This episode was a great one. It shows how an army, no matter that they haven't lost in the past can be defeated. The duel between Thorkell and Thorfinn was interesting, as no matter how beat Thorfinn gets he doesn't lose his will to fight.

I think this is the first time that someone has called Thorfinn a warrior. I hope we see more of Thorkell.

Enjoyed this episode, but I still can't get over Thorfinn. He hasn't developed in the slightest since his father was killed (or, if we're being lenient, after Thorfinn's first kill), nor is there any depth to Thorfinn's character. He wants revenge for his father. He'll kill anyone that stands against his clan so that he can appease and subsequently duel Askelad (because Thorfinn retained some of the honor his father taught him). Every scene of Thorfinn is of him either brooding or fighting, there's no other dimensions to his character.

I did, however, see someone else mention that he grows out of it and actually develops -- I'm very much looking forward to that as his character right now is very two dimensional.

He does grow out of it and develop but not tell the second arc of the manga which the anime hasn't adapted. He will get no growth in S1 but that was intentional by the mangaka. Its Askeladd ,Thorkell and Caunte that really carry this arc/season( especially Askeladd).

Yeah, I've gotten a bit farther into the show and can confirm. Anyone who is reading this and was like me: don't worry, the rest of the characters more than make up for Thorfinn's lackluster development.

Also, and this is completely unrelated, but Lawren222, you and I have near identical ratings for all of the anime we've seen, give or take a point here and there. T'was pretty surprised by that haha

Thats the thing about life.. Some find burning the world and being in war as a means of fun.. Human nature and desire vary's among men. Which is why we can't coexist not now.. not ever. The idealist is simply just a dreamer.

And here comes Thorkell and the even more exaggerated battles.

2/5 As "bad" as the original chapters.

Really liked Thorkell's personality. Did not like how the show made him so cartoonish.

Thorfinn needs to wisen up. If he keeps getting played for the fool by Askeladd I'm going to start disliking him. And then my rating for the show would subsequently drop as well.

Very curious about this Canute. Feel like he's going to surprise us with his cleverness. (That or he dies immediately? Lol)

Episode was ok overall. Average.

Thorkell really is one madman, switching sides because the enemies seemed to weak. Good to see at the end that Thorfinn doesn't find any joy in battle and he only does this for revenge...

This one's going to be one heck of a battle for Thorfinn look at Thorkell's massive form

Thorfinn would have killed Thorkell but he was outclassed, Damn he suffered a lot back there

Thorfinn needs to step up his game if he wants to defeat this guy a big effort at least.

Thorkell the tall? I feel that's a little understatement for how giant of a man this beast is! DAMN!!! I can sense it when Thorfinn thought that 1 solid punch from this monster can kill him. His punches must've felt like a fucking truck. For such a man to side with the losing side, it really evens out the odds. The madman is a one-man army FFS. His brute strength alone and seemingly immense pain tolerance is way too much for Thorfinn to handle. Nevertheless, their fight was fantastic, so is the animation during it.

Now... If only Thorfinn knew that Thorkell used to be his father's comrade...

If I've kept up with character relations correctly Thorkell is Thorfinn's great-uncle from his mother's side. Kinda wish that had been revealed, but at least the big guy seems to have realized it (or strongly suspects). Looking forward to the next time these two meet.

One episode is enough already for me to like Thorkell's character, he is such a madlad but have some funny side. I thought he could be killed by Thorfinn on this episode by getting his head slashed, but glad it didn't happened.

It hurts my stomach a little when Thorkell showed his bleeding hand in front of the "camera".

Still don't get it why this show considered as seinen. I find the story and fights are really shounen-ish.

Thorkell was badass as well. Seems like Thorfinn is still weak when it comes to stronger opponents like Thorkell. He barely managed to flee from there. He's questioning himself at this point.

The Thorfinn vs Thorkell fight here has the best animation and direction for a fight I would say in this series so far by a long shot. Arifumi Imai definitely worked his magic here, the whole fight was really quick and exaggerated (fittingly given Thorkell's whole presence, character and nature of strength) yet extremely dynamic and free-flowing, nothing sticking out oddly and making every frame and movement count in that very short sequence. Rest of the episode was fine, Thorfinn's character felt somewhat stagnant here but at least he lived to fight another day and found another monster he couldn't defeat yet. He's bound to develop in spades later on but for the time being, he did feel somewhat redundant in this episode. Thorkell definitely is a personality to say the least, not my favorite character of all time by any means but he did bring a freshness here that most Vinland Saga characters have really lacked besides Askeladd so far. Man just wants to fight strong people and have fun, it's goofy but it's nice to see a 2nd person in this series have an ounce of charisma to them.

Thorkell is a fucking savage beast, goddamn. He didn't give a fuck about his fingers being cut off. He doesn't care about winning or losing he just wants a good fight lmao I love this guy. Thorkell did not disappoint.

God the writing for Thorfinn, and Akseladd is getting worse. I don't understand the chemistry between them. I really don't care about his ambition ever since.

We are starting to see a shift in Thorfinn's mindset. He used to be so excited about war and combat. Now he is wondering why did/does anyone find joy in war. The fight between him and Thorkell fight like David vs Goliath. He really is a madman though bro switched sides because he was winning too much🤣🤣.

If Bjorn is in it for the killing, I'd be in it for the r*ping!
During the OP, I thought Cnut's character was a Valkyrie. He looked like a girl. Haha!
Old age? Sweyn should only be about 49-50 by 1013. I guess constantly being at war and at sea can cause faster aging. Haha!
I remember Thorkell now. He's that guy with Thorfinn's dad back in episode one. Damn, Thorfinn hasn't won against a secondary character yet.

I really liked this episode. From the sick fight between Thorfinn and Thorkell to all the "behind the scenes" plans of the king. Really shows how insignificant Thorfinn is in this whole thing, but he will still do whatever it takes to get revenge for his father

A lot of history here. Thorkal the tall. He just enjoys killing. Powerful people will be watching this battle. his only desire is to defeat his enemy with honor. his head doesn’t come cheap. The king of England has left the island. The current carries you in the wrong direction. He is not interested in money. He is interested in an interesting fight. Isn’t it boring fighting battles you always win. It will be 100 years before he takes London bridge! They retreat in the middle of his battle. He takes two fingers. He lives today. Eyes on their axes. A challenge is good medicine for him. They wonder if they won. He locates his shoulder. He marches through the pain. 4

@Artromex Exactly. Poor Thorfinn got beaten up badly and even injured.

"What's so enjoyable about going into battle?" - Thorfinn

I also still don't get the chemistry between Thorfinn and Askeladd, though I do understand the motive being revenge. It will indeed be interesting what the next plan of action will be.

Also, Thorkell was quite the enemy for Thorfinn. Guy lost his 2 fingers, is losing blood from the injury he sustained, and still wasn't satisfied with his fight.
