I commented about this on a thread down below, but thought this'd make a good topic and I'd like to see if anyone can relate. I usually don't end up re-watching a lot of stuff, but recently I decided to try and re-watch Re:Zero so I could catch up with season 2. It's been around 3 years since I watched the first season. It definitely wasn't as good as I remember. It's watchable, but I wouldn't give it a 10 like I originally did. Maybe nostalgia played a part in it originally. Or maybe it's just because I vaguely remember what happens and nothing will compare to the first watch. Either way, it's really unfortunate and it actually makes me feel guilty that I didn't enjoy it as much. But, tastes can change over time. I dropped it after episode 13. For me, I guess the initial appeal of Isekai was the excitement of the main protagonist being transported to another world. It was fresh, until you've seen it more than a handful of times. Then, it's up to a series to be enjoyable beyond that if that makes sense? So, has anybody else had a similar experience? Highly regarded a series/movie originally, and upon re-watching it, been disappointed? |

Tastes change especially after a long amount of time. Only show that I loved even more after rewatching is Psycho Pass S1. Good shows are good even after rewatch. But bad shows will stick out. |

I used to rewatch a lot of anime and I've only had that problem once. I always felt the same level of enjoyment as the first watch (With the exception of those exciting feelings that comes from that first experience of seeing a great moment or special reveal of something). The only anime that wasn't as good as the first watch, was Gantz. I originally gave it a 7 but when I rewatched it, I changed it to a 1. |

Personally I can't rewatch most series. It's just not exciting for me because I already know what's going to happen. I can and do re-watch certain episodes from episodic animes I've seen but I can't re-watch an anime from start to finish. |

It was the opposite for me. I rewatched Re:Zero before the 2nd Season aired since it's been 4 years and it made me remember why I fell in love with the show. I'm currently only watching 1-3 episodes a day cuz I'm slowly losing interest in anime but when I rewatched ReZero, I was watching 5 or 6 episodes a day. Man, rewatching the show rekindled my love for anime. I've actually been rewatching a lot of anime lately since I've lost interest in about 95% of the anime on my PTW list and no anime out there (aside from seasonals) catches my interest anymore. |

I always rewatch a show if I decide to invest in the source material. So my enjoyment of a show either increases because I understand more of what's going on, and that I can compare how well it's adapted, or it can decrease if the adaptation was unfaithful to the source material. I think people have already mentioned it here, but obviously one's taste in anime does change over time. So it's interesting to see how my tastes and enjoyment of series have changed since I first watched them. |

The second experience will allways be worse than the first.Because since you will know what will happen you dont look as much forward to the plot and start noticing the flaws. The only expection to this are shows like Eva and mono where there are some things you can only notice on the second viewing. |

I did at one point try to watch Voltron starting from its original episodes, since I'd only seen The New Adventures of Voltron as a kid, and I was really into it. I got bored after several episodes, heh. This isn't technically a rewatch, but is close enough I guess. |

Rewatching is a funny thing but for me it goes several ways. Sometimes, I like the season less: CCS Clear Card (10 -> 9), Fruits Basket 2019 (10 -> 9) Sometimes equally: Hyouka (9), Emiya Gohan (9), Non Non Biyori (8) Sometimes more: Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (7 -> 8), K-On! (6 -> 7) The thing I've learnt to avoid is to not watch a show you love with someone else because if they don't like it and pick at it, it kinda ruins it for you. |

I'm scared to rewatch some of the shows I saw back in high school or college for precisely this reason. Most of the ones I've done it with like Black Lagoon or Soul Eater do still hold up, but occasionally there's one like Jormungand that takes a bit of a dip now I'm older and can analyse better. I've actually got a short list of shows I'm intending to rewatch soon; 3-gatsu no Lion, Genshiken, Spice and Wolf and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. It's been at least 3 years since I saw any of them, and I'd like to see how they hold up now. |

I'm the opposite. Whenever I rewatch an anime I like it even more than when I first watched it. Fate Zero I gave a six when I first completed it. Was a brain dead generic shounen fan back then, but when I rewatched it like 6 months ago I gave it a 10. |

Yes because if I rewatch Violet Evergarden I will give it a 3-4/10 instead of a 6/10. I have rewatched One Piece thrice, and reread it twice, totaling in four watches and three reads. Therefor, I couldn't stomach another rewatch or reread, at least for a couple more years. It's still my (second) favorite, and I remember every single episode by number and what happens in them. @amare135 clarify. Are you saying that anime be an extension and reflection of your age and sex? Or, would you be saying that what you enjoyed prior were an extension and reflection of your younger age. |

