Using the terms "Best Girl" and "Waifu" for male characters

I personally call male characters that appeal to me my "Waifus" at the forums but more in an ironical and humorous way (and because I think that "Husbando" is an incredibly stupid word). I also call myself "Fujoshi" even though I'm a guy. But there were some people who tried to teach me that I am stupid for doing that. Mostly obvious conservatives. So for some people it's basically not allowed to have your fun while using gender-specific terms for a gender they usually not apply to. I think it's the usual lefty-paranoia of some conservatives (because in their world-view only they are allowed to have fun I assume). But how do you see that? How are your thoughts on that matter?

Well, they are just people that take things too seriously or too literally lol.
I mean, even if you use the term waifu for your fav male character, people should know that it means as it is (fav character) or that it's just a joke.

Anyway, I think husbando is a stupid term too but I think it's better to use it because it can deliver the meaning I want to tell to people (that the character is my absolute favorite) without much of a fuss, lol.

What's wrong with the word husbando ? the word "husband" ? well waifu is from the word "wife" so it's the same thing, just with "ai" instead of "i"...
It's also quite stupid in fact, what's with this word discrimination
But well, if your husband like being call "wife" then why not

Well 2D drawn characters just portray a certain gender that exists in reality. They aren't really that gender. So basically one could call them anything one wants. I think "Best Girl" sounds funny and it's one of the most well-known terms in the Anime-Community.

It's unnecessary gendering. Since 2D drawn anime characters just portray a gender and aren't that gender in reality, you can basically call them anything you want. I like to call them Waifu.

Well then you have no problem to call the girls husbando as well I guess ? since you don't care about it.
Or it is one sided because you don't like the word husbando and that's it ?

I don't really care but I find it it funny that you're implying that only 'Husbando' sounds incredibly stupid. Waifu is and sounds just as stupid and discriminating between the two as if they weren't exactly the same kind of stupid just in different (but equally stupid) disguises is even more stupid if you ask me, but well, if it makes you happy then by all means keep pretending that what you're doing is less stupid and more 'funny' than what everyone else is doing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

I'm still just gonna talk about favorite characters rather than trying to claim ownership or marriage for any character I like, so you do you.

I'm still processing the fact that this needed a thread btw...
I probably regret this post by now.

Why would I call girls "Husbando"? That wouldn't have that ironic flair. I think "Best Girl" and "Waifu" as a word coinage can be used for all kinds of characters. It just has something confusing for people who perceive something as "male" and hear how someone calls it what they perceive as "female".
By many "male" characters you even can't tell what "gender" they portray.

@Pullman I don't claim ownership for any character. I just use these terms ironically. "Husbando" is a stupid term because it's unnecessary gendering without irony behind it. I'm not implying that I'm funnier than everyone else. But I'm definitely funnier than the conservatives who don't get the joke and think making gay jokes is still the most funniest shit in 2020.

Well, personally I just dislike this irony and sarcasm culture on the internet on a general level and tend to not see people who 'ironically' do something as much different from the people who do it seriously. To a neutral observer it's often indistinguishable anyway, and it often feels like a simple defense mechanism to just do everything 'ironically' so people can't make fun of them but in reality they are kinda genuinely into it and just put up irony or sarcasm as a shield to not get judged. But well, that's getting too off topic and pseudo-philosphical.

I'll just say that I wish there was less of this forced irony and sarcasm on the internet and more people just being genuine and saying what they mean and how they feel about things in more honest and straight-forward ways. That's why I'm not a fan of 'waifu/husbando' and other trends full of people who participate 'ironically' in them. But that's just me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And yes, of course conservatives are even less funny. They don't have a sense of humour I don't care for, they simply don't have a sense of humour at all :>.
I probably regret this post by now.

Female = Waifu
Male = Husbando

Well since people are starting to believe boy can be girl, girl can be boy, boy can not be girl nor boy nor boy can not be girl nor boy who tf cares anymore.

Personally I do find the “X boy is best girl” funny, especially if they’re just super manly characters like Thorkell.

I simply dislike gender obsession in all possible walks of life, even when it's unnecessary. Why can't a 2D animated portrayal of a boy (who isn't even a real boy) be called girl or wife? Also I love the word "Waifu". It simply sounds more passionate than "husbando".
I have nothing against conservatives in general. I just like to mock people of all kinds for fun. I also hate the "left" and "right" Obsession. It's dehumanizing, really.

I kinda get what you mean, the word "waifu" has a higher vowel ratio than the word "husbando", which makes the former sound better to the ears. As well, the "s" and "d" sound makes it so more force is needed to enunciate them, which doesn't sound as pleasant to me. When learning English, my first few years I had difficulties in pronunciation due to the fact that there's just so much more mouth movement needed compared to my native language.

Dunno fam. It depends. I would consider Son Hak (Akatsuki no Yona) as a Husbando (I see nothing wrong with this term) and Ayasaki Hayate (Hayate no Gotoku) as a waifu. Likewise Katou Megumi (Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata) as a Waifu and Senjougahara Hitagi (Monogatari series) as a Husbando. :P

Not conservative (obviously). Still think you shouldn't call them waifus.

Reason being that "my waifu" stems from Azumanga Daioh. A legendary scene from a legendary anime. It refers to the teacher's wife, which is way too good for an unashamed pedophile like him.

Out of respect for that, I would simply keep using the term as originally intended. But let's be honest, in the end... no one really cares.

Onodera is my waifu. Ryuuji Takasu is my quasi-husbando. Why? Because the former has a vajayjay and the latter has a dong. Both are stupid terms and should always be used ironically otherwise you wouldn`t be taken seriously.

Male character as a waifu. That's a weird thing but not for traps.

I usually avoid traps but one time I fell it was when I watched 'Ignite' opening of SAO II without watching the anime. I thought the girl in black was so cool fighting with a light saber like a Jedi. Lol

Think of the disappointment when she turned to be none other than Kirito. 🤦
So guess he is the only male waifu for me. 😂
