Damn wretched forum. To elaborate my answer as per instructed rules of word limits, I'd say no. I don't demand much from my country, and I do offer return by intellect-related occupations. It'd be a waste of time, for me at least, to join the military.

My parents, grandparents, uncle, etc. were in the military, but it never interested me. I only support war when it is in actual self-defense (like another country trying to invade yours)...not the illegal wars of aggression the United States (the only country I have lived in) military seems to like.

No, I am not interested in aiding America's military industrial complex. Even in non combat roles it's still supporting the establishment. No more foreign coups and no more wars for monopolizing natural resources and capitalist market dominance.

I was an Interior Communications Electrician (IC) and was stationed on the Nimitz. I was separated for depression, but it would have been the end of my contract if the recruiters hadn't lied and tricked me into signing a two-year extension to my contract. I didn't know I was technically a six-year enlistee (normally would have been four) until I had been in for 5+ months. Embarrassing, to say the least. I wouldn't go back if I was elligible. Not only am I not okay with having to do push-ups to keep my job (I'm wimpy and couldn't build arm muscle to save my life), my division had major issues with bullying, which I was on the receiving end of, hence the depression. The job itself was fine, and I didn't mind deployment, but I didn't really have any friends for most of it. At the very end of my enlistment I did make a friend, and I met my boyfriend as well (still together 5.5 years later), but most of it was completely miserable for me. I would still recommend it for people who want to make decent pay with no degree (though doing the same job in the real world pays way better, but you will need some level of school). It's a great way to travel, as well as save money since you don't have to pay things like rent and utilities unless you go out of your way for a home. If you're willing to suck it up for four years and do a shit job, you can come out with a lot of money, as well as access to free college. There are also tons of benefits for military members, like free admission to stuff. There's lots of ways to entertain yourself without spending money. My experience wasn't good because I was with people I couldn't get along with, but plenty of people have good experiences. It's best for people with thick skin, which I lack. For those who are concerned about killing, in the US Navy, most of the jobs are not related to killing. Yes, you are still supporting the military which does kill, but the Navy jobs are primarily about maintaining the ship. You can get on-the-job trade experience and potentially turn it into a career after you get out. Feel free to ask questions if you want. |

I signed up for the army as soon as I finished school, either mechanic or something in that field that would let me go abroad but not on the front lines. Thought I would get it straight away since they said they were after literally anyone because of massive lack in manpower. Got declined because I had been prescribed with an inhaler because I was struggling with my breathing a few years before during pollen season and they THOUGHT it MIGHT be asthma related. Bearing in mind that at the time as was into athletics, track running and generally fitter than pretty much anyone else in my years at school. "In almost all cases, if you currently have asthma you will not be able to join the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard. If you have or were diagnosed with Asthma past the age of 13, you may still be able to enlist with a waiver. Before you officially enlist in any of the military branches, you will undergo what is known as a Pulmonary Function Test, or PFT. This test will determine the extent of your asthma, and whether not it’s a disqualifying condition."

I don't think so. At least not in this point of time. In Norway there's conscription, so you're actually required to join the army when you're 18, and I was no different. I was deemed qualified by all the tests, but later I got "dismissed" because I had a history of smoking hashish. In the end I'm happy I didn't have to spend any more time there, so I consider it a blessing; I was supposed to be a royal guard, and I don't think I'd like it.