Time and experience changed things.I remember rating Death Note(my first anime) as it was the best thing I had seen until then but as I rewatched it,I thought it is good but certainly there are better anime and changed it to 9.Tbh I rewatch the anime I enjoy the most and are full of hype,Aot,Bnha,FMAB |

yeah, I gave re zero a 9 but after a couple years the more I think back after watching a million other anime I really think it wasn't the greatest. I left it as 9 out of respect because it was one of the shows that got me really into anime. season 2 hasn't really had me trapped, still good tho imo. |

It's completely normal, although I'm more on the opposite side. For example, I rewatched Wolf's Rain and Shingeki no Kyojin S1, two series that when I watched the first time I didn't care about, but the second time around I loved them. I recently re-watched FMAB after 9 years that I watched it for the first time, and even if I still find it an amazing show, I wasn't as excited with it like back then. I found many flaws that I overlooked the first time. This is not happening to me with my HxH rewatch so far, and I'm just as hyped as when I watched it back in 2014... so yeah... it depends. Also: I'm rewatching Gintama with my best friend and I'm appreciating it WAY more than my first watch. And it's my favorite anime next to JoJo, so it's saying something. Sometimes rewatches make you fall even more in love with a show. |

Honestly can't say I have really. I was concerned this would happen when I rewatched A Place Further Than the Universe, but when I did rewatch it I just remembered why I love it so much and that even without being where I was in life, it still holds up. I rewatched March Comes in Like a Lion twice, once with a friend and once alone, and both times I loved it just as much if not more. I'll probably run across a time where that isn't true someday, but since I tend to find rewawtching easier than watching in many cases, I suspect that for me, more often than not I'll love it more |

Yup, taste can change in any moment. That's why I don't rewatch any "personal favorite" anime for a 2nd time if it has passed more than 5+ months. As for a 3rd rewatch, it doesn't really matter no matter how much time passes though, it's more likely that I'm doing it to put that particular show under scrutiny and less for entertainment value. |

I'm actually rather the opposite. Around four years into my foray into anime, I'm finding more and more that I actually always prefer rewatching my favorites to new series (or just individual episodes or scenes/moments from my favorites) and even the series which are far from my favorites, I enjoy rewatching and reflecting back on in hindsight more than I do the first watch. I often don't find the first watch as rewarding as subsequent watches because in the back of my mind I have this niggling worry that it's going to disappoint somehow and undercut itself and therefore prove to be something which leaves me feeling unfulfilled and taken advantage of by its end. Once I've seen it through in full and know that isn't the case, I can actually put my mind at ease and enjoy it in a more relaxed manner on any second viewing - as well as often more in-depth and picking up on more and more details and nuances. The first watch is more like a trial run and can be sensory overload from not knowing what to expect, but revisiting great anime feels even more rewarding and supremely comfortable. I'm not the type of person whose taste undergoes such radical change - once I love something I effectively love it for life or at least, always have up to now. I never put something on that I once derived any sense of enjoyment, wonder, or pleasure from and am disappointed by it. Even cartoons I watched when I was 5 years-old. I see it as if they had something of value and worth to communicate to me once, then that is something which cannot be lost or erased. But I'm also not the sort of person who views myself as a different person every few years from the last with no sense of inheritance or continuity. I feel like essentially the same person in many respects as the 2 1/2 year-old toddler who first started forming enduring conscious memories. I'm content to keep that chain of continuity and integral sense of self with me all the while even if I reach 120. |

So far I've been lucky enough to not experience that. Over the years (mainly before MAL) I rewatched several series and got the same amount of entertainment out of them. It all comes down to what you're getting out of it. If you're looking for a relatable story that is close to RL then most rewatches won't do it. We all age, move on to different phases in life, and most of our anime favorites will become irrelevant over time. If you're there for the characters or the atmosphere there's a much higher chance you'll enjoy a rewatch. It may even feel nostalgic if you haven't seen it for a while cause it's like seeing an old friend again. I watched the Made in Abyss compilation movies earlier in the year and felt the same amount of gratefulness and sense of wonder that I had when I first watched the series back when it aired. Some series hold up really well, while others fall flat on their face. |

For me, that's usually not the case. But a problem I've faced while rewatching is already knowing what's going to happen and if it's a tragic event then I'm pretty much grieving and bawling my eyes out even before the OP plays for that episode. |

