on the genre. Some Onii-chan incest flick is easier to parse than Setsubo Sensei grade wit. Lest we forget a number of "good" anime are meant to be linguistically smart and challenging to even native speakers.

I find that the honorific and politeness endings (-san, -masu) help me to understand the tone of the speech and social relation of the speakers. As intended by the design of Japanese.

But I'm completely lost for anything but the most idiomatic and stereotypical layer of vocabulary.

I'm at the point where I understand the Japanese word jokes better than the English ones. But I'll admit I would not be able to grasp something like Monogatari without subs.

i can understand basic phases but more specific words are harder to understand.

especially when they are talking quickly.

A tiny bit. Out of what they are saying maybe a 2-3%.

When it comes to Hentai it's way easier to understand.

if you wanna learn japanese, try rewatching scenes from shows you have already seen but search what they are saying in jisho.org or something. might take a lot of replaying but you can learn a lot. thats what I did for a couple years, worked well just took a lot of time.

also helps if you have a little bit of base in the language from a textbook or something tho.

Enough to multitask. Though I usually get lost when they start using made up jargon and whatnot, especially if the show is made up of a crap ton of it like Mahouka.

I've been learning Japanese by myself, so, excluding the typical words any "otaku" knows like arigato, oniisan, oneesan, sumimasen, baka... I know some basic words, I can understand some words but not the complete sentence if it's more advanced vocabulary. Also, I can read the hiragana and katanaka system, and I can read some kanjis. Listening, I can understand a little words more than reading because memorizing kanjis is difficult.

I can pick out a few common words/phrases, such as "etou..." or "dakedo". So basically what @LJ2002 might term "otaku" vocabulary, except not even all of it, because I already forgot what "sumimasen" means.

Depends on the genre, my Japanese language skill is around JLPT N3. According to my experience, this should be it.

Slice of Life/Drama - At least 80~90%
Fantasy/Action/Shounen - At least 60~70%
Mystery/Police - At least 40~50%

and...
Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei - Probably 10~20%

not enough. I hear the words. I know about 70% what they mean but I can't piece the lines together.
I can't tell the difference between:
this is my chair
I sit on this chair
I made this chair

ok, maybe I can with this one example. but this is where my skills fail.