I realized it's not very fun to re-watch your series, especially the ones you love the most. I used to make a big deal about re-watching my 10's annually around the same time each year, but they kept on getting less and less enjoyable because I could remember all of the best parts and they always felt a bit less exciting every time. I don't know why I thought it would be like watching it for the first time again. I also get what you mean when you said you felt guilty that you didn't enjoy it as much. I felt kinda bad because I thought that everything was going to be less good than I remembered; the last thing that I wanted to do was to ruin the good memories I had of liking stuff the first time around. I do still re-watch stuff but I have stricter rules about it now. I'm hoping to extend the wait time between re-watches enough so that I can almost replicate what it's like to watch it for the first time. It sounds stupid when I say it like that; I'm basically hoping to wait long enough to maybe forget about most of the plot details (which I know is probably unlikely). And I'm also making it so that the more I like something the longer I have to wait to watch it again. |

Animes where having the context and knowledge of later events make it even better are great for a rewatch. An anime like monogatari is so good the second time around when you understand the characters more and if the first watch was in aired order vs the second being in chronological. Being able to identify foreshadowing and why events play out the way they do makes heavy dialogue shows that much more enjoyable, you really realize the genius of the creator. |

The only stuff I've changed my mind about Re:Zero was that I acknowledge Subaru mistakes in the 2nd arc (for some reason, in my first watch I thought Subaru actions were justified, even with the own show telling it was not) and I realized the action episodes that finishes the arc were unnecessary, considering the show is mostly about Subaru's sanity (usually the arc about his sanity ends right before the action episodes). But I still think it's a solid 8/10, and safely my favorite "serious" isekai. A show that I really changed my mind about it later was Psycho Pass 2. I didn't noticed in my first watch how much inconsistency this show has and how Mika's character was executed so poorly. |

Unfortunately effects no go back rewatch, experience things multiple times. There are lots of losers on this site that watching somthing once and give it a 10 and never watch it again. If you watch somthing a second time and say hey this sucked or hey I didn’t see that or now I get what this character means. You gain info that you didn’t the last time you watch. I’ve rewatched my favorite anime 1 billion times why becuase I love to experience things multiple times! |

Come to think of it now, it’s the first Anime I didn’t like as much upon rewatching. I don’t know, at the end of the day, it is what it is. Sometimes my enjoyment of an Anime depends on how my life circumstances are at that point in time. This year, due to obvious reasons, hasn’t been too great for some of us. :( |

Usually first time I watch the sub and in the rewatch I switch to the dub. It is like watching a new series. I am careful to series I pick, so chances for a worse rewatching experience are slim. However I was pleasantly surprised with Elfen Lied. Back in mid-2000 I had rated it very low and thought I would not handle it again. I also had read the manga and knew the story. However the BD version and the boost in visual and audio quality made it a much better experience, even with the hilarious English dub. I'd gladly rewatch it again. |

It happens, for me most of my favorites that I rewatch turn out still being fantastic or even better than that (even after multiple rewatches for specific shows), but there is the occasional show I lost completely after rewatching it. The biggest one for me being Code Geass Season 2. 1 great ending aside, that season was an absolute joke of an anime, and even ruined all the characters for me, including Lelouch. The only thing I enjoyed about that season 2 other than the ending, was the pizza and sides I ordered from Pizza Hut, to watch with Code Geass. |

Well, re-watching made me realize that Bunny Girl Senpai was as overrated and subpar as my inner self was trying to tell me the first time around xD. On the other hand, rewatching Oregairu actually improved my views of it by a lot. I don’t really list rewatches often, and I don’t commonly do rewatches in particular, anyways. |

I rewatched some shows recently. Talking about my favorites, when I rewatched Dorohedoro, the CGI was kinda strange for me. But it was just on the first episode, I enjoyed the anime like I did at the first time. About Digimon, I had good memories from childhood. I watched again to make some comparisons with Digimon Adventure:, airing this year. And what can I say, I loved the show more than I could imagine. It's a near perfect anime for me. And Mob Psycho 100 and TTGL, I can rewatch anytime, too. When you rewatch something you already know what's gonna happen. The impact or surprise of a scene will not feel like the first time, so the experience can be ruined a bit. In other situation, you'll rewatch an anime and notice things you didn't at the first time, and will like it more and more. |

I've rewatched Steins;gate over 20 times, and to be honest, it never gets old. The more I watch it, the more the nostalgia hits me, and the scenes that I thought were unimportant plot from when I first watched it, become to be a lot more meaningful to me. And rewatching the bicker of makise and okabe will never get old But i do remember rewatching Akira. At first I gave it a 10, then when I rewatched it I dropped it down to a 6. Not sure why I rated it so high the first time, but Im guessing that was just me thinking anything gorey and violent was thought provoking.. |

Yes, I have watched One Piece about 3-4 times over from at least the first 516 episodes, but I had fortunate effects. I only began to love the anime more, and found some veiled subtext, allegories and themes that I hadn't even grasped in the first place. Unfortunate? Most definitely Sonic X. I went from loving it as a kid, to it being awful. |
